Hello: After having lurked on this board for two years I guess it's high time I say hi. Hi. And thanks for all the great advice on boats. I am so happy with our M-15. We are having a great time. We bought it last July, 11 months ago. This sailing thing sure is complicated though. My next job is figuring out how to reef that mainsail. I have one set of reefing points, and we sure could have used it 2 weeks ago. I put together a little trip report on one of those free hosting web deals. Inland Northwest Rallys

Hello all, I'm still on a high from the San Juan Rendezvous. It is really a pleasure to sail with other Montgomeries. On that note, I would like to pass along some opportunities for more get-togethers in the north Idaho / eastern Washington area. The Northwest Potters are having a rally on Lake Pend Orelle the weekend of August 20-22nd. There will be a few of us Monty's there and it's always a good time. Jon Martin is planning a group sail on the Columbia River near Walla Walla probably a weekend in September (date yet to be announced), and I'll be up on Priest Lake every weekend from July 10th through Aug. 9th, including the full week of July 24th to 31st. It would be a blast if anyone wanted to join me. Contact me if you're interested and we'll set something up. (We had a rally up at Priest a couple years ago. More San Juan trip report

The San Juan Rendezvous was too good of a trip to let it slip into the past without more stories being told, so, since no one else is writing (hint, hint) I'll post "page 2". We had a group dinner in Anacortes on Saturday night of the opening weekend. Sort of a "lets get acquainted" event. Introductions were given. Fellow restaurant patrons seemed amused at our names.... Dinky Boat, Sea Cutter, Tullamore, Swoose, Faith, Sweet Pea .... As an ice-breaker (which this group, ahem, didn't need...) "awards" were presented for various distinctions. The Most Experienced Skipper award went to Charless Fawlkes for, I believe, something like 40 years of sailing. Since this experience only comes with age, and since age brings, um, other things, he was "awarded" a jar of dietary fiber. The Least Experienced Skipper award went to, egads, the trip leader?! I presented myself a rescue whistle along with instructions to "follow Charless" for having my own sailboat the fewest years in the group. The Oldest Boat award was next. My '76 M17 was oldest, but not wanting to "hog all the hardware", the roll of duct tape was presented to Mark and Roberta for their immaculate M23 Faith. Biggest Crew was next, with several boats having a crew of 2. The symbolic can of sardines went to the Fawlkes in a tie-breaker. (They were in the smallest boat.) And the Owned the Most Sailboats category also went to Charless, with 11 sailboats throughout the years. His wife was presented with a bottle of aspirin. Nest time we'll go to a different restaurant, but a good time was had by all, at least until the walk back to the marina in the pouring rain. <grin> More later, Larry

San Juan Island trip report

The first San Juan Islands Montgomery Rendezvous finished up last weekend and we had a great trip. All the Montgomery models were represented with Mark and Roberta Dvorscak in their immaculate older model M23 Faith, Fred and Lilly Shelly with their brand new M23 Sea Cutter on her shakedown cruise, Charless and Marjorie Fowlkes in their M15 Vagabond, Randy Graves in his M15 Dinky Boat, Jon Martin in his M15, and my M17 Tullamore. Also attending was former M23 owner Dick Lane in his Nonsuch 28 Swoose. Dick and Ann Lang showed up for the weekend rally but were unable to bring their M17 Sweet Pea. The timing for the trip worked out great. The weather was mixed, with some sun, some rain, some wind, and some calms, but the biggest advantage was beating the crowds. We were able to get dock space together every night in areas where you would be hard pressed to find a spot to drop a hook during peak season. We did anchor out one night by choice and were rewarded with a beautiful sunset. Our itinerary worked out just as planned, with time spent at Blakely Island Marina, Spencer Spit on Lopez Island, Blind Bay on Shaw Island, Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Stuart Island Marine State Park, and we even made it up to Sucia Island, the crown jewel of the whole island chain. But maybe the best part of the whole trip was the people. This was a terrific group to sail with and we had a great time getting to know each other. We shared several meals, explored the islands together, and as this was the first time there for most of us, shared the awe and wonder of this beautiful cruising ground. No wonder people all over the world know of the San Juan Islands. The sailing itself was sporadic, seemingly with wind either dead on the nose or shifting all over the compass with periods of calm mixed in, but with enough sailing each day so you didn't feel like you were just motoring through the islands. Probably about a 50/50 mix, which is pretty normal there. It was a real treat to be able to see the M23's side by side. Identical hulls, but very different rigs and cabins. Unfortunately, Sea Cutter wasn't completely rigged yet, and had to sail under main and jury rigged sprit sail only, so she couldn't really show her stuff, but "Thank you" to Fred and Lilly for coming all the way up from Arizona even though they weren't completely ready. At Friday Harbor, we met up with Scott Grometer (M15) who showed us his Flika and even went up Sea Cutters mast to free up the jammed roller furler. It was a unanimous decision among the group that we definitely have to do this again. So, be on the lookout for next years trip and don't miss it. Bill, I finally got around to inspecting the bolt based on that thread. Mine must be bent more than yours. I guess it took 15 or 20 minutes to extact it. New Old M-17

