Here are my thoughts: PUBLIC IP's: Never seen someone "hack" into a chassis - keep your passwords and snmp info to yourself and I think you'll be fine. PRIVATE IP's: You can do this and you can assign private IP's to your users. I've actually run a chassis behind a cheap Linksys DSL router and it worked awesome. BUT (and this is a BIG "but"), as soon as you do, you'll find you have a whole bunch of users doing things you never thought of that don't work in that arrangement or with any type of NAT and they'll all be mad they don't have live IP's. Hello List: I am trying to setup a 3Com TC Chassis. Since this is my first try & I am the type of person who read, plan & design every thing to death, a million thoughts are going through my mind. So before I go koo-koo, I thought I post the following questions to the list: 1. Public vs Private IP Address (3Com Chassis) ------------------------------------------- Should I assign public or private IP address to the 3Com. I am trying to figure out pro and cons. If I assign public IP address (in my case 12.21.237.X), then it is open to the whole world. Someone may try to HACK it (tell me if it happens). ok ... just an FYI ... I did the following: 1. Created an IP pool for my user with a single ip in it. - add ip pool staticusers iniTIAL_POOL_ADDRESS x.x.x.x size 1 2. Created a local user (ppp) - add user fixedip netWORK_SERVICE ppp password fixedip 3. associated the local user to said IP pool. - add addreSS_POOL user fixedip poOL_NAME staticusers as for the 2nd option ... we use BridgeWater Radius and that system has the capability of associating users to specific ips. The IP block will be assigned out of our portable ip block range and the individual /32's will be specifically routed. Users can connect in Halifax one week and in Vancouver the next and have the same ip address assigned, yet still route locally via the local core network. Hello List: This question is from a small ISP I am trying to help to setup a 3Com TC. Can I get some recommendation on which RADIUS server (LINUX O\S) most (small) ISP are using? Is there any preference between free vs commercial RADIUS servers? Thanks. Kirt
