I too learned to play the drums and saxophone before trying to play guitar. The only real reason that i would say to learn to play acoustic first is that you build more hand strength, which makes the transition to electric much more exciting because you are allowed to do stuff that you couldn't do on an acoustic; however, with your child's age, hand strength might be a problem in general so electric might be the way to go. A friend of mine's younger brother started at about that age and he probably had an easier time with it because he can do a lot with just power chords. Back to learning the drums first: It is much more exciting to learn the drums first, plus your rhythm is developed much better. My roommate and I both play guitar, with guitar being his first instrument, and it being my 3rd. Since i have such a stronger sense of rhythm, i feel that my guitar playing is much stronger, even if he has more actual coordination with the instrument. In my opinion, it's not how far your fingers can spread or how fast you can move them that make you a great guitar player. Like all instruments, it transcends actual coordination into feel and understanding for rhythm and melodies. It might make it easier for your child, but it is not a necessity. The most important thing is to keep practicing.

Since I have only been a Sting fan, in the sense of noticing what he is doing at most times (instead of just listening to his music), for only a few years, I would have to say his highest points to me were The Soul Cages and Mercury Falling(with MF mostly getting me through a really tough personal time) albums. His lowest point: It's a tie between the Super Bowl and his successive Monday Night Football appearances. Ross

...since my goal is to get my kid to play Sting/Police songs! A couple questions for you guitar buffs out there. My 7 year old is dying to play the guitar. He just started lessons with the teacher's Baby Taylor acoustic guitar. I'm not about to shell out $300 for one not knowing if this is just a whim for him. Would it be TERRIBLE for him to learn on an electric guitar? (Of course this is his ultimate goal) My neighbor just lent me a Fender for him to use. If you think it's not a good idea to start that way, what starter guitar would you recommend? We tried one of those $50 kids deals and it was HORRIBLE. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Sorry to use the list for this, hope you don't mind. Please reply privately, I'm sure not everyone is interested in my latest task at hand. Michelle

Sting's new book deal!

Hello all, Sting just signed a book deal with Bantam Dell Publishing group to write his first book (this is what the article says, but we all know that he co-wrote the rainforest book....) due in 2004. The publisher is calling it "narrative non-fiction" and Sting is writing it himself (no ghost writers involved). It does not say how much the deal was for. Bye! Hilary

For anyone who can watch Danish television, channel DR (Danmarks Radio): Sting will be on the TV-show "Musikbutikken" tonight at 19:30 (CET)! He will give an interview and a "mini-concert" according to theirt website http://www.dr.dk/musikbutikken/index.shtml The show usually features interviews and music, and sometimes unplugged renditions of songs. I don't know what this will be like, but get your VCR's ready!