This note is for those of you who have older M-17 boats. We have been working restoring our 1978 M-17 for about a year. I finally got the new traveler installed and her name will be painted on this weekend. I made quite a mess while installing the traveler and wanted the cockpit to be clean when the sign painter came. I closed my hatch-boards, and really gave the cockpit a good hosing and scrubbing. When I was done and opened the hatch-boards I was greeted with about an inch of standing water in the cabin. I pumped the water out as I was cursing my self on not doing a good job with the traveler seal. I was about to remove the traveler and try again when I thought it might be a good idea to see which bolt holes were leaking. I got the hose again and sat down on the cabin floor to get a good look at the dripping bolts. No drips, just a wet butt. It was then I noticed that the water was running from the stern. I was confused as I could still hear the water pouring out of the scupper. I got out, and stuck my finger into the bottom side scupper hole and was shocked when I actually poked it through the wall of the through hull connection. What a blessing, I could have been a mile offshore when the connection gave way. It appears that the connection on my boat is a aluminum tube that was fiber-glassed into the round hull opening. Electrolysis had done its work and the aluminum had all but disintegrated. The hose was still in good shape but the whole inside of the fitting came out with the hose. This is an area that you might want to check out. If I hadn't wanted a new traveler, we might have added a submarine to our website. Bill Sylvester M-17 #279 Endelig

While you're at it Steve, why not enlarge the through-hole for the bolt and install an aluminum sleeve when you reinstall the bolt? This will do a couple things; it will prevent crushing the mast when you tighten up the bolt, and provide greater surface area to bear the stresses of the wires. I suspect it'll help keep the bolt straight too. When I had Jerry build my new shrouds, I made this modification when I put everything back together. The 1/4 inch bolt had elongated the holes over time (like yours) and this mod fixed that. I used 3/8 aluminum tube with a quarter inch i.d. I cut a length to span the mast, then cut it in equal halves to accommodate the forestay. I enlarged the holes in the mast to 3/8, then carefully filed and fit so the sleeve is flush to the mast. The traveler line (will become the continuous loop) runs through the the first block, over the tiller, through the second block, under the tiller and ties off to bitter end. The knot under the tiller can form the attachment point for the control line. Form the attachment point for the mainsheet block directly over the tiller while the attachment point for the control line is directly under the tiller. Attach the control line (and fairleads) and lead it to convenient cleating point. To move the traveler out, ease off the control line, and to move the traveler in you pull the control line in. Hi Doug, There are some sketches of similar small boat travelers here: http://daysailer.org/fleet64/64travelers.htm I may try something like that myself. Also, I checked my bolt that connects the shrouds and backstay to the mast. It was bent 0.2 inches and was a challenge to get out. I may have made a slightly oval opening in the mast. I probably should have cut off the exposed threads with a Dremel tool and abrasive disk. I can not imagine how it was bent so much. At least it gave a little more mast rake... steve Steve R.
