Hi Doug, Back - many years ago - pre WWII, when I worked at Kollsman Instrument Company, our aircraft compasses were filled with a highly refined kerosene. I also recall US Navy compasses (and lifeboat compasses) at that time were filled with ethyl alcohol, which troops discovered, and used inappropriately................... My guess is that a compass should stand a -10 degree temperature, but why not call the compass manufacturer and find out what he fills the compass with (fluid specs) and if it can stand such a temperature. Otherwise, if you don't want to go to this effort, just remove it and store it in the house during the winter. Connie

Bones, I know about the shallow water alright - touched bottom a couple of times when I was down there on my big trip. That's why I'm planning to cruise on the outside -the Hawk Channel) and STILL be very careful. And I do associate sailing with warmth, hence the early May dates. It would be great if you could get away and join us! In any case, stay warm and over-winter well. John

It's the original 1971 Origo stove. One of the cannisters burns clean and there's absolutely no odor; the other will run you out. I'm not sure what does it but I'm going to look around for replacement cannisters. I'd replace the whole thing but the stove folds away on a tricky shelf; very Ikea. There's no place to put a retrofit gas stove. Anyway, the nonpressurized alcohol systems are really safe.

Winter Cruise, Anyone?

I wandered out for an overnight aboard Chimpanzee yesterday. There wasn't a boat to be seen in Eastern Bay today and I wonder if I'm the only nutter who overnights in the Maryland winter. The Montgomeries being as dry as they are, they seem like pretty good frostbiters. You'll want good foul weather gear and some neoprene gloves from a kayak store. Otherwise, the only worry is heavy condensation below, something I solved in the M-15 with a headliner velcro'ed-in-place . (John Tyner: the peel-and-stick velcro didn't stay stuck after a few months, which is why it's no longer there.) Anyway, it was perfectly pleasant aboard the Folkboat; 50's during the day, 15kts of wind. I had about four layers on. It was in the 20's overnight. I put a small flowerpot upside down over one of the Origo stove burners---something I read about on the internet---and that kept the cabin in the fifties, even with two hatches cracked for ventilation. If you use a foam backed material, make sure it is "closed cell", which doesn't absorb water or you'll have a giant sponge glued in your cabin. Sailrite would know that, I'm sure, but you might want to double check. Yes, folks, yet ANOTHER option for sailing your Montgomery next summer! I'm planning on a two week cruise along the Maine coast in the area approximately from Rockland to Mount Desert Island late next summer, leaving home Saturday August 27th, returning home Sunday September 11th, and am hereby inviting anyone who would like to join in the fun. This is some of the finest cruising to be had, in the opinion of many, and the area has a lot of pretty well sheltered water with a couple of more open stretches with a few miles to cross. The largest waves I encountered on my last trip were only about 3' in 25 kts of wind on Penobscot Bay one day, except for the night I sailed out into the Gulf of Maine, offshore, something we needn't do unless we want to. Most of the time it was pretty calm with waves less than 1'. One day there was a big front that came through where it was quite windy (50 kts) but I had several days notice that it was coming and spent that day in a cozy little anchorage quite safe and secure. I've added a web page (at the expense of my Tartan pics) with some pics of charts of the area to fuel your imagination. Also, the story of my '02 trip is still up with lots of pics of the area. At this point, the itinerary is pretty open and as with the Chesapeake Bay Cruises there is a great deal of flexibility as to where we launch and sail. If we have a foul weather day, we can spend it on the hook if we wish. I've chosen late summer because the incidence of fog seems to be the lowest at that time, and the anchorages should have a bit more room in them than in July or early August. Last time, I had absolutely *fabulous* weather, with only one day fogged in. Perhaps on this trip we could raft up one evening or find a good spot on an island for a pot-luck or "shore dinner" with corn-on-the-cob, lobster, mussels, cole slaw, etc. Expect to see a variety of sea life including probably porpoises, starfish, mussels (which can be collected free from the more remote islands for delicious eating), lots of sea birds, and a whole bunch of gorgeous boats. Most, if not all, nights will be spent at anchor or perhaps on a mooring. The tides are high so docks are few and far between and in many harbors are only intended for dinghy tie-up. The generally acknowledged definitive guide to this area is Taft and Rindlaub's "A Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast". There is another, smaller book by the same folks that is intended for trailer sailors. I intend to purchase that for comparison. I expect it covers information about ramps and perhaps omits some info about some of the more "offshore" destinations; we'll see. If you aren't interested in sailing for the whole time, there are TONS of shore side attractions including Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island to make the trip worthwhile. She's a home built from plans and looks very nice. Lots of cool links on that one. OKAY GUYS & GALS... now is the time to think of what you want for Christmas. Just an observation. Miss T came with the on-deck nav lights and I was always concerned that when I dropped the jib, the lights were obscured. I keep Miss T sail on a lake when not travelling and do a fair amount of night sailing. The lake also has a lot of night bass fishing - those boats go like scaulded dogs between fishing spots - so I put nav lights at the top of the mast. This worked well while sailing but was illegal while motoring - the rule requires a white light above the nav lights while motoring. So I put a "steaming light" on the mast and nav lights on the bow pulpit. I take the masthead lights down for racing. A little bit of over kill but I like having the masthead lights, they can be seen a long ways. John Edwards

Rachel, I like the idea of using the bow pulpit. My pulpit has an anchor holding bracket which I haven't used and plan to remove, because the foredeck of the M15 doesn't seem stable enough deploy an anchor especially when you have to carry the rode and chain forward, attach it and then deploy it. The cockpit seems to be a much better place to do this. What brand of lights did you use? Where did you mount the steaming light and the stern light?
