I just found Zorn mentioned in an interesting article in the German intellectual review MERKUR, August 2002 issue, by Tobias Plebuch, named "Musikhören nach Adorno" (in German). The article provides an extensive comment on musical history, post-modernism, a critique on Adorno from someone who obviously was educated as a believer but now conversed (these are always the worst critics). He is in particual concerning the role of New Music (i.e. serialism and the consequences) today, its original political ambitions and armageddon views, its problems with the listener in general, elitarism, and quality criteria. There's also some Varèse, Cage, Kronos quartet. Interesting (though not new to me since this is already into Musil's aesthetics) is his account of listening as creative act. Who listens has to transform psycho-acoustic pheonomens into a musical imagination, and the latter is exactly what a composer does. The only thing the composer has to do in addition is to somehow get his imaginations out of his mind again, be it in writing it down or in playing it (if he is a jazz musician). Hi, I was thinking about getting the new Filmworks disc "Under The Wing", but was a bit curious how it compares to the other CDs by the string trio. Is there any notable difference? How much to the extra voice and piano guests change the sounds and are Zorn's compositions still up to snuff? yeah, I too just caught Bump at Yoshi's and thought it was excellent. The writing and playing were both superb.....a great balance of elements: groove, freedom, repetition, silence, etc....Ep(isod)ic pieces that really go somewhere, often ending in a totally different place from where they began. Bobby played a great brand new piece called 498 Soul, to be included on the album the band will record next week. and, speaking of Zappa...there is a nice selection on Previte's electronic sampler CD that is reminiscent, at the outset, of "Playground Psychotics"-- an amusing field recording made on tour featuring Bobby's inquiry about a hotel's hot tub.
