Corporatization, gentrification, commodification, cooptation...I'd have to be an expert in sociology, business patterns, world affairs etc. to form a truly informed thesis on what's wrong with America. The only thing I can say in regards to this is that Sacramento, CA is very different New York City. We can't even stop Target, In-N-Out etc sprawling everywhere. It's very disheartening. I was the first generation born here and comparing the two cultures, the American culture is rather isolatory and empty, feels almost like no culture at all, just fleeting pop references to get you to spend money. America may have pockets of thriving arts communities and subcultures but they are usually marginalized and by the time they bubble to the surface, all meaning has been stripped away. The Vietnamese culture is different. While at times restrictive and even oppressive, the customs and tradition have a feeling of bringing people together. Culturally, I am more American than Vietnamese...when people point out the emptiness of American culture, I can't help but agree. John Zorn may or may not be a genius but is it really culture? America is such a fast-moving country, nothing has a chance to really take hold long enough to cultivate into meaningful culture. Even something as universally acknowledged as jazz feels like nothing more than Muzak for commercials, malls, etc. Sorry about the long-winded, non-intellectual rant. It's just how I feel about the matter. David, good to see you picked the locks on the Dungeon of Lurkers. Two questions on the gig -- 1) Boredoms: Instrumental only, or did Eye do some hollerin'? 2) Cale: Solo or with a band? Quack, William NP -- currently having my mind blown by disc 2 of the Burt Bacharach box. Arthur Gadney asked about Boredoms gigs in Europe. (snip) My first time seeing Eye and cohorts. Boredoms

Hi Arthur Gadney asked about Boredoms gigs in Europe. I'm hardly the best person to answer, but... My first time seeing Eye and cohorts. Got the idea it was going to be a variation on a PSF psych-fest and was blown away with the 3 drummers in a circle with our man bouncing around freaking out on a sampler(?). There was nothing amazing by way of extended technique or the like, just going for a groove and being incredibly tight and much interaction as sections broke down and rebuilt amongst the players (sorry no names). I must admit that I probably had a teensy bit too much to drink and I couldn't get my head around the anti-climax that was John Cale's first 4 songs in the second half of the concert. Nothing against the man, but he was added to the show late (no mention on my ticket, but he was there in the ads in the last Wire). I think it would have been better for him to open the evening, unless some idiot thought that Boredoms were a novelty act and we needed a real musician of gravitas afterwards? Random thoughts and I left well before the end of his set, y'see I had Kiss Alive II on the minidisc and an appointment with the devil... Hoping this gets through for a change, yr lurking pal David Howarth

New Publisher?

(Apologies if this is a FAQ) I was told a month or so ago that John Zorn was going to stop using Carl Fischer LLC as his main publisher of scores/parts. I was told this was going to happen about July. Can anyone confirm that this has happened, and, if so, tell me who his new publisher is? I was lucky enough to get this fantastic LP many years ago on a flee market. Highly recommended. Get Back has recently issued another Cherry 2LP set: Blue Lake (BYG 1971). It has Dyani and Temiz (not Tamiz) too and IÂ´ll order it soon... The Believer

Hi, Talking about Radical Jewish Culture and jewish identity, did anybody watch "The Believer"? I saw it recently, and found it excellent. Very intellegent and thought provocation. However, also extremely complex and difficult, and several points I didn't quite get, to be honest. I wonder what Zorn would think about that film. It's sad that there is so few places where we can find out more about Zorn's idead on the whole "RJC" thing. And strange, in a way, I always concidered Zorn to be somewhat of an intellectual but he doesn't seem to like talking and hearing his own voice so much, which is quite unlike most intellectuals I know of.
