New slip!

Hi all, I managed to secure a dockside mooring at Foss Marina, Tacoma WA for El Nino so no mooring anchor stress now. I thought I'd share costs etc...for anyone curious. I had to go to Tacoma (7 miles) instead of Gig Harbor, but it beats trailering, and really 7 miles I can't bitch too much. So it's a dockside mooring, no power. There's a sort of communal water faucet for hosing down and full marina amenities to include bbq area..lounge, security, sundries store, parking, bathrooms, showers..etc. That's all good. The downside: no power as I mentioned, and anything more than about a minus 1.5 tide and I'm not able to squeeze out between the dock and the shore, but I won't be grounded. I couldn't launch from the boat ramp in that tide either..so a bit of a wash there. This slip is running me 120.00 per month. One of the requirements was 300,000.00 worth of liability insurance. Through US Boat, with an accompanying 25.00 membership, I secured this for 101.00 a year for a no depreciation full value policy. The policy which replaces losses at depreciated values would have been 54.00 a year! Quite a deal. My home/auto agent quoted me $400.00. Mmhmmm...next! There are numerous benefits from the US Boat membership that I haven't had time to look at. I know West Marine offers a discount and there's $50.00 towing when I ground it :) Oh the policy covers only Puget Sound and the San Juans area. If I go elsewhere I have to call for a cruising area extension. I think that's the basics. Happy to answer anything else I can. Unfortunately my back is a mess right now and I can't move in! Jazz

For those that are fans of spar varnish, I have a question: I'm refinishing/repairing our hatch boards. They were already varnished so I decided to continue in the same fashion. What I have not been able to get is a 'semi-gloss' finish. i.e. the varnish is indeed, a super-high-gloss finish and unfortunately I'm not interested in the glare on a sunny day, nor in the way that it magnifies every flaw in the substrate. Is there any way to tone it down? thx a

Anchor rollers...

Hi all, I was wondering if I might get some pics or atleast descriptions of your anchor setups. I'd love a little sprit/roller set up, but can't figure how to get around the furler, nav light etc. Also, I have the a deck pipe up there to pass rode through the deck, and there's some sort of anchor holding device on the rail. Where do you guys put your feet when you sleep if the rain and rope live there somewhere??? I'm planning on about 20 ft of chain and 100 ish of rode. Also an overkill anchor so I can leave it in the harbor for days. A local who anchors out there suggested 30lbs. I found a 22lb claw type I'm liking. And have my 8lb Danforth setup as well. I don't even know what else to ask, so lemme have it ! Jazz

Monty 15 Teak clean up

Just hired two 17 year olds to sand down my teak so I can re-varnish it all. The hard part to me is all that crazy sanding. Main /Jib halyard preferences

Personally, I go with 'typical' and 'convention of majority'- your mileage may vary - I look to Starboard for the Main and Port for the headsail halyards when I get on a 'new' boat - then check them (for clear leads too!) A lot like the control pedals on automobiles.... Culled from many boards on the internet: "The "jib-port, main-starboard" is not a hard fast rule.... a but very very common set up." "Main on starboard, jib on port. Except in France. " "Main and Spin hal on Stbd, Genoa and 2nd spin hal on Port. " "In the old days of external halyards & mast mounted winches, certain halyards had to be on certain sides to lead to the winch without chafing on the spreader bases. The bad news is that I haven't finished that book yet, though I have been gnawing away at it for years. So meanwhile the short form is: if the halyard goes into the mast in front, it should come out of the mast in front. That way it will have the fairest lead, and the least likelihood of encountering throughbolts, other halyards, and any other obstacles. This method also makes it easy to figure out whether a line is a jib halyard or a main, because the jib, for instance, is in front, and that's where the halyard exits. And if that halyard exits in front, then it will lead fairest to the starboard winch; if you brought tit out on port, from an exit towards the front of the mast, you would have to deflect it aft, to get a lead to the winch, which would make for a foul lead. And one sees precisely this a lot, because people are still fixated on the "main on starboard, jib on port" mantra, which was evolved specifically for external halyards. Actually it goes even deeper than that, back to the days of external halyard blocks and the first, jib-less sailboats. The point is that rig layout should reflect rig traffic patterns, and inverting the traditional patterns makes sense with internal halyards. There are refinements, like optimizing relative leads based on load and frequency of use. For that, I fear you will have to wait for the book, or take one of our classes. halyard sides, masthead rig clarification

