This fractal is a parallel resistor formula of the following equation: z = 1 / (1 / (z * (cos(z) - 1) - pixel) + 1 / (z ^ 3 + pixel)) The dominant z term is z^3 so it should have 3 way symmetry but this image has a very prominent 6 way symmetry. I zoomed into the center and the 6 way symmetry eventually breaks down and returns to 3 way and ends in a normal z^3 minibrot. The fractal is a deep zoom at a magnification of about 1e21 so I won't post the PAR file. FOTD -- February 19, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-3) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today we return to the first parent fractal I ever saw on a computer screen. It is still probably the richest and most widely explored fractal of all time, a statement backed up by today's image. The math rating of a lowly 3 may at first appear disappointing, but actually it indicates that the formula behind the image is the most widely used and totally familiar fractal formula of all, Z^2+C, the formula that creates the most familiar of all fractals, the Mandelbrot set. The image lies on a filament in the northast outskirts if a tiny minibrot on the X-axis just beyond the large minibrot on the main spike of the M-set. The name "A Mandelbrot Scene" needs no explanation My deep humility prevents me from rating the art aspect at a 9. The actual art rating of an 8 seems much closer to the mark. Regardless, there is easily enough interest in the image to justify the measly 10 seconds required to finish the calculation. HI, ; due to no feedback I dont know is some users have difficulties loading and recalculating the images. They are in 1280/1024 reso which is available on most systems, but if you have 1024/768 or 1600/1200 recalculation is due. I can´t solve a problem I dont know of, so please dont hesitate. I´ve been asked to add parfiles to the links which support that and they can be edited too. ; cheers, Albrecht

FOTD -- February 18, 2014 (Rating A-6,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is not nearly as threatening as its name implies. The "Arc of Destruction" is the arc of evaporation that is advancing from the southeast and has been caught in the process of devouring the central minibrot. The position of the arc is determined by the value of the imag(p3) parameter, which sets the escape radius. Increasing the value moves the arc to the left, devouring more of the minibrot; decreasing it moves the arc to the right, restoring some of the already devoured stuff. The art aspect of the image is worth only an average 6. The math aspect rates an excellent 8. These arcs of evaporation are one of the more interesting fractal things I have yet stumbled upon. Perhaps the best aspect of the image is its fireball calculation time of a mere 20 seconds. The parameter file must first be set up however, but even this may be eliminated by checking the FOTD web sites. So avoid un-needed stress. Jim, In your FOTD for Feb 16th, 2014 I thought that the repeated magenta bands might have been created by carefully repeating short identical runs in the color map. Not so!
