FOTD 12-02-14 (Prickly Star [A-7,M-5])

FOTD -- February 12, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the oversized parent fractal that results when 5 parts of Z^(0.7) is subtracted from 5 parts of Z^(0.5) and straight C is added. This parent, which is squeezed inside a too-small escape radius, vaguely resembles a violin standing on its side edge, and is filled with features resembling those in today's image. Today's scene lies near the tip of a small filament extending from a large bud on the southern side of the violin. I named the image "Prickly Star" for undisclosed reasons known only to myself. The art and math ratings are both run-of-the-mill because the fractal tricks have been done so many times before. The calculation time of 2 minutes will pass quickly enough once the dark and somber top edge of the image is finished and the 'star' begins to unfold. The purple and gold with green accents in your "The Life Inside" fractal is a great color combination, Albrecht! Its overall shape reminds me of a Greek or Roman plate. The shaded areas and the "confetti-like" areas lend to the air of antiquity the image evokes. FOTD -- February 11, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal shows one of the things that happens when Z^(1.8) is combined with 0.1 part of Z^(18) and straight C is added on each iteration. The parent fractal is a large shapeless open bay with a moth-eaten M-set on its eastern side. This M-set has a main spike that shoots out to the east and curls to the north before terminating in a smaller bay just to its east. Today's scene lies near the point where the spike enters the smaller bay. The name "Island Universe" sounds like more than it means. This name was once applied to remote galaxies far out in the universe, but as far as I can see, it has little to do with today's image. The art rating of a 7 might have been a point or so higher if I had been in a better state of mind when I did the rating. The perfectly average math rating of a 5 shows that much of the impact is gone from the images created by the MandAutoCritInZ formula. As for the calculation time of 2-1/2 minutes, which is right on the borderline of slowness, I leave it to the individual fractal fanatic to make the decision whether to calculate the image or check it on the web sites. FOTD 10-02-14 (A Brot With a Lot [A-9,M-6])

FOTD -- February 10, 2013 (Rating A-9,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image returns us to hyperland, where we check the strange convolutions of a minibrot on the east shore line of the north branch of Seahorse Valley of the classic Mandelbrot set. (To eliminate the convolutions and see the classic scene, change the real(p3) parameter to zero and re-calculate the image.) I have no idea of what's going on inside the minibrots in these types of images, but whatever it is, it certainly makes some interesting scenes. In my opinion, the art aspect fully deserves the rating of 9 that I gave it. The math is still very puzzling, but by this time the puzzle is totally familiar and is no closer to being solved. The math rating of a 6 seems on the mark. The calculation time of 1-2/3 minutes is speedy enough to keep impatient fractal minds from drifting to non-fractal things. MFR12 Easy Start

Jonathan, maybe you have read my posting about a simplified startup in order to create own images, Feb5th. A big improvement in that direction would be a modified z-screen without the explanations but with an extra user accessible line every second line which would make it possible to insert explanations for the inputs. Counting of digits and looking up in the frm source where to find settings is very bothersome and keeps users from trying. Of course this modification would be applicable only within MFR12.
