Frans DInghy still for sale

Well, I really do want to get back on the water in a sail boat and I probably should give it another try. However, I cannot at this time!. So, Fran's Dinghy is still for sale. I cannot buy her. I guess I got a bit over zealous and should have kept my mouth shut. But sometimes my excitement gets the best of me. My apologies to anyone who was considering Fran's M 6-8 Dinghy. It may still be for sale. Bill

Just completed three albums on the Photo SIte. Go to the main page and click on "What's New" to find: 1. Norm Bundek in winning form in the Potter SoCal Dinghy Races 2. Photos from 2003 of "Chubby" she is the P-19 that sailed from Berkley to Hawaii. I took some shots of her when she was getting her new keel after the Hawaii trip 3. A very overdue album of Bob Becker's M15 "Bijou". Some of you may recall a few years ago when I got my first sail aboard a Montgomery 15. And "Bijou" was the one. Centerboard question M15

We jacked my M15 up a bit to see if the centerboard was still stuck (from last summer) and it wasn't; that's good, but the pin that it swings on seemed to be coming out of one side of the keel more than the other (like it had been pushed part way out. Is there something that is supposed to keep this pin in place? It looked like it might have at one time been epoxied in or something like that. Bobbie

New Monty Owner and Maiden Voyage

Hello All, My name is Allan and I recently purchased a 1977 Montgomery 17. The Hull ID is #251 and it is currently named Willie. We plan on changing the name but have decided on a new name yet. After doing a little work on the boat, my friend Linda and I took it on its maiden voyage (for us any way.) We took it to Lake Travis in Austin, TX and the first adventure was finding a place to launch. The lake is very low right now and most of the boat ramps are closed. We ended up launching off the beach at a county park. We got the boat in the water and the motor running (after drifting half way across the cove!) The next problem we found is that the centerboard is stuck! (Adventures for another day.) We motored out into the main body of the lake and hoisted sails. We killed the motor and sat. The lake was dead calm without a breath of wind. Looking down the lake, we saw a Sunfish with its little sail barely filled with air so we waited. We waited. Finally, the merest breath of wind came up and according to the GPS, we started making about 0.7 knots. Over the next hour or so, the winds picked up. I don't think the winds ever made it over 10 knots. We had a fun day of sailing in spite of all the little problems. According to the GPS, we actually made it up to 4.6 knots at one time but most of our time was spent making between 2 and 3 knots. We finally decided to pull the boat out of the lake as it was getting late in the day. (We can't sail at night because the lights don't work, another adventure for another day!) After loading on the trailer and getting the boat out, the mast down, the sails stowed, etc. We went down to the lake for a relaxing swim and some after-sailing beers (not to be confused with while-sailing beers). Of course, as the sun started to go down, the winds picked up! Overall, it was a good day. The boat still needs some little things but what boat doesn't. Allan #251 Willie (soon to be renamed)

Congratulations on your purchase and first sail, Allen. Sounds like it went real well for the first time out. Your patience was rewarded with some breeze and you didn't break anything! Several of us on the list can't claim that. Learning curves can vary, obviously. It sounds like you've done some sailing before and know what you're doing. Too bad, but not surprising, about the centerboard. Lots of the older boats like ours have had that problem. The e-mail archives are full of postings with suggestions on how to repair it. Enjoy your boat and the "fix her up" process. It can be as much fun as the sailing. Well.... maybe not, but it's better than most other things.
