Ashley, lowering the gate is easy, just do it very slowly and very carefully, will look and work just fine. I made my gate just large enough for the boom slide to fit in easily, no more. And I positioned my gate low enough that when the S/S cotter key (just above the gate) is pulled out, the boom can be lowered into the gate and moved aft out of the gate IF you raise the aft end of the boom slightly above the cabin sliding hatch. OR, just the right position if you put a PFD cushion on the cabin top to protect both boom and cabin, and just slide it aft on the cushion. As soon as it is out, the main comes the rest of the way down and all the slugs come out easily. Let me know (anyone!) if you do this and like it. Hurrah for Bob Eeg! In my last epistle (Jan.15/07) I expressed serious doubts about the boat being ready by the end of Jan. I apologize to Bob. It was ready on time in spite of the need for finding a new bimini supplier. I'm amazed by the quality of workmanship--nothing slipshod. Also, Bob spent two hours explaining all the rigging,and answering questions from a couple of novices with the utmost patience. He even supported his explanations with detailed drawings to help us remember. All in all we are extremely happy with our experience. "Li'L Nan" trailed home beautifully. We left sunny California and 70 degrees for Thunder Bay and -25. When is spring? Regards, Harry Elmslie.

I am non-competitive, so my outlook is for ease, not speed. My first M15 had bolt rope, and I laboriously changed her over myself, always happy with it. A BIG pain to be sure. I agree it might make a difference to performance to some degree but I'd have to guess that a great deal more than a bolt rope in the main is what got you across the finish line fast. There aren't enough organized races where I sail to worry too much about a speeding ticket however, I have noticed I sail circles around P19's in a fresh 10 to 15knts and I like that. But I'm wondering if slugs would compromise that enough to be noticeable and if over the length of a single tack (let alone an afternoon of sailing) other more important points will come in to play to have me in the lead. I think I'm more interested in the convenience trade of slugs. And a bit of added safety along those lines for that matter.
