I want to wake up dead. But I want that to happen a long time from NOW! I spent the same night in the cab of a Toyota Taco - ran heater for 10 minutes every 20 min or so - real REM type sleep experience - I was lucky enuf to have a blanket -Thanks Jo and Sean! Do not sleep with a fuel comsuming heater operating in the area UNLESS you are a FIREMAN! Wasn't the wind blowing exhaust up yer skirt that evening? something about that CO alarm going off once??? Busted!!!!!!!! I prefer my beautiful wife and a really warm sleeping bag to any heater made. Take Care, Be Careful, Have Fun GO "I plan on living Forever. So far so good!" We use a Zodi Hotvent Tent Heater on Dauntless. The propane heater remains outside the cabin and the cabin air is recirculated through a heat exchanger without ever mixing with the exhaust gas from the combustion chamber. I made a special weatherboard that has 2 3" ports in it. One port has an aluminized 3" hose that goes to one side of the exchanger and the other is the return. The unit uses a 3" 12v blower fan to circulate the air. Works really well down to about 35 or 40 degrees, at which time the propane bottle starts to loose too much pressure due to the outside temp and the efficiency of the burner really suffers. We did spend a 20 degree night on the boat last year at a race in Phoenix (remember that Gary?). The heater was only able to get the cabin up to the low 50's and devoured a bottle of propane every two hours. But that low of a temp is very unusual for us. Anytime it has been in the 45-50 range the heater worked great. It sits on the floor of the cockpit. We always use a CO monitor inside the entire time the heater is running just in case there ever was a leak. Since no combustion is occurring in the cabin, moisture condensation (water vapor is a by product burning propane) and Oxygen depletion are not a problem. And of course....as per the instructions that come with the heater...the lawyers say that you should never use it in the manor that we do with everyone sleeping.......So ........Don't ever use a Zodi heater in the manor that I just described unless you want to wake up dead! Woohoo! 'Jo and I are just as anxious for you two characters to arrive here in Havasu. I just hope the wind gods are in a good mood! But, even if they are not, we're gonna have a great time anchored out under the stars (hopefully) shooting the bull on the beach around a campfire. 6 boats coming so far. Anyone else want to join us???? All we are doing is going out on the 20/21st of October for a little sailing during the day/little BSing during the evening away form the crowds. Come on over! By the way.....are you gonna enlighten the folks as to who you were sailing in the company of during the events described in your post?.....I think most folks would be as jealous as myself !!! Kudos to you for not blowing your own horn! Robbin, If you want to upload your pics for free, The web-site host I use "Piczo.com". It is free and pretty easy to use. I have almost 1500 pics with them online and it has never cost a dime. The number of pics you can store is based on the amount of hits your site gets. I think you start out with 250. They do put an advertising banner at the top of the page but so far, nothing objectionable has ever appeared there so it doesn't bother me a bit. I think it's a bargain for what I pay.....Nothing!!!! I am looking forward to sailing my M-17 at Sean and Jo's Lake 4 weeks from now!!!!! I can hardly contain myself - charging the battery, checking my lifejacket (where is that whistle)? Repaired my whisker pole - Gotta put a new rivet or screw into the gooseneck casting on the boom, spray my new tapered battens with SailCote, put a new overhead light in the cabin (I think the fluorescent died), Grind the sharp edges off of the Port handrail!!! I have to elaborate here - like I need an excuse to blab - I was fortunate enuf to have an old friend sail with me in January - I was rushed to get the boat ready for the Regatta and didn't "tie-up all ends properly" I left some things 1/2 ast. My port handrail - was not screwed/bolted at the forward end - no biggie me thinks- crew is notified of the deficiency (brand new one that had been steel wooled 9 times with Tung oil to furniture grade finish) You know where this is going - My Guest crew is doing a GREAT job of tacking the 155 in a bit of an increasing breeze and my way cool 3/16" ultra low stretch genoa sheets (crew Hated them) get stuck under the loop of what!?!? WAIT DON"T--------------BANG! Crew says "WHAT was that?" I say - "Don't look that direction - I hope no one was hurt!" - exactly 1/2 of my new 4 loop handrail is FLYING across the fleet (no sailors or boats were injured in the making of this 'story') A little while later Skipper (Still Stupid Owner; we switched roles the next day) is pretty screwed up on course