Sorry Jerry, haven't seen Neil (or Kneel) as we used to call him, for several years. He went from sailboats to motorcycles and then we lost touch with him. I believe your humility in blaming Neil is only slightly correct. Seems to me that you and several of your buddies decimated the socal race circuit for quite some time before Neil went to work on the AZ crowd. By the time I got the boat, the only way to be competitive at home was to grovel with the committee for relief... If you come over this way to hunt this year, drop by for an adult beverage. Just an opinion on Portsmith Yardstick Numbers

Ashley and others concerning the flushdeck, I am the current owner of Coyote, Jerry's first FD, that although these are really neat boats, they aren't much different from the cabin models except for slightly less weight and a taller aspect rig. The main reason for the handicap number difference was the skill of the original owners/racers of these boats. The original reason for the flush deck was to beat the heck out of everything else out there. The owners were sailmakers, boat builders, super enthusiasts who tweaked and knew how to go fast. As a result, the numbers separated. As the boats got older and went to less competitive owners, the handicap numbers were never disputed or changed. Of the few FD boats still out there, few race, so new numbers are hard to negotiate. We still enjoy sailing and one or two races a year, but the boats are rated inappropriately for their present use. This is just one person's opinion, of course. Also, if you would be interested in going really fast, the Coyote is available for a new owner.... John in Tucson

Steve -- Very interesting and thanks. And I agree with you regarding the flush deck model. Anyone out there have an understanding of design that can shed some light? I'm fairly sure both 17' models would have the same hull so it's difficult to understand how only aerodynamics could have such an impact. Ashley T. I took a CSV file and sorted it in excel to group all the Montgomery models together. The rating is D-PN not PHRF. I used two layers of the "composite" wood from Home Depot. It is glued together with Polyurethane adhesive. I cut it down to approximate the original bunk wood. I routed the edges of the new material and used stainless for all the bolts for attachment to the entirely sand blasted, primed and repainted trailer and bunk supports. I topped off the composite bunks with a 3/8" layer of white high density polypropylene fastened with stainless wood screws then rounded off the edges. There is NO carpeting. Will this scratch my gel coat? I will report later on that. It made a nice neat job but I am not sure how all of this will fair with UV or salt water. I hate rust, rot and poor craftsmanship so I took my time. This is all an experiment. Good Night and Good Luck. ----MMP Hull # 189. About bunk material, has anyone looked into some of the imitation deck material, Replaces Redwood. A bit pricey but looks nice, won't rot or splinter or split. That is definitely in the forever category. Regards, Ken

Loved the video! I just got back from Maui last week and would have loved to have my M15 there. After viewing their video, I called Matson shipping lines to see how much it would cost to send my M15 there for my next trip. Unfortunately, it costs $3,800 one way. I think I'll just dream about it and replay Ron and Jen's video in my mind. Ron or Jen, what is the block at the base of your mast? The block shows up at 45 seconds into the video while Ron is attending to the jib. It's just forward of our cabin hatch. I'm always interested in M15 modifications. Norm Bundek M15 #172

I just bought George Buntings' M15 from your "For Sail" site and am awaiting delivery. I haven't named her yet, but I had a new M15 "Joy" 22 years ago, sailed her for nine years, then health and finances allowed a larger one, so moved on. Now the same factors force a smaller sailboat, so back to the ever- perfect M15. I will sail her on my Beaver Lake in Northwest Arkansas, perhaps on other lakes and rivers in my area as Joy did. I am a retired Coast Guard SAR pilot, and a freelance writer, so you may see my new M15 in print, as was my original Joy. I'll not bore you with more at this point, need to sail and name her first!
