The Orb Live at Roubaix, la condition publique Saturday 22, 2007
Me and my wife went this week end to the NAME festival in Roubaix, North of France. It's a festival in an old factory with three large stages. The sound was really good in the beginning of the event and there were some fun stuff to do (like strange video games and such...) The Orb did a live set at midnight after a live set by Petter (which was pretty good). I didn't see or recognize Youth, but Fil was there as a roadie, and Tim Bran as his sidekick with the Corpral singing from time to time. I didn't really like this live set. Why ? Because Tim Bran asked to the sound guys to put the volume as up as possible. Some people went away because of that. And it made the tracks almost painful to hear (thank god I had earplugs). The Petter live had a really good sound, The Orb hadn't. Here's the tracklisting (I don't have The Dream yet, but I wasn't impressed by the new unknown tracks). 1. A huge (dance mix) / From a distance 2. Towers of dub 3. New Track 4. Outlands (the new uptempo version) 5. New Track 6. It's Alright (Sterling Void) / Little Fluffy Clouds 7. Little Fluffy Clouds (Danny Tenaglia mix) 8. New cool track 9. Perpetual Dawn 10. Blue Room 11. New track 12. Freebird The tracks 7 and 12 were clearly not live. I might sound like an old guy, but I really miss the magic. The old tracks were not really done well. No flow, no ambient intros. I miss Andy Hughes and the 1996-1997 live sets, when it was really dreamy AND drum n bass AND spacey. I miss OOBE, long versions of Blue Room, Terminus... I hope the next live sets will be better, but I'm not sure I will be there. JC

I must admit that if i want to listen to a nice orb live set, i dig out a recorded one from 92-93 or so. These were lovely and inventive (not just play a 12"single on stage..). I am not critisizing here, cause i know it is not easy to setup something that can be as good as 15 years ago. Times change, bands change, music scene changes... And: budget changes.. gr, R Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2007 11:16:34 +0100From: mariuschan@btopenworld.comTo: orb@mailman.xmission.comSubject: Re: [Orb] The Orb Live at Roubaix, la condition publique Saturday 22, 2007The Orb R.I.P.Jean Christophe DERRIEN <derrien@club-internet.fr> wrote: Me and my wife went this week end to the NAME festival in Roubaix, North of France. It's a festival in an old factory with three large stages. The sound was really good in the beginning of the event and there were some fun stuff to do (like strange video games and such...)The Orb did a live set at midnight after a live set by Petter (which was pretty good).I didn't see or recognize Youth, but Fil was there as a roadie, and Tim Bran as his sidekick with the Corpral singing from time to time.I didn't really like this live set. Not sure about the budget here, they were 4 on stage (I didn't include a guy who had maracas). And that was only my own impression, lots of people seemed to have enjoyed the set, so... jc Le 24 sept. 07 à 12:30, Ramon Vink a écrit :

JC - you're right. For the most part the magic is gone. The Orb's sound has evolved into something else. Although I would be so happy to hear new material follow in line with their earlier music, it appears that era is well over. We still seem to get sprinkles of it here and there but it's tailoring to a different ear now. I can't put my finger on who's ear it's for though.
I am convinced the sound has changed mainly because the samples used in the early days were so difficult to use (copyright) that they don't want to hassle with it anymore in modern Orb tracks. Somebody more insight on this? gr, R Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2007 07:49:21 -0400From: bytesizenun@gmail.comTo: orb@mailman.xmission.comSubject: Re: [Orb] The Orb Live at Roubaix, la condition publique Saturday 22, 2007JC - you're right. I think they are just different people 15 years later with a different view on things (or maybe it's just Lx at the hub with his view on things). The output reflects that. Of all artists, I imagine The Orb would have less hassles sampling legitimately. There's probably a certain street cred that goes with having them sample you. Who knows. Either way - it's a new style, love it or hate it. (In my case - I'm leaning towards the latter, though I still feel this need to continue buying the releases. Hmmmm.) True. I still like some traks of the new Orb material, but i used to love *all* of them at the period ~1990-1996. OKay, music evolves, bands evolve. So never mind.. :-) It is better for a band to evolve and change their style than that they keep on repeating themselves over and over again and become sellouts (we all know the examples). We just have to appreciate the fact they actually continue to release stuff, dont we? Speaking for myself, the new album would be much better as a whole if they eliminated pretty much all of the vocals, both the ones by the Coroner or whatever he's called and the various female vocals. There are a handful of tracks that start out sounding great but quickly degenerate into cheese territory when the vocals kick in. Who asked for vocals? I never even liked the "perpetual dawn, infinite sunrise" vocals on the Perpetual Dawn remixes let alone these. Having said that, the basslines on the new album are fantastic, perhaps the best they've been since U.F.Orb. Is that Youth's input? From the listen I have had so far, I think its a very rounded and beautiful sounding album, which i think will have real longevity unlike cydonia and bikes, and nothing is more cheddery that once more. John Goelzer wrote:

