New main or jib?

After a little browsing on the subject it seems obvious that this is a boat model specific question so I ask those with m15 experience: If a guy could only afford one new sail at a time for his M15, should he go for a working jib or main first for best performance in the higher wind days until he could afford the other half of the canvas? And for a perhaps related question: Do you ever sail with only one or the other - main or head? Which and why? Anyone have experience with a hank-on working jib with reef points for those double reefed main days? Would that be a frugal option for a storm jib or is that inviting too much strain on the working jib?...conditions are fresh water daysailing, not racing others but striving for maximum efficiency while under way in higher wind conditions. Basically I don't care how fast I can go, I just don't want to have to stay home when the wind is forecasted to climb above 15mph...whew! that escalated quickly, sorry for the long winded questions.

CO2 cylinders

I have West Marine inflatable PFDs that use water-activated 25g CO2 cylinders. They've had the same cylinders for several years. Should they be replaced from time to time, or are they OK as long as all the indicators are green? Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Rick M17 #633 Lynne L

Mast drilling....

So I'm running mast wires. ..there's an exit hole that's about 1/4 inch down near the bottom of the mast. It would be helpful if it was bigger but I don't want a portable folding mast. Can I enlarge it safely? And how much? Jazz

Hi all boat camped for two days with the little man! What a hoot! Temp was high 40s, so a bit chilly...the condensation was ridiculous, what do you guys know? And Tom, you didn't sneak the lack of porthole picture link by me! Hahaha Jazz

Hahaha > > Jazz > Hi Jazz, On bigger boats, you'd have some insulation, headliners, paneling or something else to mitigate the cold fiberglass. On a pocket cruiser, I do as in tent camping - ventilate. It seems counter intuitive to 'open a window' when it's cold, but you need to get the moisture out. Otherwise it WILL condense on cold hull. Fine tuning that ventilation is can be an art. Alternatives which I've used when winter camping are to keep a small poly 'backpacking towel' handy and just wipe down occasionally. I've also used a small UCO type candle lantern to heat the interior a little. Of course if you do that, you still need ventilation (CO and CO2 etc) and it's potentially a fire hazard, so don't do what I do :-} Cheers, a *La Totumita* M15

I have the 3 piece set for my M17 as well. I cut a piece of clear Lexan to the size of the center board, to add light to the cabin when tucked in below during the rain. What I have found interesting is that with the right rabbit cuts in the sides of the boards they can be really a warped mess and still shed rainwater. My old set as just described still did not let in a drop of rain in the most recent 5" downpour. Replacement M-17 Hatch Boards

I'm about to make new hatch boards for my M-17 using 3/8" marine plywood. I'm replacing a 3-piece set that I made years ago. I've seen photos of 2-piece sets, which I am contemplating. Is there any advantage to the 3-piece variety? Does it make any difference at all? Rich Makela M-17 #233 - Harmony
