FOTD -- February 06, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
In today's FOTD we take a brief break from the world of
HyperMandelbrot stuff and return to the world of double negative
images. The parent fractal of today's fractal combines Z^(-5.5)
with 3 parts of Z^(-1.5). This parent is little more than a
near shapeless jumble of large bays oriented east-west and
surrounded by a field of smaller disconnected satellite
fractals. Today's scene is located on the shore line of a large
bud on the eastern edge of the easternmost large bay.
The name "The Minor Enigma" has little to do with the image. In
fact, it has little to do with anything, since it came to mind
at lunch time, while I was watching the 'news'.
The art aspect rates a 7, and even this might be a bit too
liberal. The math could be rated no higher than a 6, since the
math trick is over 10 years old.
It's a different story with the calculation time however. The
one minute it takes to finish the calculation on a SOTA machine
can hardly be surpassed other than by checking one of the web
sites.
Calculation may be avoided by viewing the finished image at:

Today dawned mostly clear and cold with a temperature of 9F -13C
here at Fractal Central. The sun prevailed through the rest of
the day, raising the temperature to an afternoon high of 27F
-3C. The fractal cats enjoyed the sun, which despite the cold
is getting higher and stronger every day. The fractal humans
had a bit of a problem digging out the fractal vehicle, but
after a bit of work, freedom was achieved.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. I would bet a week's
income on it. Until then, take care, and biologists tell us
that we have brains. I have no trouble with this. But then
they claim that our conscious selves are by-products of our
brains, and this is where I get confused. It appears to me that
the biologists are claiming that our brains are creating the
by-products that know they have brains creating by-products.
This is circular reasoning if I ever heard it.

This fractal is one I found a few months ago while exploring z^4 parallel
resistor formulas. I have been using it as a test file for the new color
editor I have been working on for Fracton. I finally got enough of the
program working to be able to try it out on this file. The results show
promise and that inspired the name for the fractal as "Promising Blues".
Note: Fracton is off by one color index from the FractInt generated image.
Oh well, more stuff to fix.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image reminds me of a stellar supernova explosion, which
is what I named it. It is a scene on the northwest shore line
of the main bay of a perturbed version of the HyperMandelbrot
set.
This is an area of the Hyper set that until today I have never
checked. And from the nature of the area beyond the border of
today's scene, there might be rich pickings to be found nearby.
In my opinion, both the art and math values of the image rate an
8. And the brief calculation time of 1-1/4 minutes makes the
image an even better bargain. The ultimate in convenience may
be found however on the FOTD web sites, where the finished image
is posted.
The image is posted online at:

About 8 inches or 20cm of heavy wet snow fell overnight here at
Fractal Central, which made for heavy work clearing the fractal
sidewalk. Luckily, FL kept the hot coffee flowing until the job
was done. The rest of the day was cloudy with a temperature of
exactly freezing. The fractal cats noticed the changed appear-
ance of the outside world, but were too busy chasing each other
around the house to give the outside much attention.
The next FOTD will be posted before the sun engulfs the earth,
which will be in something like 6-billion years. (Luckily, it's
not 6-million years.) Until this magic moment arrives, take
care, and science sees man as a body with a conscious mind as a
by-product, yet it is this by-product that observes the body and
invents theories about how the body creates the mind.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a quickie diversion in the environs of a
minibrot on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set, not far from
its tip. The ratings for the image are so low because there is
little to the art and nothing new in the math.
The name "Out on a Limb" refers to the location of the scene.
The calculation time of 2-1/4 minutes is actually quite fast for
an arbitrary precision image, though the quickest way to view
the image is still to check the FOTD web sites at:

The day began with sun here at Fractal Central, but clouds
appeared by 10am and thickened during the rest of the day, until
at sunset it appeared as though the forecast snow and ice storm
was on the FC doorstep. The temperature rose from 1F -17C at
sunrise to an afternoon high of 28F -2C. The fractal cats did
their best to keep warm by chasing each other up and down the
hallway from the kitchen to the living room. Meanwhile, the
humans had other stuff to do.
The next FOTD will be posted soon, most likely in 24 hours.
Until next time, take care, and the vast literature devoted to
'explaining the meaning of life' is a symptom of an underlying
psychological disease. Healthy people do not brood over medical
books.

FOTD -- February 03, 2014 (Rating A-5,M-8)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image lies in the hyper stuff filling an unresolved
filament in the East Valley area of yesterday's image. Its name
is "The Big Break-Up", which does not refer to a failed love
relationship, (sorry ladies) but rather to the two arms at the
center of the image that have broken off from the other four.
The image is actually a two-dimensional slice through the four-
dimensional HyperMandelbrot set. And this 4-D HyperMandelbrot
set is a 4-D slice through its parent eight-dimensional Juli-
brot. I'll make no effort to describe things possible in 8-D
space; It's hard enough to describe things in 4-D space. But
one thing certain is that:
8 lines
28 planes
56 3-spaces
70 4-spaces
56 5-spaces
28 6-spaces
8 7-spaces
pass through every point in 8-D space.
Not surprisingly, this series of numbers appears in Pascal's
Triangle, as do many other interesting number series.
Down to this point, the near circular hyper-holes have had six
broad arms converging toward their centers. But in today's
image, two of these arms, the two on the right, are breaking
away from the main mass, and from here on down there are only
four arms converging on the centers of the holes. Will two more
arms break away somewhere down in the bottomless depths and
leave us with only two converging arms? I have no idea, but the
number of arms remains at four as far as the Fractint program
can take us.
As far as I can see, there is too little art in the image for a
rating above an everyday average 5. The math aspect is far more
interesting however, and rates an 8.
The calculation time of 1-1/3 minutes is fast enough to prevent
impatience, but the task of setting up and running the included
parameter file remains unsolved. The web sites will solve this
situation.
Calculation is really not much fun, so avoid it by checking the
finished image on the web sites at:

<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>

Snow began at daybreak here at Fractal Central today, and
continued at a moderate rate all morning, piling up to about 5
inches or 13cm by the time it ended in the afternoon. The
fractal cats were amused by the falling snow for an hour or so,
then kept themselves busy by chasing each other up and down the
hallway. The humans were in work mode in the morning, but we
shifted to snow-clearing mode in the afternoon.
The next FOTD will be posted shortly. To see how shortly, check
back here at frequent intervals. Until this big fractal event
happens, take care, and when someone claims that matter is the
ultimate reality, I don't mind; and when someone else claims
that mind is the ultimate reality, it doesn't matter.