Hey Orbsters - I too have been feeling a bit sad as of late about the evolution of the music. It just doesn't seem to have that certain something that Orb songs always did, at least to my ear. Not sure if that's them moving a new direction, or me staying attached to an old one. Regardless, I'll always give new tunes a try. And even better, a very, very great friend arrived with a special gift for my new apt - one of the Orblivion clocks! Despite any disenchantment with recent Orb tunes, I was nothing short of ecstatic to have one of these! It is truly glorious! =) rach

Its a legit promo that was made by the label, and definitely larger than your average clock. I'll try and snap some pics and post them for anyone interested.

I actually think this is their best album since orblivion. I like some of the vocals, but the extensive use of samples kicks ass. Orbsonia is a fantastic tune....I wish they would write more tunes like this! And definitely some prog rock elements in the opening track and the track with hillage. The only slow point for me is Beautiful Day (which strangely I have had stuck in my head), and the DDD disco song...I can't tell if its tongue in cheek or not. Still, production-wise its a great album, and alot of ear candy on it. Hopefully this will lead to Orbvs Terrarvm II. I mean stylistically, not literally... I too have been feeling a bit sad as of late about the evolution of the music.

[Bbroo Writes] 1) Is there any truth to the rumour that there will be an Orb DJ (or live) session in an amsterdam coffeeshop for all the orb listees who have supported the band with their hard earned cash throughout the years?...."the dream" (is alive) promotional event, maybe...?
NO THERE'S NOT. GREAT IDEA ! WILL ASK MY RECORD LABEL....
...'kashmir coffeeshop', 'twstd nightclub', 'Sugar Factory' or 'Studio 80' would be great locations. THANK YOU FOR THE SUGGESTIONS . 2) Did I hear that LX is a dad again? YES ! TO A BOY & HIS NAME IS TIGER . HE'S NEARLY 11 MONTHS OLD NOW.. 3) Is his daughter into music? Does he find himself influencing what she listens to and does she like the orb? YES MIA IS BEGINNING TO SHOW SIGNS OF MUSICAL INTEREST. GOT HER A KEYBOARD FOR HER BIRTHDAY . SHE LOVES LITTLE FLUFFY CLOUDS ! 4) Is it true that a certain ex-orb member (heavy metal fan) has always been an egotwisted twat or do his deep psychological problems spring from the day he was locked out of the studio? NO COMMENT 5) The day before this, was Alex repeatedly playing a simple sine sine wave when he was told to f*off by this same individual and thus ended his orb involvement? CAN'T BE BOTHERED , HE LEFT 13 YEARS AGO ... STILL THINKS HE'S SOMETHING. 6) Does Alex foresee any future Orb presence in online virtual worlds such as Second Life, etc, or does he think it's a load of crap? BEEN THINKING ABOUT DOING GIGS ALL OVER THE PLACE IN ONE GO , BUT IT'S GOING TO TAKE OFF WITH THE FUTURE. 7) Does he ever use an erbthc vaporizer, if so what is his preferred setting? NO , 8) What would be the cost for the Orb to play at a solar powered Total Eclipse Party on July, 22, 2009 in Nepal or Northeast India? YOU'RE HAVE TO TALK TO THE MANAGEMENT. BUT THAT SOUNDS WONDERFUL. WENT THERE IN 1992 & GOT SOME BRILLIANT SAMPLES IN THE JUNGLES OF NEPAL & NORTHERN INDIA, [Rachel] Could you please ask him about the backwards lyrics at the beginning of Majestic (if they were intentional, etc.)?
NO , BUT INTERESTING ! WAKE UP / FUCK YOU ....
[JC] 1. Does he plan to do more remixes for other artists ?
IF & WHEN THE TIME ARRIVES , IT WOULD BE LOVELY. GOT TF DOING A REMIX OF VUJA DE & A GREAT VIDEO IN THE MAKING WITH MOSHINO IN JAPAN. VERY COOL. AT THE MOMENT WE ARE DOING A PIECE OF MUSIC FOR A FILM ABOUT THE BIG BANG. CO NAMED " COGNIORB ".
