yeah but equally i could say 'i wish more artists would shut the fuck up about their relationships. I dont care whether they are gay or straight. I'm tired of entertainers taking my money then giving me no other enlightenment other than that their baby has dumped them', you know what i mean theres room for everything and the more positive debate is raised by these usually useless fools the better. Hi One thing I've noticed about this list, and the KLF in general, is that there doesn't seem to be many people talking about the 'Who Killed The Jams' album. I think its a top class LP and has some extremely interesting tracks. If anyone else on the list knows more about it's origins I would be very interested.

since "who killed the jams" was brought up, I decided to check out what trouser press had to say about the subject (specifically if they had any chart info) I won't go over the corrections that need to be made to the page, except for this specifically related one: "Who Killed the JAMS?....reveals a viciously self-serving and proto-racist outlook in "King Boy's Dream," a short rap delivered over an insane hacking-cough-and-finger-pop percussion track: "I ain't no B-boy/I hate that shit/Those golden chains and Def Jam hype." In other words, it's okay for me to copy the work (both conceptually and literally) of African-Americans, but don't mix me up with that culture." I think the reviewer is WAY off the mark here (besides getting the "shite"/"hype" pseudo-rhyme incorrect) I took those lyrics to mean just about the opposite of racism: what drummond is actually doing is railing against the restrictive nature of the concept of "genre" and image - "in other words", why does pop music require a rapper to be a black, chain-wearing sterotype? a rapper need not even be "authentic", as long as the caricature is does ANYONE agree that the song is "proto-racist"???

hello everyone, i am a new list member unlurking for the first time. let me introduce myself. i am called xe, i am a conceptual and video artist currently living in southern california. starting sometime in the early nineties i was creating ambient environment projects, a pursuit that later folded itself into the local rave culture. after the inevitable burnout period and a rest i went back to my first love video/cinema and that is what i do now. i remember encountering 1987 when it came out in a little record store in the mission district of san francisco. as i imagine many of you were, i was blown away by the strong conceptual basis for thier work as well as the irresistible pop hooks in equal measure and avidly followed jim and bill's activities throughout the years. i have an observation that i'd like to ask you all regarding the recent skirmish about off-topic posting on the list. im hoping to get opinions from both camps. i know its off-topic in and of itself but im really curious. i belong to many lists mostly to do with music, film, and liturature. ive noticed that the literary and cinematic lists seem to have a relatively laissez faire attitude about off-topic posts as long as they started somewhere on-topic, but music lists are, as a rule, very intolerant off off-topic posts. the crux seems to be regarding 'content'. the writer people and the cinematic people seem to accept content as a valid topic for discussion and let it go on for some time within reason, whereas on music lists there seems to be a universal phobia about discussing content. for instance on the j.g. ballard list theres been an endless on/off discussion about class relations for some time now and to my knowledge ballard has never actually said he is writing about class but on the muslimgauze list any discussion about palestine gets its share of rabid instantaneous complaints despite the fact that byrn jones made it explicitly clear that ALL his music was about and inspired by the middle east and the plight of the palestinian people in particular. does anyone have any reasons why they think this is? as annoying as i find these these gigantic 9/11 posts on one level, i can see the relevance to this list in regards to content which, on another level, makes them entirely appropriate. thanks in advance for your ideas, and i do apologize to those that need it for the off topic first post. xe ===== ' the flowers in your hair to air-conditioned air children revoluting to apple computing...' - dr. calculus- __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Does anybody else think it was a bit of chart fixing that got the BEP to No1 in the UK as opposed to actual sales. It just seems like too much of a coincidence that it got to no1 in "2 years on from 911" week (much like when it was fixed so "God Save The Queen" got to no2 in Jubilee '77 week). I also think its a shite song. The problem is its all to do with context. The message of that song is cheapened by the radio friendly hip hop that accompanies it, its a bit like hearing Billy Bragg backed by S Club 7 being played at a school disco. It would have been better if Public Enemy had reformed, got the Bomb Squad in and recorded a 911 song. Chuck would have wrote some thought provoking lyrics, the Bomb Squad would have come up with a "It Takes A Nation.." esque cut up party jam/rock riff musical backing and the video would have been filmed at Ground Zero with quick cutting clips from CNN of Twin Towers and Iraq. At least Chuck would have meant it.
