Mr. Montgomery, My Montgomery 17 was manufactured in 1978. I now have a chance to install an Ida sailor rudder on it from a 2005 Montgomery 17. That setup uses three pintles whereas my older stock rudder model uses only two. Can a third be added so this setup will work on my boat or is there some other consideration that needs tending to? You mentioned you have a stock of old parts. Do you have a set of the old grugeon/pintle (s) available? Regards, Tom B

185 Miles at Lake Powell in Montgomery 15

We had a great time last week running around Lake Powell in our Montgomery 15 along with my brother in his Santana 2023C. The GPS track shows we covered about 185 miles in 7 days. We saw a good portion of the huge lake but there is much more of it to see. What a spectacular place! We put in at Antelope Point near Page and got as far as the upper end of the Escalante River Arm of the Lake including a lot of side trips up canyons along the way, some barely wide enough to fit the boats through or overhangs high enough to clear the masts. It was mostly motoring but we got in a fair amount of sailing - I'd guess 1/4 to 1/3 the time. Winds ranged from (mostly) almost calm to pretty much howling. I was trying out my new-to-me Honda 2 outboard and turned around the howling day because I couldn't keep it headed into the wind with the motor wide open. That day there was blowing sand on land and blowing spray on the water. Once we got past Padre Bay, traffic really thinned out and most of the time we almost had the lake to ourselves. We took lots of photos that I will try to share here somehow when I have a chance and if anyone is interested. A selection are on my Facebook page. I'M PUTTING A TOW HITCH ON MY 2000 , 4 CYLINDER, 2.4 CARAVAN TO TOW MY M15. ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL, SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM. ANYBODY TOWING WITH SOMETHING SIMILAR? JUST WONDERING IF MY CAR WOULD BE ABLE TO TOW THE BOAT WITHOUT A PROBLEM.. ALSO W AS WONDERING ABOUT STOPPING CAPABILITY. SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS, BUT THIS IS ALL NEW TO ME. THANKS, TONY V.

I guess the other thing I like about dropping aft and not using the boom for gin pole is that I leave the mainsail on the boom , flaked, contained within the sailcover. When I remove the sail I unzip the sailcover zipper at the front of the mast, pull the pivot pin on the gooseneck, lower the front of the boom allowing all the slugs to drop out of the gate...and then just re-zip the sail cover around the front of the sail (now behind the mast. The aft end of the boom is still supported by the topping lift so it does not fall. I then gently lower the tack end to the deck, and then go release the topping lift from the tang on the boom....and slide the whole sail all secured within the cover and neatly flaked, into the cabin. Setting back up is just a matter of feeding the slugs into the mast when you drop the gooseneck in and the sail is rigged, including the outhaul purchase and aft reefing lines which are left in place. The sail stays neatly furled within the cover, on the boom. The result is no folds in the sail and it is well trained to fall into the proper flakes when it is lowered each time. I find that much easier than trying to find a place to lay the sail out somewhere and fold it up without getting it dirty.

The A-frame clamps to the two chainplates and consists of two pipes that go forward to just above the stemhead and then are connected together with 2 U-bolts (one facing up and one facing down.) Two halyard are attached to the top U-bolt and the mainsheet is used to connect to the stemhead and the lower u-bolt. The halyards are then used to raise the A-frame perpendicular to the mast and locked off. The mainsheet then provides more than enough purchase for me to raise the mast by pulling the A-frame back down to the starting position just above the stemhead . I stand at the tabernacle and pull on the mainsheet..this allows me to contol the mast side to side until the shrouds get tight. Actually having the boat ever so slightly leaning to one side when I raise it aids me, in that the mast will want to favor that side in it's sway. This is the side I stand on so the mast can just rest against my hip as it goes up. The A-frame automatically centers the pull on the mast and is not able to sway. I also have an extending mast crutch that allows me to kind of pre-elevate the mast in the rear before I start hoisting it with the mainsheet. The Crutch is a custom aluminum deal I made that fits into a Todd seat post base that is mounted in the aft transverse lazzerette lid. This also doubles as a place to mount a cockpit table. The base of the crutch actually screws into it and then at the tip of the extension section I have three rings that allow me to secure three ratchet straps (one goes left to the dock cleat, one right to the dock cleat and one to a padeye I have mounted in the forward cockpit floor. This stablizes the top of the mast crutch. I lay my mast down aft, rather than the stock setup of going forward with it. I don't like going forward because you get so much weight out in front of the pivot point of the pulpit once the mast is down. I do have to remove the inner shrouds to lay it backwards and I suppose I could rotate the chainplates to alleviate this step, but I have never bothered. I use the velcro cotter pin straps to secure my turnbuckles so it's only a couple of minutes to remove them. I also did not like the amount of pressure on the gooseneck fitting using the boom as the gin pole and laying the mast foward. I don't think that going forward it would be very easy to perfect the system so that you can do it singlehanded. I've been using this system single handed for about 6 years, multiple times a year. It is slower to setup than some systems. I suffered a severe injury to my neck about 9 years ago in a mast raising incident with a Santana 23d which has a very heavy double spreader rig. Not wanting to ever find myself in an Air-E-Vac airplane at 2am again, I probably error on the side of caution and my setup time to many is too long. For me though, it makes me 100% self sufficient and safe. I routinely tow, rig, launch , retrieve , and de-rig solo....and in fact I usually prefer it that way. I will probably step the mast in the next week or two here at home to do some final prep work for the trip to the San Juans. If I do I will try to take some video of the process. I make no claims though that "this is the way to do it". Only that "this is the way I do it". Remember....before you consider copying what I am doing....It's a home made system and the guy that uses it is the same guy that just told you he has injured himself severely in a mast raising incident. Dauntless, Faith, Raven, Clarity, and Phil and Mary Mcowin's 23 (sorry Phil I don't know what you called her) will all be converging on Anacortes Washington for a cruise of the San Juans and Gulf Islands in mid June. If ever there was a time to check out some M23 mast raising ....that'll be it! As far as I know this will be the largest gathering of M23's that has happened in many many years. I can't wait!!