direction to next mark, we decide in a democratic way, we need the whisker pole up - cool - gotta brand new one ----- see any similarity here? Pole up and out, sheet in OOOOPS! Now the boat has some "mistakenly" added lower shrouds (long story - they will be removed) "Improper Restoration Parts" or something like that is what Crew is mumbling again. Pole gets wrapped around forward lower and looks like a 10 foot long letter "L" - darn. Pole down - speed down. It has been repaired to the PERFECT size, this was a blessing in disguise! What did I learn from my last outing? For 40+ years I have spoken at great length with boat builders and designers - bouncing ideas off of them as to 'What if I put this over here and then .....?' I have learned I will PROBABLY not try to improve any of the rigs on my boats as they are highly evolved/tried/tested and I complicate things when I try to change my M-17 from what it is to a tall rig/double lower rig! Leave it alone - Now I have to measure my lowers and send them back to Jerry Montgomery the Rigger extraordinaire - so I don't wrap the whisker pole around them again. Years ago I was racing my newly acquired black M-10 against some guys from California (same Arizona Yacht club -36 years earlier) This guy from California kept asking me "Why do you have your Cunningham rigged that way?" I didn't know it was wrong, I just wanted to beat the guy in the next race -he was still ahead of me by a couple of points! I finished 2nd overall, California Hotshot type dude finished 1st, but that is still one of my favorite trophies- 2nd place to the guy whose initial was on the sail of my boat. Thanks for the great sailing memories Jerry. Lesson learned - Keep It Simple Stupid. Listen to the guy who drew it/built it/wrote it,etc. Have Fun in the process and think MANY times about the consequences of changing something that works just fine. Do NOT stop trying to improve things! Be prepared for 'excitement' if you improve things. This was thrown up to change the subject thread on our favorite list. And I am SOOOOOO Excited to be going to Lake Havasu October 19th-21st to go sailing with Jo and Sean and Dauntless. Got me a good 'Boat Grunt' for crew too- "Frenchie-King of the Goats"! Factory prepped for big crossing

"Hi Tim I don't think the owner is on this list. He is from Austria and lives in Namibia in Africa. He ordered the boat to be built to where we were ready to deck it; then he flew in for us to add his custom requirements. No engine. Were attaching custom oar locks on a sliding 1.25 inch genny track; watertight hatches, solar charging system, GPS, stainless opening ports..etc windvane (were working on the windvane project this week)..up size some of the cables, cover the rudder in glass..etc.. An interesting project. Bob" Hey Bob. Thanks for the update. It would be fun to keep up with this project. Do you know where he is leaving from and when? And where his planned destination is? Had you or he thought to raise the 'bridge deck' area or raise the lower opening of the companionway? Bigger scuppers? Any keel mods or changes? You had mentioned rig changes (I think...?) Staysail? Heavier wire or even extrusions? An interesting choice of no motor and oars instead. Leaves more available weight for stores etc. What fun. Have there been other Atlantic crossings in M17's? (N. Atlantic?) The only major crossing I had heard of was the M15 Little Wing to HI. Cheers, Tim M17 Puff

"Thanks for the inquiry Tim. The halyards need to be run inside the mast, wood work is dry and in need of oiling, port acrylic is fogged and should be replaced, needs new battery, v-berth paneling is original and should be replaced to match that in the main cabin. Bottom will need to be repainted eventually. Mostly cosmetic work. The sails are in good shape. A Honda 7.5 came with it when I bought it but it is physically too big for the transom and I would recommend getting a smaller one to use. I have had the boat over ten years after trading up from a M-17. However, the boat is too heavy for any vehicle I had and never got a truck big enough to haul it. Never had it in the water. Hi All: IF I remember correctly, old gel coat from the 70's and 80's, would blister, eventually if the cured gel coat film thickness got to be less than 20 mils. It can be thin to start with (i.e. not enough gel coat sprayed into the mold) or it can get thin by repeated sanding. Any way you get it, thin gel coat is going to blister. I am just doing my M-17 bottom and find the blisters in patches, (from vigorous sanding by PO's I'm guessing). Any time I take the bottom paint off down to the gel coat, I apply at least two coats of a barrier coat as a matter of course because if it isn't blistered, it will be the next time I haul out. Low quality gel coat, and/or improper application are also sources. Just my $.02 worth!
