Scrubbing M15 in Rain

Had my M15 out on the Ches. Bay for several days a couple of weeks ago. Still was 60s and 70s high temps there. In the morning, I'd don the life jacket and swimsuit and crawl down the ladder into the water for an early morning wake-self-up-fast swim. Not warm but not frigid either. While in the water, with sponge in hand and one hand grasping the top of the gunwale for support, I'd do a circuit or two of the boat, scrubbing the hull as I went around. Reaching under the boat I could scrub at least halfway to the other side, or at least to where the centerboard receiver lay. Took about 10 minutes and got an invigorating swim in at same time. When I pulled out at the end of the trip, a few minutes after parking the boat and trailer, I got a pail full of freshwater from the boat ramp, and with the same sponge, and a towel, gave the boat a once-over again. I'd do one side with a pail full, then dump that pail and refill it once more from the boat ramp for doing the other side. Took about 15 minutes and I wouldn't have to worry about scrubbing the boat again, till the next trip.

Roller Furling for M23

Good Morning! Long time fellow sailors! I've been sailing the Chesapeake on my M23 for the past 3 seasons and she loves that body of water. I do however, need to bite the bullet and consider roller furling as going forward on that boat in weather on the Bay is not fun. Foredeck hawse pipe

My M 17 Ol'44 came with a hawse pipe ( aka stovepipe) and other hardware on the foredeck to stow a danforth anchor. The navigation light is mounted on the foredeck, also, leaving precious little room to stand. As I rarely anchor, I dont need an anchor close at hand, and having fewer trip hazards is always desirable. I removed all anchoring hardware. My solution for anchoring is to stow anchor and rode under the cockpit sole and rig a messenger line to the bow. The rode is passed thru a carabiner that can be hauled forward. This approach adds complexity to anchoring but the benefit is that you never leave the cockpit. I do have a rather large hole in my foredeck. Jerry commented here that the early boats did not have balsa coring. Should I be able to see the coring in the deck where it was cut? Does anyone know when the use of balsa began? Hawse Pipe Installation onto M15 Bowdeck

Hello everyone, Just finished an 8 day outing on my M15 and it occurred to me, during the voyage, how convenient it'd be to just stow the anchor line and rode directly into a hatch located on the bowdeck. I surely don't use that space below, in the cabin, up by the bow, to store anything important, and how useful it'd be to just stuff most of the anchor line and rode there, into a large plastic tub I suppose, with some kind of bulwark in place separating the area from the rest of the cabin, so as to keep out the not so pleasant odor which accompanies anchor line/rode. When I returned to the ramp, and after pullout, I chatted up a fellow who was in the process, then and there of transferring ownership of his West Wight Potter to another fellow, also there. On the bow deck of the Potter I noticed a small L shaped pipe extruding out of the bow deck with a foot long length of chain coming out of it. He explained that someone had actually stolen the anchor! Anyway, with some internet research, I eventually learned that that pipe is called a "Hawse Pipe". Works for me. Less complicated than a hatch. So was curious if anyone in the group has bothered to install one on their M15 or M17 (or other boat), and has any input on how it's worked out. Montgomery 15 rudder

I’m a new owner. The rudder is cranky about kicking up. I recently made contact with something underwater and it chipped the rudder slightly but didn’t kick it up. I haven’t found any helpful suggestions so far so I’m hoping someone can offer a suggestion or two. Thanks, Lee

So we’ve had our Montgomery 17 for a few years and have been sailing it a lot during the summer months in Vermont. Today we headed to the boat with a stronger wind forecast; we’re now comfortable with a reef in between 14-16 knots, but never had to put in two reefs yet . I thought today might be the day to experiment as I measured 18 knots gusts on our mooring. But before I even raised the main, we had a failure. I guess I haven’t been inspecting this close enough. As I tightened the out haul in preparation of raising the main, the boom jumped forward. I went to the mast and was surprised to find this (see picture). Now we’re on the way to see my brother with a TIG welder. -Gerry

Maintenance questions

Hello fellow Monty owners, first off, I apologize for having to register a new account on the mailing list, somehow my old account seems to have been bungled up and I was not able to recover it. I have two new maintenance questions: a) The rudder on my 1982 M-17 is the one-piece solid mahogany style. When I got it with the boat about 10 years ago it was wrapped in fiberglass, and coated with a couple of layers of some marine varnish. This summer I kept the boat moored in fresh water, and last time I went to it I noticed that large parts of the fiberglass were peeling off. Is the fiberglass needed, or should I just remove it and re-coat the wood with varnish? If I need to redo it all in fiberglass, what should I do to prevent it from peeling again? b) I have a small leak into the cabin around one of the screws that holds the wood hand rails on top of the cabin. I understand that it is important to re-bed the hand rail before the moisture gets inside the balsa core of the cabin top. What is the procedure for doing that? To begin, how does one remove the small wood caps that are covering the screw heads, without destroying the caps? What material do people recommend for the bedding procedure? Thanks,Andrei.