Hi all, In case anyone has any additional info on this... My M17 (1974) came with red and green halyards. However the red was on the starboard side sheaves and the green was on the port side sheaves. So yesterday I swapped them around - it wouldn't matter if they weren't colored line of course, but I found it confusing that they were opposite sides from the normal navigation colors. The real question - or comment maybe - is this: On this M17, the masthead sheaves are angled slightly from true fore-aft. One pair of sheaves lines up on the aft side with the mainsail slot - for the main halyard, obviously - and is slightly to port on the fore side of the mast. The other pair of sheaves - obviously for the jib halyard - lines up with the center of the fore of the mast, and is slightly to starboard of the sail slot on the aft side of the mast. Now I've got the green halyard coming down the starboard side - on the sheaves aligned at masthead for jib - and the red halyard coming down the port side - on the sheaves aligned at masthead for main. The handful of other sloops I've learned to rig and sail (none were masthead rigs, I realize now) all had the main halyard starboard, jib halyard to port. Some net searching indicates there's no 'standard' but that main to starboard predominates and there may be reasons why racers prefer that. OK, no problem there. The other issue that comes to mind is that when hove to, on starboard tack (for right of way reasons), the main halyard is on the lee side, somewhat less convenient to get at for putting in a reef. But it seems there's nothing to be done - the masthead is the way it is. I'd either have to cross the halyards, or, have them off-center for their respective sail heads. So, questions: Is this the normal masthead setup for an early vintage M17? Am I missing some simple obvious forehead-smacking detail that would make this different? John, When hove to on starboard tack the main halyard is on the weather or starboard side of the boat - facilitating reefing the main - the side of the boat that the boom is on dictactes port/starboard tack, OR more correctly in ALL cases - 'Definitions' - "Tack,Starboard or Port A boat is on the tack, starboard or port, corresponding to her windward side."* * 2013-2016 edition of The Racing Rules of Sailing under license from the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) - page 5 Definitions Hove to on starboard puts the boom on the port side of the boat (to leeward) - opposite the halyard when located in the 'typical' location. GO (when 'backing' - has me a bit confused - have to try and figger that one out. Slip gone!

Well, I missed on the slip somehow. Not sure what happened as they were closed over the holiday weekend. I left phone and email messages. Maybe the information on the website was not up to date. No fear however, there are many marinas, I'll keep hunting! I did find out why the price was so good, that particular slip was considered to dry out as the water level would get to 2.5 feet on a low tide. Heheh! El Nino would be floating away happy as could be! OOoh, and some serious progress with the Admiral this weekend! We pulled into Pleasant Harbor Marina and for $50 had a sweet overnight, champagne, hottubs, pool, restaurant and a waterfront view to kill for! We went out for a sail and the Admiral had a sudden interest in what things were called, and how to work things. She insisted on taking down the sails herself. To pull the boat out, there was a loooong trailer line at the ramp. The admiral suggested she stay on the boat while I wait in line and that she would be the Captain and bring it over to the trailer when it was time. 45 minutes later, here she comes! Putt Putt Putt....started the motor, motored over and parked like a pro right behind the trailer. That is a big change from, "Get me off this $#$#@!! boat! I can't do this." I could hear in my mind the power boaters going...ohhh boyyy here comes 30 minutes. One guy walks over and goes, boy, that's probably a different deal at the ramp. I said, nah, it pulls right up and out. We were out in 5. I can't tell you how many people asked about El Nino at the marina. My favorite was, "What a beautiful boat, looks like it would go anywhere." To which I replied, "They've been to Hawaii and further." "You're shitting me???" LOL One admirer says, one sec....comes back in a few with a life sling all packed up and ready to go...he says here, I have two. Very nice of him. And El Nino is definately not the prettiest Monty around, I can imagine the attention some of your boats get. Thank you to all for the nice comments on the song btw!
