Auto Pilot mounting

I am curious about how others have mounted their auto pilots on M17's. I have an older Navico Tiller-pilot and at first glance the coaming is too far away, and the cockpit seat in too far below the tiller for any convenient mounting arrangement? How have others accomplished this? Or do real men (M17 sailor-persons) not require stinking autopilots? Good gracious. Peeing in the lake David? Does Bill know about this? I have to believe dropping solid waste in a lake is a no-no about everywhere. Open ocean--different story. I almost convinced Larry Yake a couple of times the M15 is faster than the M17--matter of fact, in very light winds I believe it is. Not when it starts to blow, however. Now, could Jerry in an M15 beat me in an M17? He told me that he felt like my M-15 actually out- performed his (now Tom's) M-17. Hi Gang, While we're on this subject, let me add a laugh for the day. When we had our Tripp-Lentsch on the Chiemsee in Southern Germany, our direct toilet discharge into a lovely pristine mountain lake bothered me. In those days, The Raritan Company made a Macerater / Chlorinator to hang on the output side of the toilet which emulsified and added chlorine and had a holding tank to allow chemistry to function, before sending the result overboard. Great solution said I, and ordered one from Raritan, who sent it to Munich, Germany by air freight. Now I had to fill out German Customs paper work to import it into the country. I went to their office and went through all their categories of products looking for a good product number to fill in on my Customs Form, which I then had to take to the Airport and hand to the Customs Agent. Not finding anything like a macerator / chlorinator listed, I was forced to pick a number - any number - just to get a stamp on my Customs Import papers. Then it was off to the Airport. I got a very young Customs Inspector. We opened the wooden crate, and there it was: a white rectangular plastic box, with various pipe connection plugs around the outside, and an electric motor sticking out on top. I explained what it was used for, which only caused wrinkles on the Customs agent's forehead. Finally he departed, leaving me standing there with my white plastic box. A few minutes later he returned with his boss. He asked me to give him the explanation again, which I did. This is hooked up to a marine toilet, I said, when you flush the toilet, what was in the toilet bowl goes into the first chamber of this white box. Then you press the button and the electric motor chops everything up and adds chlorine. It sits there and is sanitized. With the next toilet use, what was in compartment No.1 goes to compartment No. 2, while the new arrival is processed in compartment No. 1 again. As I explained it: when you press the button, the motor starts and inside the box, the music goes round and round.... He stood there for a moment, then turned to the young Customs Inspector and said, ..... Simple! It's a food processor accessory, and is Category 325175, with a 5% duty; ....turned and walked away. I paid my 5% duty, grabbed my Raritan Macerater / Chlorinater and took off........ So now you know: German Customs says we're talking about a food processor accessory! Connie

trailer tires

Back in the late 90's we discussed trailer tires for the M15. It was suggested that radial tires are as good a bias tires, give a smoother ride and are less expensive. I purchased three 145 12" radials at Sears for $ 14. each. After many happy miles one of the tires blew while towing to Lake Don Pedro this past week just outside of Modesto. I'm having a heck of a time finding 12" radials. Are they still available? Can you tow with one bias and one radial? There's a M15 and a M17 listed for sale in this month's issue of Latitude 38. Rich: radial tires and Hogin Sails

