I have been told by trailer manufacturers that the weight of the keel should be supported by the pan (roller in this case) and the bunks or pads should carry the weight of the balance of the boat. I am in the process of repairing the bunks and keel guides on my 1980 Trail-Rite and am adding the center bunk support at the crossmember, chamfering the ends of the bunks (fore and aft) and may add foam to the bunks. The supports on my particular trailer are no where near the contour of the boat and this is being corrected to address the 'deflection' problem. PS. I have sold, in a previous life, literally hundreds of Trail-Rite trailers and would buy another one over virtually ALL manufacturers! (even the 'designer' types I have seen are no where near the quality of a Trail-Rite) NFIW. IMHO - The keel guides should be substantial material and as close to the bottom of the hull as reasonably possible when the boat is loaded. I have used 3" channel for the forward upright and a tab welded to the rear bunk support topped off by a 2x4 or 6 (clear) for the guide itself. Rear tab located as high as possible on the upright and the forward support carrying the board itself within an inch or two of the bottom of the hull. After trying and installing many variations and combinations on the theme (goal posts-keel guides-side rails) it is my view to use a well fitted set of keel guides only as they minimize collateral damage when loading in a survival situation. Here's a thought... I was always told a keel boat should rest about 50% on the keel and the ballance on the bunks or pads. When I first looked into Montgomery Boats I looked at Alina and the port bunk board was pushing into the hull enough to cause the hull to flex inward. After looking a several, I find that not all Center Boards are equal. What I mean is, some stick out of the slot more than others. On Alina, the board was out about 1/2" when all the way into the housing. That would effectively eliminate the possibility of the keel resting on a roller or shelf (would damage the CB or pivot pin). Others I've looked at, the CB is tucked into the keel housing very well and the keel would easily be able to support a good portion of the boat weight. I'm not to certain one size fits all when it comes to bunk boards and rollers on M-Boats. Maybe the hole drilled for the CB pivot pin is not "exact" in all boats of all years. If that's the case, it would be best to see what is there before commiting to one solution. There is one person who has added a third support to his bunks to help eliminate bunk board sag which had caused his CB to become damaged on the crossmember of the trailer. The jury is still out on this, but it is being watched as a possible alternative to CB damage from the trailer `crossmember on the "Trailrite" and maybe other trailers. Randy Graves has recently redone his Bunks and added a layer of closed cell foam under the carpet to help fit the lapstrake better. The idea came from a suggestion on the list. Randy is pleased with how the bunks came out and how the hull fits. Just thoughts Bill M-15 "Salty Lady" not ordered yet

Trailer guides

I have purchased the MacGregor 26 trailer guides from the local MacGregor dealer for $75 for the set (pair) for my M17. Unlike a lot of MacGregor parts, these "goal posts" are very strong and are almost an exact fit for the M17. I will post a picture when I get a chance. Note-Mounting requires drilling (4) clearance holes for 5/8" bolts. A little beyond the capabilities of most cordless drills! Secondly, I plan on adding keel guides as a secondary measure. Sometimes when winching the boat on the trailer when I have it too far in the water, the bunks bias on one of the lap strakes and it gets loaded slightly off center. It is simple to re-float and re-center with it winched up, but the keel guides would be foolproof. As a sidebar, EZ Loader Trailers are quite incredible (self centering roller bunks). I have seen boats come onto the trailer almost sideways and get centered correctly. Unfortunately, local experience had been that they also are easy Unloaders as well as several boats have been dumped on the launch ramp or freeway because of casual tie downs or lack of safety straps. Hi All, Just a little note to say how much I appreciate all of the appreciation of the Photo Site, and I'd like to share with all of you, today's sail. David Wood and I sailed M-15 Margarita for a couple of hours in mixed up winds both in strength from dead calm to 20 kts and from all directions and changing every five to fifteen minutes. We sailed with a Rhoades 22, full main and 130 Genoa which admitted we were very hard to catch (they didn't catch us) and one 20+ footer, maybe an aquarius, that just lowered the sails and motored in. There was one wind shift which hit particularily hard to our broad side jolting us awake, making me very happy I wasn't in a Potter 15, that's the kind of gust the P-15 sailors end up going turtle with. I love this boat! Next... as a follow up, I'm being mentored by David in web design, server selection, software suggestions and new photo editing software. I tell you, this guy is smart. You'll recall he did our new M-Boats line drawing Art work. What you may not know is he is a web design expert as well. Anyway, On the way back home I spent a bunch of money on books and software and I'll be working on making a real website for the MSOG pictures. Now, this takes time, so I'll continue to use Funtigo until I get a real plan and am able to create something better than we now have. My goal is to have a site "accessable to all" as well as have a server that keeps up with our demands. Finally, I would like to publically thank all of the people who have donated material as well as time to the site, it's you who are making the site what it is. You efforts, your fun and your willingness to help is a gift. Thanks! Bill

Boat Guides for Trailer

I'm considering adding boat guides to my trailer. Sometimes, when I pull my M-15 onto my trailer, the keel slips between the keel bunkboards. Also, the afternoon wind sometimes makes a straight pull onto the trailer difficult. Do boat guides make centering the keel on the bunkboards nearly "foolproof"? If yes, should I install the post type, board type, or roller type? Thanks! John Bella (M-15, 628)

I installed trailer guides, post type with PVC pipe over them on my trailer because I had the same problem lining up the boat on the trailer. I also had another problem which this helped fix. Once the boat was off the trailer, I could no longer see the trailer when I was backing it down the ramp. I had installed a toneau cover over the pick up bed and that added to the problem of obliterating the trailer from view. With the trailer guides it helped eliminate both problems. Got them from West marine catalog. Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617)
