Montgomery 15 Compass Options

This summer, during a week on the Great Slave Lake, I had occasion to have to navigate through fog in unfamiliar waters with rocks and islands to run into. I had loaded a number of way points into my GPS but not enough to navigate in the limited visibility. I relied heavily on chart and a compass and it all worked out. The compass I carry on our Montgomery 15 is a very simple handheld compass (a Ritchie Navigation SportAbout Hand Bearing Compass http://www.westmarine.com/buy/ritchie-navigation--sportabout-hand-bearing-c…) I worked well enough for us to survive in fog on the big lake but it only would read right if held very close to level to the horizon. As a result, to read it I had to hold it carefully level along with steering and navigating. I'd like to find a better compass option. Ideally the compass wouldn't be permanently mounted so it doesn't take up valuable surface that I might want to lean against at anchor but could be deployed at read easily at all angles of heel when underway. Proud new-used owner!

Congrats, John. Say what constitutes a "used owner"? Very old age? You certainly are in the right forum for dealing with a vintage sailboat. I have a 77 and my buddy just down the road also has a 74, His has the reinforcing ridges cast into the overhead. Also, his port side cockpit locker opens into the whole bottom of the hull where mine has a bulkhead on the midship and forward ends. You have been on this site for a long time. Is this your first 17?? I bought mine about three years ago and it could be sailed as is but I couldn't keep my meddling hands off of it so did a lot of voluntary repairs to the rig and gelcoat. My advice, splash it asap and decide what you really can live with and what you really want to change. Have fun, Tom B. Mont, 17, AS-IS.

I have and love our M12. We sail it all the time with two adults (although skinny adults) and two kids 4 and 8 yrs old. It’s works great with our crew although it’s not sports. Someone’s sitting on a jib sheet or on a block and we are usually pulling some toy boats behind us and someone’s sad because their toy boat isn’t making as many splashes as the other. With two adults its great fun. I actually like it best solo as I like being the main ballast being able squeak a little more speed out of the lighter winds and pretend I’m racing. Lastly to make things more confusing, all four of us sail in a single sabot. Yeah people take photos and there are body parts everywhere in the boat, out of the boat but we are laughing and floating. We have a few more pounds before the kids are too heavy and we sink. That’ll be fun too. jP

Proud new-used owner!

Hi all, I am happy to post that I am now the (proud) new owner of "Pajarita," a 1974 Montgomery 17 previously owned by John Chalk. Woo hoo! One picture attached - former owner John Chalk to viewer's right, me to left. Red hull no less. Or maybe orange originally - there are some small rub spots where a sort of mid-70's-trendy orange appears to show through the redder (and faded here and there) color, and what appears to be a thin layer of gray (primer?) between the two. I'll have more questions soon for those of you who own, or have owned, a similar vintage M-17, as I sort out what is original and what is modified and what I might want to modify. M-Boats: Motor shaft length on cut-out transom M17

In my first M17 I found that as long as I was able to fit the ob within the cutout I could always steer the boat with the rudder adequately. I have seen the telltale gouges of propellers hitting the rudder on a number of occasions. I know with my 17 when I used both to turn the boat it would practically spin on a dime. I had a long shaft Volve (back in 1983) and it easily cleared the water when I tilted it up into the cockpit. Tom B, Mont 17 #258

1974 M17 hull #14 for sale

One of the original fixed keel M17s, Griselda, is now for sale. She's in good sailing condition, though some of the deck tackle should probably be replaced. Brand new vhf radio (1 week old) but I think there is an issue with the antenna cable, probably just the connection through the cabin top. Deep cycle battery 1 week old. keel professionally rebedded at the Boat Yard Channel Islands last week. Trailer in great shape, and outboard Evinrude 4hp 2 stroke engine runs well. full crisp sail inventory, including 100% jib, 150% jib, main sail, spinnaker (with pole), 2 storm jibs, and a tanbark jib and main from another boat that should fit great (I never used them, though). Needs some interior cosmetics and cabin top/cockpit gel coat buff/wax (I can have this done for $340). Also could use ask topside wood refinished. Registration good until 2017. Trailer is also registered properly. I can deliver in Southern California or potentially somewhere on the route from California to Texas for the price of gas to wherever it's delivered. I just moved to CA in August but it's not for me and I think it makes better sense to sell the boat than hauling it all the way back to Texas (unless I get the right price from a TX buyer). Capsized

Our Montgomery 15 is a good boat. We were sailing on Union Valley Reservoir in the Crystal basin near Kyburz off of Highway 50. We were stopped and then suddenly hit by a strong gust at an exact 90 degrees. It threw me to the down side and our boat capsized. Within seconds it righted itself. There was no water in the cabin or on the mainsail. We were fine.
