Wayne, I have the 17 and I keep her in the water 6 months a year, it makes it so much easier. There have been no problems whatsoever with this arrangement. We rode out the hurricane last year and came thru without a scratch and we had wind at 65- 70 and 3 footers in the creek where the marina is located. Just took off the canvas and added an additional line and that was it. Never had a blister problem only some sun damage to the hatchboards and the need to clean the teak. If its just 2 sailing the 15 is a good choice but if you want 4 people for a daysail you will want the 17. The cockpit on the 17 is outstanding and very comfortable and the cabin will provide sitting headroom for 2. Both are great sailing boats, I'm partial to the 17 but if your leaving her in the water it might be the better option. Good luck with your search, you will definitely enjoy either one. Gary

Not 100% relevant, but..... One day last summer I was chugging out through the channel from Deale towards the Bay when I noticed a cigarette boat idling in. Not unusual in high summer, but two things struck me: It really was idling in (without wash -- they often come in just off the plane making maximum wake) and there was a significant heat haze shimmering over it. As it passed by, I noticed large vertical exhaust stacks, very little noise and prominent warning signs with "Danger: Jet blast" on them. Yep, it was powered by gas turbine(s). The interesting thing was to realize how different it seemed without that obnoxious "thunderboat" sound that pervades so many summer weekend afternoons. Will we be able to enjoy fuel cell-powered boats in my lifetime, I wonder? The ice is gone in Deale, and the promise of spring is in the air. I resolve to enjoy this summer. Hi Craig, I too learned to curse at Cigarette boats, but then in a moment of sundown introspection, sitting in the cockpit with Martini in hand I thought, what the Cigarette boat owners need is a proper challenge so that they can demonstrate their manhood, and impress their bikini clad girlfriends. I propose an annual race for Cigarette boats. The course is laid out in a figure eight over a solid rock ledge that is just awash at low tide in the middle of the course. The race is scheduled on a falling tide. Boats start at one minute intervals. Cigarette owners race for the enjoyment of the spectators, and to prove what heros they are to each other. There will be crashes and eventually, as the tide keeps falling, bottoms get ripped out of boats as they cross the rock ledge, and they sink. The last cigarette still afloat is the winner. He gets to wear another gold chain and sport another Lolita in a bikini on his foredeck. The beauty of my suggestion is: It allows the cigarette owners to prove how macho they are. It removes the majority of cigarette boats from circulation until the loosing owners buy new ones. New boat building helps the economy Next year we do it again. Meanwhile, sailors will enjoy peace and quiet. Does anyone want to contribute to the Cigarette Race prize fund? Connie

stern rail measurements - Defender Sales

thanks I found the Defender listing for the stern rails. but does any one have the measurements for either the M15 or the M17 for comparison. like height, width, the weight, metal thickness, center to center for bolting down and whether its round or square plates that are used

These are rough measurements because the tubing moves a bit when not installed. Best to check things like stanchion spacing to be sure it won't hit fittings on your boat. Probably need to add access ports to bolt stanchion sockets on. Would measuring the installation holes in the hull improve accuracy? Steve Tyree, P-15

M-15 sail markings

Rudder Refinishing

Alright, I have the rudder and tiller on my M17 sanded down to bare wood. Have read the threads on refinishing, but have not seen anyone talk about using stain and varnish to any extent. Will a stain and two or three coats of varnish survive below the waterline on a slipped M17 that has the rudder placed in the cabin when not sailing? I see a lot of warnings on various varnishs about "not for use below the waterline." Does this mean any time or for extended exposure to water? Any inputs on varnish and stain would be helpful.
