Hi Connie: Honda motors are fidgety travelers. Others have reported they leap off boats to take a quick swim. My motor seems to grow restless on long trips, and apparently shifts to a more comfortable position. I have found oil running from the lower unit and experienced a cloud of black smoke upon starting. steve Steve R. Shhhh! The Great Lakes are probably the best kept open secret in the world. To me, it looks as if the M-boats were built for Michigan; I wonder if Lyle Hess ever had the opportunity to sail here? The big blue looks kinda' scary from the Midwest, at times... California to Hawaii in an M-15???? That's a bit more adventuresome than I am, but don't anyone tempt me. By the way, a good friend of mine has the copyright for the "Say ya to the UP, eh" slogan from about 1980 (a variation on the "Say yes! To Michigan" ad campaign) . He hasn't worked on anything but his hobbies in 20 years! All it takes is a good (??) idea! Take care, Dave

Hi Steve / Sandra The 2 HP HONDA can only be laid down on one side. There are warnings about that in the Owner's Handbook. I don't know what happens if the motor is laid down on the "wrong" side - oil leaking out through a breather perhaps....? My motor always lies on it's proper side during the winter or in the boat being transported from A to B, and I've never lost oil, nor had to add any oil during a sailing season. Check your Handbooks for the proper way to do it. Connie

Hi Sandra, I hope you didn't really put oil in the Honda outboard fuel tank. The lubricating oil is in the closed crankcase, and most likely that doesn't need filling or attention for a whole season. The ONLY thing you put in the fuel tank of a 4 cycle HONDA outboard is clean gasoline - not a drop of oil! A Honda engine is a four cycle engine. The lubricating oil for the engine is in the closed crankcase. The engine only requires gasoline to operate. No gasoline / oil mixture. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A two cycle outboard engine is different. It requires a mixture of gasoline and oil - the usual ratio is about 50:1 - and this fuel/oil mixture is what goes in the fuel tank. The oil is mixed with the gasoline which then provides the necessary lubrication for the two cycle engine. Happy sailing Connie

Has anyone installed an electric trolling motor on their Monty? If so, what HP & size boat. Any consideration towards using a solar panel for recharging? I'd like to eliminate the danger & smell of the fuel, as well as enforce a zone of silence about me. ;-)

Hi There Listers, Well, I'mn on the verge of bringing my neglected M17 #92 out of storage and one item I would like to add is a topping lift. I presently have a short lanyard off the aft stay which is fine for keeping the boom supported when flaking the main, but after getting used to the rigid vang on the M23, I would like the flexibility of a true topping lift, especially when it's time to reef. What do all you other 17 owners use for a block at the top of the mast? Do you also simply add another cleat at the base of the mast for adjustment? Your input is greatly appreciated. Fuh-Shing Pan: Thanks for the report. You are lucky to have such a great area to sail. I suspect other Montgomery sailors will join you now that they know where you are located. By the way, you have a beautiful boat. (Ours has the narrow blue stripe as well.) Sandra: It is difficult for me to check the oil in my Honda. The glass port is hard to use. Your comment about the eight ounces of oil gave me an idea. I too have lost oil when the motor shifted from the postion recommended in the manual. When I take a trip in the future I may drain the oil before I leave, and fill it with a pre-measured eight ounce supply before I start it up.
