lateral mast movement when raising/lowering

I want to be able to raise/lower my mast (using my winch). It appears to me that I would have to use T-ball fittings on the mast for stays that have a pivot point in line with the mast pivot point. I.e., would not the current shrouds, with the fitting at the deck level which is below the pivot point on the mast allow the mast to move from side to side during the initial lifting area? With the Beneteau 235, which had the mast pivot point about 15" off of the deck, I installed T fittings about 6' up the mast, with a line/wire down to a pivot point in line with the mast pivot point - hence when raising the mast it could not move from side to side during the entire lift. It appears this will be necessary with the M-17? In short, if you use the shrouds to keep the mast from moving laterally, doesn't it move too much side to side during a lift to raise it w/o having someone in the boat guiding it? Hello, After researching for several months on which boat to buy, I have decided on a M-17, used if I could find one. One problem though, I would like to look at one in person before committing several thousand dollars on one sight unseen. If you need to use it in rough seas, get a long shaft. That way the prop stays in the water most of the time when you're pitching up and down. My choice in motors would be a Yamaha. They have one of the best parts/service systems in the world. The 3.5 HP seems too large for a 15, but when motoring home into a stiff wind, a bit more is good. I just cruised up highway 23 (on a Motorcycle) on the Eastern shore of Michigan last July. You live in one of the most beautiful parts of this country that I've seen. Enjoy your new boat. Sandy

second "new" M17 owner

We just bought an '83 M17 after owing/sailing Coronado 15, Hobie 16 (3), 6 Hobie 18s; Stiletto 27; Merit 25; Impulse 26; B-25; new '90 Montgomery 17; 235 Beneteau, and now the '83 M17! We did a lot of racing in an earlier life, and the truth be known, if there is one other boat where we are, we're "racing!" Most of our sailing has been on San Francisco Bay. We've been out in everything the Bay has to offer. At no time did I feel like we might not get home when using the M17; maybe felt like we might get wet, but we'd get home -- and we always did! Spent many nights trailering to Sausalito where we'd spend the weekend. Can't beat the price. Then, $15 per night for dock space, restroom key (with showers) and close to all kinds of good food. Many trips to Angel Island and down City Front. We had an Autotiller, so on the way back to Sausalito in the late afternoon, we'd set that and snuggle up against the cabin and back we'd go! This current boat needs some TLC but have great plans for it (and its trailer). The first thing I've always done with our boats is install great trailer guides so the boat can only go in and come out the right way. (We've mainly had to launch/retrieve by using a 20' long tow strap to back the trailer out under the water..and same for retrieval). Guides speeds up the launching and retrieval dramatically. With the last M17 we could, from the top of the ramp, rig and launch and be sailing away, after parking the trailer, in 13 minutes or less - every time! Same with that Beneteau 235 .. and it had a 28' mast with a wing keel. This time I am even going to install an electric winch so mast raising can easily be a one person job w/o any lifting! Have another autotiller to go on the boat. Again, 99% of our sailing will be in San Francisco, Monterey, Tahoe and in the Delta. Hope to see some of you folks out there. Jay and Kathleen

Jay, Great story. I have sailed SF Bay as well and it can get rather "sporty" to say the least. After all the boats you have sailed, it warms the soul that you have come back to a beloved M17. I resist selling my M17 after finding and purchasing an M23 simply because I love the 17, have put a lot of work into her, I wish to have a trailer sailor, and she is SO much fun to sail. TP10 auto tiller installation

I just bought a new TP10 auto tiller. Does anyone have one in their M15? If you do, how did you mount it to the side? Mine is 2" short of the starboard side cockpit wall in it's recommended installation position. It looks like I would have to make something at least 3 1/2" in depth away from the inside wall to mount it. I really don't want something protruding into the cockpit permanently, but it may be the only way. Do you have a picture of your installation? Norm Bundek M15 #172

Flyaway hatches

It happened to me too! When I was bringing home my brand-new-to-me M17 (Harvey Wilson's Stargazer, re-named Tiny Dancer). Very fortunately, it landed in the cockpit... chewed up a corner of the hatch, but fortunately that's it. I didn't know if this was a factory feature or an owner mod, and now I know. Lifting out the hatch can be nice 'cause you have little headroom with the hatch slid forward, but I seldom lift the hatch all the way out. Lock it before trailering! Cockpit Hatch Cover Replacement

So I have had my 1974 M-17, Fore Play, for 5 years now and never knew that the sliding cockpit hatch could fly away! The one time I did not lock the hatch before trailering, it lifted off and disappeared somewhere up Logan Canyon. I spent 6 hours driving back up and down the canyon without luck. I am just very grateful that it did not hit some poor soul. So, be aware, it could happen to you! In the meantime, Jerry, is it possible to order a new one or will I have to try to build one?!
