Great tips on the paints Howard. One thing I might add regarding locker/interior paint. I have long used regular house paint latex (good quality brand of course - semigloss) on my boats in the past with very effective results. Long ago I used to go the epoxy route but found that it wasn't necessary where the outside elements were not involved. My M15 is my first trailer sailor and all my previous experience was with boats I kept in Marina's through the years. Typically it would be a bit more hostile of an environment regardless that the lockers are internal and out of the weather. More chance for moisture due to condensation, etc. I repainted the lockers out when I bought the 15 and it looks fantastic. I even had the store match the color to the original so it's factory fresh and finish. As with anything, preparation is key for good adhesion. My two cents. Epoxy paints chalk in the sun. What you want is a two party LPU like Awlgrip or the Interlux version of the same thing. I think Jerry has also suggested using the automotive paints, like Imron, over an epoxy primer. These are nasty products to spray however. Takes special breathing equipment to avoid serious harm to your pipes. Can be rolled and tipped. Plan B on fiberglass is to use the one part (so called polyurethane) like Brightsides (really an oil based paint...says alkyd right on the can). Pretty easy to do. I've also heard others swear by simple old Rustoleum. All will probably look good if you prep the surface before you paint. All these will show every flaw if you look close. So the quality is up to you. Flawless......looks ok from 10 feet.......or won't be noticed by a man from 50 feet galloping by on a horse. It has occurred to me more than once that the MSOG site, if Doug is still up for it, would be a good place to host examples and fixes for the most common problems on these boats. As they age, the same things pop up on most boats. Everything from rudder, CB and keel repairs, electrical system upgrades, to windows to gelcoat cracks. He put up a copy of a survey he had for Vixen and as I was reading it, I noticed the same problems on my boat. Same would be true for the 15. No reason to fret about it or to re-invent the wheel. Here are my experiences in reefing my M15 "Joy": I trailed up to Stockton Lake in Southwest Missouri, noted for fine (and high) winds for great sailing in Nov., 1989. She already had two automobile batteries in her bilge, one for lights and electronics, one for her auxiliary power of a Minn-Kota trolling motor (permanently mounted through the hull and just aft of the keel), so she had a lot more stability than original! When winds piped up, my first move was always to lower the boom as far as possible. That always made a major difference for me. Then a single reef in the main, then reef the jib (most effective, set and drew very well), then a second in the main. My sailing journal has these abbreviated notes (and my speeds were as measured with the hand-held Dwyer wind gauge, and the also hand-held Knotstick): With boom lowered, all reefs in, and Dwyer reading rarely below 20 mph, usually 20 to 30 plus, some gusts over 40, Joy frequently went 5 1/4 knots on a close to beam reach. The next day, with Dwyer telling me pretty steady 30 to 40, and waves running one to three fret, we had a ball, with a wet one occasionally coming over the rail to get me. Water temp was 57°, cool! (I was only 60 back then, and a lot more adventurous than I can afford--physically and mentally--to be now!) I will await any good answers to Donglai's request for how to remove vinyl numbers and names. I am anxiously awaiting, this week I hope, the delivery of my new (to me, an "86) M15 being trucked in from Los Gatos. John Butler ˜˜˜˜˜˜/)˜˜˜˜˜ Sailing again! Praise the Lord!

I'm curious about kites for the 15's. I see allot of discussion but I haven't seen any comments about the lack of a back-stay and if a runner is needed. I'm not sure if the dropped aft shrouds are sufficient, or if only up to a predetermined wind force. I wouldn't mind flying one myself too but I have just always assumed there wasn't enough mast support. Even flown from the fractional height of the head-stay I have tended to think the forward pressure from one of these would be too great. Ashley T. The Yellow Hulled M-15 Photo was on the Arizona Game and Fish Brochure - The owner was, I believe, a past commodore of the Arizona Yacht Club (for the price of ? can not remember her name - nice lady) The photo was purported to be taken at Roosevelt Lake. Hello, I wish I could race my boat, unfortunely most the clubs around here use the PHRF rating sytem and restrict boats under 20 feet from racing. They also frown on boats with trunk keels. I had an asymmetrical spinnaker on my first M15 "Joy" and it did indeed pull like a Kenworth in a decent breeze, hull speed plus, and what a rooster tail wake! John
