I changed the clam cleats to cam cleats on my boat. I didn't want to drill more holes, so I mounted the new cleats on a 1/2" thick piece of plastic and then mounted the plastic mount to the boat using the existing holes and screws. I used a piece of plastic cutting board, the same as I used to build a shim for the hatch that I installed in the foredeck. Mounting the cleats this way is a smart idea and has worked out well, but I can't take credit for the idea. I lifted it from Doug Kelch who did the same to his boat. I'm sure I have a picture of this setup somewhere. I plan to put it on my website soon, but software development is very slow during boating season. Hi Donglai, If you haven't done any fiberglass repair work before, and need help, get the Gougeon Brother's book; "Product Guide and Technical Manual". They are the originators of the WEST System (Wood Epoxy Saturation Technology), and sell epoxy products. WEST Marine carries their products and probably also has the book. The book tells you in great detail how to do all the necessary maintenance work of fiberglass - filling craze cracks, repairing dings and scratches; and how to cut, fix, and modify anything made of fiberglass. It's the "bible" to get you started. Their other book, "Fiberglass Boat Repair and Maintenance" ($3.00 in my '99 WEST Marine catalog) covers things like mounting hardware, so take a look at this one too. This should make you an "expert" who can tackle any problem or modification you might want to consider making on your Montgomery. ============= Winterizing: I kept my M15 outdoors all winter long. I had a tarp that was about 18 feet long over the mast, and then tied down to the trailer frame. Here in Connecticut we get some pretty hefty snowfalls, and I never had a problem ..... Of course, at the end of the sailing season, I totally emptied out the boat, and stored everything in my cellar. Honda winterizing: About the only thing you have to do is either: 1. Totally empty the fuel tank; carburetor bowl so that the fuel system is dry, or, 2. Add Stabil (a long time gasoline stabilizer, available at NAPA or marine stores) to the gasoline in the tank. This keeps the gasoline from gumming up jets and lines. 3. If you used the engine in salt water, then a run in a test tank filled with fresh water, should clean out the salt water. Since my engine was also stored in the cellar - not subjected to freezing temperatures - that's all I did. 4. Remove the spark plug and put in some preservative oil to mist the cylinder walls and valves. Replace the spark plug finger tight till spring. Also store the engine on the proper side - so that the crankcase oil doesn't escape. Connie

Hello Everyone, The jib sheet clamcleats that came with my M15 is worn. I'd like to replace them with cam cleats. I want to know how to remove the old clam cleat holes and put in new ones for the cam cleats. The clam cleats are oriented vertically whereas the cam cleats are arranged horizontally. What do you suggest I use to fill the clam cleat holes? I see both fiberglass fix kit and epoxy kit. Should I use the fiberglass stuff or should I use the epoxy stuff? Or something else? Also, I have never worked fiberglass before so I don't know how they behave when drilled. How should I put in the new screw holes for the cam cleats? Thanks! Donglai M15 #612

Hello Steve, I hear what you say about the "bending" part. Sometimes the back is a bit slow to wake up in the morning. Oh well, as they say, the alternative is FAR worse. I'm 6'2". I think the only two boats in the 20 foot range I have ever been able to stand up straight in are the San Juan 28 and the Bristol Channel Cutter. If you're tall and you want that feature, you may be looking for a boat in the 30' range. Later, Bones

winter sailing/storage questions

Not that I'm looking forward to the winter but it is heading this way. I wonder how does everyone 'winterize' their M -boats? My boat is so simple, there is no water or electrical system to worry about. Should I shrink wrap it? Anything special I need to do for the fiberglass hull or the mast? Should I take down all the riggings? Should I paint the bottom in the fall or in the spring? I have a 2HP Honda outboard, how should I winterize/store that? Any part of the boat sensitive to cold temperatures? Anything special I need to do if I want to store it outside? What are necessary winter sailing gears? I'd appreciate any advice for frostbiting. Thoughts on Downsizing

In 34 years of sailing I have been fortunate to have owned and sailed a number of trailerable sailboats in the 18' to 26' size (having upsized and downsized a number of times). The Montgomery 17 was always on my list of want-to-try boats. So, when a larger boat with standing headroom was out of my financial reach and a project M17 came along, it was not a hard decision. With the "project" part mostly over, the joy of sailing the M17 is coming into full. The dingy like handling with the added bonus of cruise camping capability is an outstanding feature. And, when the sailing is over the retrieving is a snap with the smaller scale M17 (trailer tongue extension not withstanding). This all being said, I will probably continue my quest for a larger boat with standing headroom in a few years. My wife and sailing friend does not embrace the "character building" confines of the smaller boat and I will have to say that I do not "bend" as easily as I used to. Hi Giles, More thoughts: With an M15 or M17 hooked up to your car, you can be in Maine, Lake Huron, Florida Keys, or lots of other interesting sailing areas in a matter of hours. Try that with your Vancouver 25. You don't need a Marina to keep the small boat, and pay yearly Marina fees. The downside, of course is that you only have sitting headroom in the M17 cabin. Bigger is more luxurious =s more stuff that goes on board and has to be removed at the end of the season. We used to laugh and say emptying out our 29 footer at the end of the season, was the equivalent of moving a three room apartment. It's the old tradeoffs all over again: smaller is very mobile = limited interior comfort but low costs and expenses more comfort = larger with less mobility and higher costs (dockage / hauling charges) The better you can define your planned uses for the boat; areas where you want to sail; the closer to the ideal solution you get.
