Tongue Weight?

SF Bay is calling me... I've got the No Sailboat Blues! Can someone tell me an average trailer tongue weight on the late model M-15's? I towed the P-15 with a '02 Honda Civic. I guess the M-5 will be 400 pounds more. I'm not concerned to much with the stopping ability or cost of the inevitable, new transmission. But the question I'd like to pose... Is anyone else doing this? Or another little car? Thanks,

Bob and his wife are warm, friendly, generous people. Last year they went to much effort to allow me to see, and even sail on, their M-15 here in the Nashville area while they were traveling. I found their boat very shipshape and, yes, it sailed wonderfully. At the right moment someone pulls the chain: the winds drop down from the cold heights of the Alps, accelerating all the way downhill and hitting the northern Adriatic area. I experience it once in Pula and stood anchor watch all night long (the Danforth held) and the next morning as I hauled it up - in a flat calm, of course, - my wife wanted to kiss it. She suddenly had a totally different feeling for the shape of an anchor and what an anchor represented. In Pula there is a Roman amphitheater - in far better shape than the one in Rome. The whole Adriatic area was a Roman vacation area, and everywhere you go you are treading on the same cobblestone streets used by Roman Legionnaires over 2000 years ago. .........and if you tire of the beauty and solitude in the Yugoslavian islands, you just head West across the Adriatic again for about 40 NM and land at Venice. Good food, good wine; history; great art......... What more could you want? But I'd sure like to sail in your lovely area, .......sigh! Connie

What an eye opener... (long boat test report)

Hi all, Today was my first ever sail in a M-15. Built in 1982, very strong feeling and in great condition. She belongs to Mr. Bob Becker who was kind enough to turn me loose with her and let me get a feel of how she sails. Some may recall a couple of weeks back when I mentioned I had sold my WWP-15 because I didn't feel safe with me being the moveable ballast. What a difference. I was told to be ready for a completely different feel and everyone sure was right. We did not get into any real boat testing San Francisco Bay winds, but, we did have an 80 degree day with westerly winds from 5 to 15 knots. Flying her Genoa we managed 5 plus knots and I got the chance to practice and experience her abilities in the light air. Here are my observations from today: **She felt like a much larger boat. Even sitting still I was quite comfortable wandering around on her decks. I did manage to get the toe rail within a maybe 6" of the water but with just a nudge, she popped back onto her feet. **She sails as close to the wind as most any boat I've sailed. Much closer than my old P-15 and possibly not quite as close as my old Catalina 22 with fin keel. However, she felt solid and responsive on all points of sail. I especially like the ability to raise the keel to gain a little speed on runs. And still stable **Pointing was like being on tracks. I am used to tacking and falling off a little to regain momentum and then pinching again to get closer to the wind. It seemed I didn't loose much speed (momentum) when tacking with the M-15. This may be a bit subjective, but it felt very good. **What a nice cabin. Bob suggested his idea of camping is a Holiday Inn. I'm a backpacking fly fisher (referred to as a fishpacker) so, the cabin is wonderful for me. I'm impressed that the is no mast support. I tried one time to sleep in the P-15. It was fitful to say the least. Bob wouldn't let me take his boat home with me so I didn't test the cabin by sleeping. But, I sure like the size and the porta potty area. How convenient. There is no possibility of using one in the cabin of my old P-15. The Honda 2 HP, same as what I had on my old P-15 seemed to push the M-15 better with less strain. I'd like to get a P-15 side by side to an M-15 and do a bit of motor testing. I've sailed out of Richmond, CA lots. For some reason I've never seen an M-15 there. Today, before Bob arrived, I spoke with the owner of (M-15) Q2. She is out of Sacramento, CA and has lots of personal upgrades to make single handing easier. Anyway folks, I'm impressed! What a wonderful, transportable, easy to rig and most of all safe and functional boat. My next challenge is to find an Excellent one -- or call MB to see about an order. For those of you who think you've got the best boat available... I agree! WHAT A GREAT DAY

Hi Craig, I built a cockpit (companionway) table for my M15. The original design was in one of the last published Montgomery News Letters. The table fits over the lowest hatch board; has fiddles; and with the folded holding mechanism, is easy to stow. The pieces that hold it in place on the hatch board are hinged so that they fold flat when not in use. My only modification to the original design was to center the table over the hatch board so that non symmetrical table loads wouldn't put too much strain on the holding device. So far it has worked very nicely; no design changes needed nor would any be suggested. If you want more details, I could give you the dimensions I used; how I made it; and even could send you a copy of my folding device so that you would have the right angles (remember the hatch boards do not go in place at a 90 degree angle..........!) Hi George, I have installed hasps on my M15 sail lockers. Reasons: Part of the season my boat is at a local lake at a marina and I keep the boat locked with three identical padlocks: one for the companionway, and one each for the sail lockers. Therefore I only have to carry one key. I installed the hasps so that they stay firmly in place unless I open them. Therefore no barking shins on hasps that are hanging in the breeze when heeled. I sail mostly by myself. I want instant access to things in the sail lockers: boat hooks; anchor; seat cushions; outboard fuel; etc., which my system allows, while still keeping the sail locker lids firmly shut at all other times. Going below to unlatch my sail lockers is not a good method of operation. The trick here is to make the hasps fit tightly enough that they will stay in place until you exert force to unlatch them. Then you have the best of both worlds: security and instant access. Connie M15 #400

Hi Rusty, No reason to sigh, you'll have may fine adventures with your PS F20. I looked very closely at Flickas but they were too small for my 6'2" stature. Hello all! I have my own version of keeping the cockpit lids down on my M15 but not locked. I used the 3M Dual Lock Clear 1 inch wide at the front of the lids and believe me they are both strong in adhesive and grip! I felt that in a knock down that I would lose all of my goodies from the cockpit lockers, some of which is emergency equipment, so I felt I had to do something. I also used closed cell weather stripping with adhesive on one side, for the perimeter of each locker. I used Acetone to clean all the gel coat before sticking them on. I also had to experiment with the width and thickness of the weather stripping and the width/length of the Dual Lock (this is way beyond are father's Velcro). I thought that the idea of the line to the cabin to keep the cockpit lids locked was neat and I will give it more thought to see if it will work for me. If anyone has any advice or questions please email me at pwdeffen(a)easystreet.com Peter Peanut M15 #618 Hi all, I saw a nifty method for securing the cockpit lockers on an '89 M-15 that was for sale at a local boatyard a while back. It consisted of small eyes bolted to the underside of the locker lids with small lines led forward to clam cleats affixed to the interior side of the cabin on either side where they can easily be reached from the cockpit. A small hole for the line had to be drilled in the shallow starboard locker. I've been told this is a standard feature on Macgregor boats, but it still might be a good idea. No barked shins from hasps sticking out and no extra locks needed since locking the hatch boards secures everything. What I didn't learn was how the cleats inside the boat were attached. I don't want to drill holes in the boat so I'm thinking of using 5200 or epoxy to attach some small teak blocks to the cabin sides, into which I can screw the clam cleats. Likewise, a strip of teak glued to the interior below the cockpit opening would allow attachment of storage pockets without having to drill through the glass and so on (my last boat had a cabin liner, so screwing stuff in was no problem). Has anyone else used this method of securing the lockers? I'm also wondering how others have dealt with attaching stuff inside their cabins? Is 5200 a good choice or should I be going with epoxy?