2. Will Badorb resurface again via Itunes or something like that ?
NO , SAD NEWS, ROB DEACON PASSED AWAY TWO WEEKS AGO IN A BOATING DISASTER ... NO PLANS ON THAT FRONT.... GOT A 10" COMING OUT IN NOVEMBER CALLED THE " PRESS ONCE " BY NINA WALSH & I , AS THE ROOTMASTERS. ALSO DOING AN ALBUM . . . WORKING WITH DOM BEKEN ( TRANSIT KING & BELKA ) AS HFB & DOING AN ALBUM DUE FOR NEXT YEAR.
3. Why did they cancel their Antwerp concerts this summer ? (sigh) ask the promoters !!! [Brian Kinney] 1 - His thoughts on the state of the music scene.
cut up & eaten up , by the majors , destroying our life styles & having no spirit.
2 - His thoughts on digital distribution vs hard media.
past me now, still 21st century here we go
3 - What's he listening to right now?
the sound of my garden , my cats , jets , and the computer humming.
4 - Where does he see himself in 20 yrs?
hopefully still here & enjoying football, music & my family ( no 1 )
5 - Should we still be expecting an Orb dvd?
leading question, I have a plan ! look out for malicious damage off shoots .....
6 - What's his Xbox Live gamertag? (I'm sure he plays Fifa) sfx snow boarding .... wipe out is the bomb [Anthoney Bryan] this may be a touchy subject, but I'd be curious to know which time period with his former partners (thrash, andy, witchman? are there more?) does he regard as most productive/best, and would he work with them again? (in light of his working with cauty & youth again, & fehlmann as a mainstay). also, who are his favorite one off or part time collaborators? 1/ jimmy Cauty (88-90)--- best time ! 2/ youth (90-92)--- best time as well ! 3/ thrash(92-94 )< : ( : ( sad. 4/ thomas fehlmann (90 to present ) ---- best time. andy hughes(95-99) ---fun times . simon phillips as bass player from 92 / 03 ---- best times. witchman ( 00- 03)------ very dry times ! fil le gonidec ( 82 - present ) ------ still having a laugh. tim bran (05-present) ----- more best times . youth (o5 - present ) --- back to the best time ! [Gel Sol]Ask him when he's gonna release Orbvs Terrarvm Part II and Orblivian Part II. Also, ask him if he sampled the opening bassline fromthe Eagles "One of These Nights" for The Passing of Time. orbvs planned for next year & there's extra tunes too.
maybe one of these things that happen in black ink.
[Ramon Vink] -is there going to be another Orb mission to space? Or is Orb grounded to earth..
yes ! " 7 wonders of the universe " .
-i want to know once and for all, the sample in the start Perpetual Dawn: "what is this? i never heard...." and that 'laughing' sample right after that, where did it come from? -any plans to do a concert in the Netherlands again?
from an old radio show ... love to play in holland .
[John Goerner] Maybe ask him about Pomme Fritz II?
that's a universal idea....
[Dave & Ross] Will The Orb touch down again any time in the near future in TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA? played on vancouver island not so long ago/ may as well been mars if you live in toronto. when we go to the states next year hopefully we will... cyclosonic paners ....... & look after your ears .
peace & love lx
Hi all. I got one of those clocks. It was a proper promo item made for Island Records when the LP came out. Its 18" across got the Orblivion logo across the middle. Its a nice item. I got mine off a geezer who used to work at Island. I have only ever seen another one. Me mate Phil has one. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ramon Vink To: What were the skies like when you were young? Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2007 7:44 AM Subject: RE: [Orb] Orblivion Clock!
