North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. My new mountgomery 15

Hi folks, I'm buying a new Montgomery 15 and would appreciate any information you could give me on several issues. My sailing will be on wild and wooly Lake Superior (water 40 degrees F and big storms). Auxiliary motor: I'd like the quietest one; was thinking of a Mercury 3.5hp vs a Honda 2hp?; short or long shaft? Cabin heater: any experience with an Origo alcohol heater? Tender: I am a kayaker and hope to tow my kayak behind the Mont.15. Would this create too much drag? Trailer tires: the best tires for long distance trailing in winter (Jan /07 from S.Cal. to our home in Thunder Bay on Lake Superior. Overall length and width of Mont.15 on a Pacific trailer? (I'm hoping to squeeze it in between my shed and garage) I am really excited about getting one. Everything I have read and heard sounds like it is a great little boat. Josh at Small Craft Advisor was very helpful. I've made the first of three payments to Bob Eeg. I don't know if construction has started yet(no news is good news?), but my wife and I will pick it up in California at the end of Jan. 2007. I'll keep you posted as to its progress. Hello to Harry & Nancy! You'll love sailing your M15 on Superior...we sail mostly the waters around Duluth MN, and have had the pleasure of exploring the Thunder Bay area a bit. >Auxiliary motor: I'd like the quietest one; was thinking of a Mercury >3.5hp vs a Honda 2hp?; short or long shaft? We use the venerable Honda 2HP, short shaft; it's been reliable, a little noisy, very easy on gas (we used 2/3 gallon for a 7 day cruise on L. Nipigon this summer - but then we're rarely in a hurry). I can't exactly recall why we got the short shaft; it's a few pounds lighter than the long shaft, and on the 15 you do want to minimize the weight hanging out back, IMHO. Also, on starboard tack the short shaft is less likely to drag if you use the "tilt and rotate" method of raising the Honda. The prop will occasionally come out of the water in bouncy conditions if you have weight forward (e.g. crew on the bow). >Trailer tires: the best tires for long distance trailing in winter (Jan >/07 from S.Cal. to our home in Thunder Bay on Lake Superior. We did the same trip - in April. The large tires on the Pacific trailer inspire confidence - I think they would be fine for winter driving; allow extra time to avoid any bad road conditions that time of year -- yikes! We stopped by the Pacific factory for a pre-trip inspection and adjustment before setting off over the divide. Todd, Your North Channel trip sounds intriguing, but a quick Mapquest check brought me back to reality. Over 2000 miles one way gets real expensive at 12mpg. Guess I'll have to stick to the great northwest for my cruising. How about keeping us dreamers on the list posted from time to time of how the trip plans are shaping up, and I'll do the same for any cruises we get going for the northwest gang. There had been mention of a Montgomery cruise in the North Channel of Lake Huron some time next summer. In the interest of providing fodder for winter pipe dreams, I have uploaded a crude chart of the area. I say "crude" because I patched together three screen shots from the American Raster Navigational Chart (RNC) of Lake Huron. Since the North Channel is in Canada, the American chart details of the area are very sketchy and are intended only to give a feel for the area. (Canada does not make their RNC's available for free). I added a few labels for major/famous geographical features for the purposes of discussion. There are more islands than you can shake a stick at and many of them are uninhabited and owned by the Crown so you may go ashore for a hike. Some have summer cottages on them, however. This should be considered a wilderness trip, although there are a few small villages around the perimeter, and at the height of the season there may be quite a few fellow boaters. My last trip up there was at the beginning of the season and most nights I had the anchorages to myself despite comfortable, mild weather. Your internet browser should be capable of viewing that kind of file. Later on this winter I'll send out another e-mail with more information to start an e-mail group for anyone who thinks they might be interested in such a trip, either actually or vicariously, so as not to clutter up this list. There is a tremendous amount of very hard rock up there, so attention to navigation is recommended (unlike my navigation on the Buzzard's Bay trip this last summer). A fishfinder is helpful...to an extent. In many places the bottom rises so rapidly (wall of rock) that warning from a fishfinder would come too late. In some areas, the water is very clear (I've seen the bottom over thirty feet below). In others, near the mouths of rivers, the water is very dark with tanin and visibility is only an inch or two. A dinghy or kayak would make a great way to spend an afternoon, poking around the shallows. I got a new Honda 2HP with the M17 - is the 2HP sufficient? I had a 4 before and it was fine. Thanks for any info. jay
