The Folkboat is the wettest 26-footer I've ever sailed, swept with spray and decks running green as soon as it gets over 15kts. You really pay for that low freeboard. The tall dodger and "weather cloths"---I think "lee cloths" are what keep you in your berth on passage?---have almost completely solved the problem. They also do an amazing job of protecting the helmsman from wind, helpful when it's 50 degrees. The only problem is that, together with the Monitor and the wind generator, all that canvas makes Chimpanzee look HARDCORE and in every anchorage someone asks if I've just popped in from Bermuda. Maybe someday I'll be able to say "yes." In the meantime, sewing that dodger and the weather cloths on a $12 sewing machine will have to rank as the season's singular adventure. can not be seen on small radar

Friend of mine was sailing hard to get to shore before dark, did not quite make it, and was running to reach the ramp when he was run up on to from behind by a power boat, apart from a few scratches and a lot of rough words no one was hurt. The power boat said it was level and running blind except for the radar. Heavy overcast, no moon. He said the radar did not detect the small sail boat.If it had the alarm would have gone off. It tested fine after the event. EVEN with the long aluminum mast up 20 some odd feet. Apart from the obvious please, like should not be there, carry a radar reflector, etc. If he was to glue an aluminum foil strip say 3 inches by 10 inches on the sail near the peak, would that square inches of flat surface be enough to change the odds of being seen, the round mast apparently was not enough surface area. I don't know what frequency the radar was on (what band) its the small LCD type, and don't know which band can see the smaller area on a flat plane, again apart from the obvious, wave height, angle of radar to level of water, speed, etc.. The reason I suggested the 3 by 10 inches size is I believe that was the size used to confuse the anti aircraft artillery when night flying over Germany. It didn't look much larger than that.

Mantis Shade by Pro-Techt

Someone posted about this product on the Trailer Sailor board. Basically there is a vertical shaft that supports an overhead horizontal shaft. (The shafts are called spines.) A shade folds out from the overhead spine. The shade looks like a cross between a bat and half an umbrella. When opened, it is 54 inches wide by 34 inches deep. It provides enough shade for a seated individual. It was originally made as a fishing accessory. With two shades on an M-15, you could have one up and fold the other to prevent interference with the boom or main sheet. Can be removed and used elsewhere, like over a lawn chair on the back of a garden tractor. On the minus side: Costly. $120 to $180 each. Plus $30+ for each mounting base. I am not sure where or how to mount it on a M-15. A bigger boat might have a hand rail or rod holder available. No such luck here. Tod has mentioned using a golf umbrella. Which would provide shade and cost a lot less. The only drawback is you have to hold the umbrella. Does anyone have a clever idea for an adjustable golf umbrella mount? Or know of a suitable shade product?

I seem to recall seeing a very early M17 with the hull mounted nav lights. Or, perhaps these were installed by the particular owner. I noticed the Sailnet disclaimer "does not meet international standards". A fellow M17 sailor here in Minnesota got stopped by the water police on busy Lake Minnetonka one evening after sundown because they could not see his bow nav lights.
