Hi Bones, Does this mean we're trying to fix something that isn't broke? Right up my alley. I've fixed lots of things that didn't need fixing. Seems to keep me busy too. Bill What a beautiful day in San Francisco. Yea, I worked... so I got to see the city during my deliveries. Sunshine all day with I'll guess a steady 12-15 knot breeze. LOTS of sailboats on the Bay. Very distracting when you're supposed to be working. Postcard kinda day. Very pretty out. How cool.

Hi Listers, The centerboard hole will squirt some water when in a chop on my M17. Then I had my pendant replaced at Hooper's, they added a small fairlead plate on the top of the centerboard trunk. It is a flat plate held on by two screws and the pendant passes through a metal ring insert. Great idea, the ring provides anti-chafe protection, and it limits the hole size. On the mighty M23, water REALLY shoots out the trunk winch when in rough seas, I stuff a sponge in the winch window. Can't say if this of any help... When I looked at Alina (M-17) there was a knot in the CB rope. The there was a good amount of sail tape wrapped around in a taper in the end that goes into the hole. When I asked about it, Bob Campbell told me there was two purposes. First, the knot made it so the board would not quite bottom out and would keep the pressure off the cb stop pin and second, the sail tape was shaped (tapered) so as to act as a stopper in the hole to keep water out. Bil, I had the same problem with my M17. When I bought the boat (used) the swing keel had a rope pennant which had a knot in it. Then in a "Tool Time" burst of wisdom, I decided to replace the rope with wire and in the process, enlarged the hole. That was when I found out just what the knot was there for and also got a very wet appreciation about how much water can get onboard with only one little squirt per wave. The solution was to make that pennant hole as small as possible and then make sure it is pulgged with something. I use a chunk of closed cell foam that fits around the wire and works well.....well, it did until I had to replace the winch, but that's another story. John Edwards

Craig et al., Yep - it's the one with the offset centerboard (to port). That really makes the cabin nice for camping. I don't notice a performance difference on different tacks due to the centerboard, but I'm a fairly green sailor. I like the short stub keel for getting it on the trailer and for beaching when we camp on the Mississippi. I suspect the M17 is considerably faster and better to weather - which is why I'm interested in them. My boat is Anduin - pictures of her are at www.widgetsailor.com if you go down and click on Anduin. I do have one 'speed' experience - take it for what it's worth! Our sailing club has one overnight race each year down to a campground on the Mississippi River. We race down (with current) on Saturday, camp, and sail back (if possible) on Sunday. This year, the Saturday race was 15 miles directly against a fairly strong wind. We couldn't point as well as a Catalina22 and an Oday222 that we started with so spent most of our day tacking without making a lot of headway. We eventually gave up with about 5 miles to go and motored the rest of the way. We would have been an hour or more slower than the Catalina. However, on Sunday, we had a strong wind directly against the current so we had a run all the way back. We started about 20 minutes ahead of most of the smaller boat fleet and it took them more than 3/4 of the way back to catch us. That was much more fun! So the only issue I have with the boat is its speed which is probably as much a factor of my ability as the boat. I'm never in a hurry, but when the spring floods come, the current is comparable to our boat speed and thus we often have a hard time going where we want to go while the Catalina and oday are just enough faster that they have much more flexibility on the river. I just saw a photo of the whitehull boat electric motor drive where the drive unit is on the lower part of the rudder. -it is not removable- . My web search brought up nothing of this type of drive who makes it and how big is it?
