Todd, Nice photos (as always). Isn't funny that someone would have invested so much money in a large yacht yet not know enough to trim their sails at least little better than that! I enjoyed the story. So sorry to hear that Bilbo has seen his last sailing trip. I have really enjoyed seeing pics of him accompanying you on all your sailing trips. I understand, as only another dog lover can, how difficult it is to see your friend of so many years starting to struggle. Last year I lost both of my pups of thirteen and fourteen years respectively. My hat is off to you for recognizing that even though you'd still love to have him along every time you sail, that he has reached the point where it's just not comfortable for him anymore. I hope that even though Bilbo has "hung up his foulies for the last time" you guys still have many years ahead to enjoy each others company. Sean

Drying Out was M-15 CB

There is a guy on the Tartan 27 web site that has been using a two stage vacuum pump to dry out his deck core and keel. He claims to be able to pull a vacuum so strong that he can boil water with an ambient temperature below 50 degrees F. His user name is "cstroup". He has posted under both the "Discussion" and "Projects" forums. He uses several descant filters and a "cold filter" with dry ice to condense out the extracted moisture. This guy has really given some thought to the process. I have no idea how much a two stage pump costs, but the concept of drilling a hole to suck the water out and then pump resin back in sure sound appealing to me. http://www.tartan27owners.com/discussion.htm OT along these lines - I have a section of sill plate in my detached garage that has wood rot. The outer third is soft, the inner is solid. Also the tail ends of some rafters are "slightly" rotten. The garage did not have any ventilation and a PO planted several trees too close. We have cut down the trees and replaced most of the old siding with plywood. We will install new siding and soffits. I am hung up on dealing with this sill with the rot. I am think of using a penetrating epoxy from www.rotdoctor.com or Git Rot. Please contact me off list if you have any suggestions as to whether this is a good or bad idea. Thanks, steve Steve R. Follow up on M-15 Centerboard

Tom, This is from Sean (the guy with the 23 in Havasu). It's possible you might have both lead and steel punchings in your keel. Mine had a couple of lead ingots up in front but the majority was steel punchings. If I'm not mistaken, I think Theo Petron's 23 (which also had the same problem), had a combination. I think he had more lead than steel. If you dremeled into a lead ingot it would look shiny. Just a thought. I feel your pain! It kind of sucks when you are trying to figure out what the heck is going on and what you are going to do about it. I'm sure other folks on here will chime in with some advice. I can't tell you anything specific about the 15 as I haven't owned one. Keep the faith!!! Oh yes, my punchings were saturated in resin in some areas and not in others. One thing that was odd was that upon opening the cavity the punchings did not appear very rusty. About two or three days later after the cavity was drained and they had been exposed to air they were totaly covered in surface rust. Rust or not, you really want to get that moisture out of there. I've read a few places that chronic standing water on the inside of the hull can play a bigger part in blistering than the water outside the hull. Initially, before I became concerned about rust and swelling of the keel slot, I just thought I'd drain the cavity through a couple of small holes and pump compressed air through it for as long as it took to dry it out. Then plug the holes and be done with it. That was before I realized it was full of steel and not lead. After opening the cavity up I realized that I could have pumped air through there for a year! The punchings were packed so tight, and it was such a labrynth of resin mixed in with them that I don't think they would have ever dried out. I'd suggest that you hang tight for a couple of days and see what kind of advice you get from some other owners who have tackled this with an M15. If you can avoid the radical nature of the repair I've undertaken, I would. If not, be ready to get the wet stuff out and then let her dry out for as long as you can before you seal her back up again. I had Dauntless opened up for the better part of 4 or 5 months. Centerboard

Lets not forget that the older pre 1987 M_15s had steel shot for ballast. While most of these boats are fine, a number of them had (over the years) water intrude into the keel and start rusting the steel shot. As the steel rusts, the keel swells up and squeezes the centerboard. All M_15 centerboards pre 1987 also were fiberglass with steel shot inside. These also could swell up over the years and get stuck in the up position. The weight of all these fiberglass/steel shot boards was close to 45 pounds. Never more than about 47 pounds. All the M_boats after 1987, both in the 15 and 17 have lead instead of steel for ballast material inside the keel and inside the 45 pound centerboard. I doubt that Tom has dirt holding the board up. More likely the board, keel trunk or both has swelled up and is now stuck. Same for you Jim. Once you get the board out it has to be made thinner so it won't be sticky. (sand smooth and carefully remove some of the material on the fat part). We use nothing but pure lead. No rust, no swelling. Fair winds Bob (949) 489-8227 Robert Eeg bobeeg(a)earthlink.net Why Wait? Yet another cruising opportunity!

Well the Chesapeake Bay Cruise for 2006 is history and added many good memories to our cruising life. The San Juan Islands Cruise for 2006 is history and judging from the pictures it too was a great trip. The next cruise coming up is the Buzzards Bay - Martha's Vineyard week long cruise the last week of August (8/26 - 9/3). We already have 5 confirmed Montogomeries coming with interest from 3 more.
