Greetings, folks: I am a new member to this list as of this morning, and I must say I'm a little surprised at how active it is (I suppose, I really should read the archives!). In any event, it looks as if I'll learn plenty in here. I am currently living in the Lansing, Michigan area, but I consider Marquette to be home (You know, Michiganian by birth; Yooper, by the grace of God!). I'm probably not alone here is not actually owning a Montgomery. I have a 13 foot wooden yawl, which is currently being refinished (pictures can be seen on the Wooden Boat forum under Swifty 13, if you'd like a peek at her). It's a fun boat, but definitly an inland lake boat. She's hull #001 by the way, and was hand built by Fred Shell himself as the prototype for his line of boats. The picture of the Swifty 13, on his website, www.shellboats.com is my boat, which he kept for his own day sailer for several years after her build in 1992. I joined this list because I'm going to need something a little bigger to satisfy my urge to cruise the Great Lakes, and it didn't take long to decide that the M17, is not only a great boat, but it appears to meet (exceed) all of my needs. It's not going to happen this year, but with luck, I'd like to have one for next season. So, I'm up to my elbows refinishing a boat that I love, and dreaming about the next one... I've got it bad!

Honda 5HP Outboard

A few months ago I passed my Montgomery 15 on to a new owner (if he's lurking here, I hope that Umiaq is suiting well). Because the new owner wanted a smaller engine I still have a 5HP Honda sitting in the garage, and it's time to pass that on. Before I put it on e-Bay it seems a good idea to mention it to this group. If anybody is interested, drop me a line. I'm in the Washington DC suburbs. Giles

No, I did not put oil in the gas tank of this engine. Maybe my terminology was confusing since I'm not much of an engine or motor person. When the motor stopped running and I knew I had gassed up prior to taking it out, I assumed that it had quit because it was out of oil which had happened one time last summer. Since I had not added oil this season, I made that assumption. The little glass guage is so difficult to read, I never saw any line showing that there was oil in it. When I opened the oil access port, there was no sign of any oil so I proceeded to fill it. It drank it up and I kept pouring. Once done, the motor started right back up and ran for a brief period before it began to pour smoke out and then it did quit and we were unable to get it cranked back up. Since I've been back home, I put it in the fresh water tank I have for running it and it started and ran for about a half hour without problem. Still, if it is burning oil and shouldn't I will take it in for a service at the Honda repair place here. Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617)

Hi Rick, I keep my spare fuel in used oil containers that I get at our Transfer Station. That way you can pick the color of the container. Mine are red for easy recognition. If you plan on trips were you will operate the motor for longer periods of time, which requires en route refueling, then the easy way is to use an outboard fuel hose with bulb pump. One end of the hose goes into the gallon - or larger - fuel tank opening with the fuel tank in the cockpit. The other end goes in the filler opening of the outboard. Now you just squeeze the bulb and can carefully control the amount of fuel you put in the tank. No spilling; no trying to hold a gallon tank and pour into the outboard fuel tank. It's easy, simple; no strain; and environmentally friendly - no spilling! Connie

