>ornette coleman... best release.... lets hear it I'd probably have to go with either the classic quartet on 'Shape of Jazz to Come' or just about any of the trio recordings with David Izenzon and Charles Moffet (the 2-volume live in Stockholm is a good starting point). But I also really really like the later 'Body Meta' -- it's the best Prime Time record I've come across. It's electric, but not like any other fusion you'll hear. A similar record that he plays on is 'Tales of Captain Black' by James Blood Ulmer. Excellent shit. That's probably really my favorite now that I think about it. I'll change my mind when I listen to 'Art of the Improvisers' tomorrow. Captain Zappa

Don't rule out the Zappa albums the mighty Captain appears on. Some of those tracks are killer! However the latest Beefheart, Magnetic Hands is not that good. And "Dust sucker" was a bit better. The live sound is poor, but for those of us who have played Beefheart over and over it is refreshing to hear something new. I like the limited Rhino release from My father's place, it contains tracks the original bootleg did not. I also didn't mind the Mats & Morgan "tribute" either. It was recorded after they were asked to put together a band to play Beefheart tunes at one of his art shows. The nearest thing to a live beefheart concert you'll hear these days. I almost got beaten up by two Zappa-heads in a bar last Friday for saying as much. I fully agree that Zappa was a musical powerhouse, but Beefheart beats him hands down as a poet, a crafter of language. He's also a better painter.

I don't understand any of those Zappa over Beefheart issues. It's like apples and oranges. Sure they collaborated, but damn, Beefheart never sounded anything like Joe's Garage or the Yellow Shark. And Beefheart definitely has the art-rock thing cornered comparatively to Zappa. Lick my decals off baby! Certainly my favorite Capt' and the magic band album. My favorite Zappa/Beefheart moment has to be Zappa announcing "Beefheart on soprano sax and madness" from Muffin Man. "Girl you thought he was a man . . ... Check out his fantastic CD of solo drumming "Sticks And Stones". Really great and original. >> I didn't catch the origin of this thread but they didn't come thru San Francisco this year even though I think they played Portland. They were supposed to play last year but cancelled due to 9/11. School Days and Atomic have come thru though and Love was magnificent both times. Atomic was definitely one of the best concerts of the year and the cd definitely kicks butt. Every composition is moving and original with plenty of room for great playing. For some reason, the Love solo cd is bit of a disappointment to me. It wasn't really engaging for me. A few other cds Love appears on that haven't been mentioned are "The Thing" a Gustafsson Trio w/ Haker Flaten as well. Probably the most straight ahead thing that Gustafsson has done, playing mainly Don Cherry tunes. There's some kind words from Eagle Eye inside about the band. Also the Sten Sandell(piano) Trio w/ Berthling on bass on the cd "Standing Wave" on Sofa. Probably one of the more "jazzy" efforts you'll get from Sandell plus no vocals. Love really propels things along and this is worth many repeat listenings. Lastly, Love appears on Christer Bothen Acoustic Ensemble's "7 Pieces" on LJ. I was expecting something more groove oriented given Bothen's past but these are pretty quirky but brilliant compositions where things change constantly and abruptly yet make perfect sense. Very heavily composed, it gives everyone a chance to shine. This is a good week for drummer lovers in the Bay area. Chris Cutler has been here about a week but still has a concert or 2 left, tonight's the 2nd night of 3 for Bobby Previte's Bump, and Tom Rainey is here for 2 nights with Mark Helias Trio with Tony Malaby.