Rich, Sorry about the delayed response regarding your Hogin and radial tires queries. First, regarding the 'new' Hogin sails--I have not used them yet. I did talk to them at length at the boat show, and it seemed like they were trying hard to get the kinks worked out and assemble a reliable crew. I heard that it was a bit rocky at the start, but that they are finding their 'groove' now. At some point, I thought I would send a small project their way and see how it goes. I like the idea of having a small, local loft, and I hope they do well. I am encouraged that they are still in business. I would defer to those who have actually used them recently for better info. As for the 12" radial tires--yes, they are still out there. They will almost certainly have to be passenger car tires, as the smallest true trailer-rated radials I have found are in 13." They will likely be an order-only item for most shops, but I would bet that if you went to a better tire shop (as opposed to Sears or WalMart), they can get them. I have had good luck with ordering tires from www.tirerack.com. Their prices, including shipping, are usually very competitive. They ship from Reno, and there is usually no sales tax. Personally, I would replace them in pairs, as different brands/models may well have different sidewall flex characteristics. I carry an identical spare as well. My 12" Goodyear Tiempo radials show virtually no signs of wear, and will likely last decades at this present rate. I keep them slathered in 303 Protectant, and out of UV. I am fully aware of the caveats regarding passenger car radials on trailers. It is true that the sidewalls flex *much* more than a trailer-rated radial or trailer bias ply tire, but for purposes of the lightweight M15/trailer, I have found that the passenger radials have worked very well. I have been particularly happy with the *much* softer ride (less road shock transferred to boat). If I had an M17 or M23 (or for that matter, any trailer with 13" or larger rims), I would opt for a true trailer-rated (ST) tire (radial or no). my idea of a great sail

I have not contributed anything this year but have read most of the postings. I apologize for the absence. I left work early to go for a sail and feel too good about it not to share my experience. The little 15 footer kicked some butt today, passing many 22 to 25 footers that only had a jib or a reefed main up cause it was blowing 12 to 15 with gust a little higher. I never heeled more than 20 or 25 degrees, feathered and dumped the main sail while not touching the jib. I have a lot of rake in the mast and the boat tended to round up before getting in too much trouble. I have now owned this 15 footer for 5 years and am still amazed at its performance. A light weight 18' daysailor and my Montgomery 15 went neck to neck for a half hour, each leaping ahead when conditions best suited each. I had a lengthy chat with the crew as we sailed within ten feet of each other. Sailors are easy people to talk to. It's 7 miles from my slip to the dike at Lake Wallenpaupak in the Pocono Mountain area in NE Pa. It's a North South lake and winds were out of the West. One tack was all that was needed each way. 3 hours round trip, exactly equal times 1.5 hours. At the dike there was a bald eagle that took a liking to my mast and did a full 360 glide just above mast height. This was the first time I ever saw a bald eagle and he gave me a front row seat. I sailed out of and back into the slip. Life is good. Jerry Williams

Boat loading technique

Hi All, I had a devil of a time retrieving my M-17 until I remembered a technique used in canoeing. If one has two lines, one stern and one bow, and keeps the stern short while the bow is longer the boat will track up the dock by pulling mostly on the stern line. I found it easier to load the boat this way. I was more able to center the keel & hull. I've used this technique to "walk" a loaded canoe for long distances, along a shore line. Which is sometimes necessary if the winds or waves are too much for a paddler. I've found I can keep the boat tracking forward with the bow out a little while I'm dry and on the beach. Yes, I've seen the rudder. My problem is that the past owner designed his own rudder and holder. I don't think the Ida rudder would be held properly in my design. I would probably have to buy the stock rudder tiller and holder. Then buy the Ida rudder. Do you use the Ida? Maine Cruise

I just returned home from the Maine Cruise. If a better group of people or a better place to cruise can be found please let me know. We had a wonderful time. Thanks Kate, Thomas, Doug, Tod and Abbey. We had a Pearson Ariel (Kate and Thomas) for a few days and one M17 and three M15s for the entire two weeks. We had two days of rain, one of high winds and the rest was beautiful, warm and sunny. We sailed all around Penobscot and Blue Hill Bays and into the Gulf of Maine where the swells were so high that I lost the top of the masts of the boats that were ahead of me when I was in a trough. All boats performed well and I always felt safe and secure in my M15. We had some great hikes and the contrast between sailing and hiking was a good balance. Maine seems full of these contrast ie. rocks and water, sun then fog then sun, and forrest so thick that they are impassable without a trial just a hundred feet from the shore line. We ate plenty of lobster and saw more beautiful classic sailboats then I have ever seen in one area. Every harbor was like thumbing through ten issues of Wooden Boat magizine. Oh yeh, we went to Wooden Boat School too, very cool. If you like cruising Maine is not to be missed. I love my home waters, the Hudson River, but I have a feeling it's just not going to be the same after sailing through those beautiful islands. Rick Langer "Bluebird"
