What the hell happened to John Lurie?

Hi, I was just listening to "Saints" by Marc Ribot (pretty good album), and when the amazing John Lurie composition came, I suddenly realised how long ago it is since I last heard anything about Lurie. He is one of my favorite composers, and a pretty good saxophone player too. Is Lounge Lizards still active? Anybody seen him recently, or know of upcomming projects?? What was actually his last CD? And was "Men With Sticks" actually worth getting? I checked his webpage, and one of the last news updates was the following: "May 2, 2001. (source: Seth) We are sorry that we have not updated the site recently. John broke his ankle and was unable to get to his computer, and the rest of us in the office are very tired. Doctors feel that John may have to be put to sleep. We will all miss him very much." !??!!!!!!???!?!???!!???!????!???? Who would say that a discussion would be opened for Boban Markovic orchestra. Anyway, i had the opportunity to see this orchestra playing live with the Hungarian violin virtuoso Lajko Felix. You'll never believe what these brass/string instruments are capable of until you see these 2 parties playing together. Also an event to be seen is the festival at Gucha where these gypsy orchestras are performing and competing with each other. Best Nenad

Both of the Bernsteins are the kind of album I can play over and over in different moods and always find something new -- but I"m partial to the new one w/ Sam Rivers. All the horn-quartet stuff on there is magnificent. The Jenny Scheinman I like immensely, too. I wish I had the whole series because everything I've heard so far I've really enjoyed, including the Frank London "Invocations," New Klezmer Trio "Masks & Faces," Nathanson & Coleman "I COuld Have Been a Drum," Bar Kokhba and esp. the Gainsbourg and Bacharach tributes. Oh, and I second the motion on the Blood & Fire label. That's one of those labels I can just buy anything and know I'll like it. Yabby You "Jesus Dread" and "Morwell Unlimited Meet King Tubby's" are particular favorites of mine. Parry

I just moved from the SF Bay Area back to my home town, Colorado Springs, Colorado. I'm pleased to note that there's more good stuff going on than there was 5 years ago, but still, SF it is not. The difference in living here is that I'm more likely to go see shows that I'm kinda lukewarm about; I had to drive about an hour to get to the really good record stores in SF and Berkeley, and I'll have to drive to Boulder or Denver now. I grew up here & so I've been doing mail order to get good records since I could afford stamps, and now I'm getting a business license and starting my own record biz. And Zach's advice - book shows yourself - is dead-on. The South has some really great music of many stripes, and if you're willing to hustle and/or do some driving, you can have more fun than a broke New Yorker, even if your opportunities are fewer and further between. Hi. What's your five favorite Radical Jweish Culture discs? There is so many, and I still haven't really gotten into much of it, and don't really now where to begin. I like Masada, of course. And the David Gould disc is amazing. Really fits the "RJC" label. Very strong Jewish influence, but still something totally new. At elast to me. What about the recent Rabbinical School Dropouts' "Cosmic Tree" and Frank London's "Scientist at Work"? Those look interesting. And oh so many others...