Sorry, Steve, I did not get your message until this morning. I was out of town for several days. Yes, I am on the list and lurking around for a year or so trying to soak up as much information as I can from all good salty sailors of Montgomery boat. I searched but failed to find any active Montgomery group in so. Ca. I joined S. California Potter's Group in May so that I can learn from its old-salt sailors and beef up my confidence. This Potter group has an active yearly schedule that includes day-sailing and couple of coastal adventures to outlying islands. I tagged along Potter's June adventure to Catalina Island to self-test my sailing skill outside the protective Long Beach Harbor for the 1st time and to check if I would get sea sick on a long trip. Both tests, to my surprise, went along quick smoothly. Following is some recap of the Catalina trip. Trip day one: Launched and departed at the Alamitos Bay/ Long Beach at 6:00am. Except the father/son team from Utah, we were all single-handling. We motored half way to Catalina and motor-sailed the rest of the trip. Due to balky motor that plagued some of the skippers (total nine boats participated) for the whole trip and steady head wind during the second half of the trip, this trip not only took 2 hours longer than the expected 6 hours passage but also forced a change of destination. Instead of the targeted Catalina Harbor on the south side of the island, all but two of us headed for the Two Harbor/ Isthmus Cove on the north side. Other than the mishap of the motors, the outward trip was uneventful until we came across a huge tanker in the shipping lane unmercifully claiming her right of way. The wake waves generated by the long-gone tanker were quite a shocker to a novice sailor like me. The approaching wake wave looked more like a small tsunami with sporadic breaking white cap on top. Every Potter skippers changed their course and headed into the wave at a slight angle. I followed suit and, while crossing the wave crest, felt my M-15 airborne for more than a split second and landed with a big solid splash behind the wave. What a thrill! After mooring at Two Harbor, everyone brought out their inflatable dingy/kayak and went on shore for a hearty sunset barbecue. Speaking about inflatable, do not waste your money on those cheap toys. Some of us learned a good lesson from using them. Trip day two: we had a lunch gathering and exchanged ideas/experiences and other heated issues on our living planet. After the lunch, I walked across the narrow flat land connecting Catalina Harbor/Two Harbor to see the other side that I had never seen. The scenery are quite nice especially when I reached the higher land overlooking the entire harbor and the Pacific ocean. I finished the rest of the day enjoying kayaking, swimming, on-shore shower, and on-boat cooked noodle. I slept the second night with continuous dreaming of a gentle rock-n-roll. Trip day three: After breakfast, I paddle ashore to deflate my kayak and summoned a water taxi to take me back to M-15. We departed around 9:30am. One of our potter-15 failed to get motor running and was towed by a fellow potter-19. Again, we motored-sailed halfway and then quit motor and wind-wind all the way back to Alamitos by 4:00pm. On the way, I try to rig main/jib sheet for autopilot without success. During some point, I even experienced an accidental jibe that surely shook me up. To summarize: the trip was successful and very much enjoyable. Distance traveled was 36 miles to and 31 miles from, according to GPS. Peak wind speed was estimated between 10-15 knots. No worry necessary for the ebb and flow of tide. Another sailing adventure

Hi all, I spent the week before the 4th in St. Petersburg, FL, took the Seawitch and my daughter and 3 grandkids for a vacation and to get in some sailing. Typical of FL at this time of year, it was hot, humid and we experienced daily thunder and rain storms. And as usual, we had our little adventures, aka learning opportunities. With the winds being light and usually dying by mid day, we started our days with a sail. Winds usually south west at about 5k. This was good, as the location of the marina where I had the boat was on the west side of tampa bay, and that allowed us to get a nice sail once away from the headlands. Having learned from previous experience to fill the gas tank on the motor before leaving the dock, that has become routine. So, when the winds died, and we were motoring back I was somewhat suprised when the motor died but no problem, I had the oil and a funnel aboard. And with the water flat, and another adult on board to keep us heading in the right direction, I managed to fill the oil. Got the engine started again, and moving along nicely when it started to smoke and quit. Now we're in the channel with the marina in sight but no wind, and the tide is pushing us towards the rocks on the side of the channel. Kids are miserable and we are baking. So, I did the unthinkable and called for a tow. Thanks to a membership in BoatUS, that did not cost me an arm and a leg but it did cause me major embarassment. Next day, after leaving the motor sit overnight and calling around to see if we could get it serviced on short notice and talking to service guys, we went out and after a lot of attempts were finally able to get it started and ran it for over an hour. Yes, I had overfilled the oil, and with the way the guage is on the Honda, it is very difficult to read the level, expecially in bright light and with old eyes. One of the marina live aboards stopped by to comment on the unheard of towing in of a sailboat, and our oil stream in the water. Very demoralizing. However, he later came by asking to take my little M15 for a sail, so of course I took him out. He was a past sailing instructor, and lives on a 40 foot boat. So for him this was a different and fun sail. What I learned from this experience I pass on to any other Honda 4stroke owners. Since the motor only holds 8 oz. of oil, and the difficulty of filling it in the water, I went out to a store that sells beauty supplies to hair salons and purchased these little plastic bottles which have funnel shaped tops with snap on lids they hold 4oz. and will eliminate the need for carrying a funnell and for carrying the oil container. I am sure that one would rarely ever need to put in a full 8 oz. so with these small containers, maybe I would not overfill again. I also, learned that I don't want to sail in FL in the summer again, and if I did, I would find a launch ramp which would give closer access to the Gulf side which is where we found the winds to be better. We did have some good experiences in that dolphins played around the boat on several occasions, the kids loved that. The marina we had the boat in has a nice pool where the kids could swim while I tinkered with the boat. All great learning experiences. Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617)
