Randy, thanks for the tip: Ted's Sailing Page does have some very helpful contributions to the discussion of floatation. (see http://sites.netscape.net/tedsailingpage/Floatation.html) Specifically, it is very helpful to know that fiberglass weighs 125 lbs per cubic foot. Using Ted's method of calculation, a fully swamped M15 would displace about 3.8 cubic feet all by itself, without any added foam. However -- the brochure states that "We also core the V-berth section of the liner with foam so that it's strong yet light." In addition, the balsa-cored decks need to be taken into account. So the swamped M-15 unquestionably will displace even more than that 3.8 cu/ft of fiberglass. But how much more? I'm willing to chalk up small unknown amounts of displacement, such as the balsa deck cores, to extra reserve boyancy and leave them out of the calculations. But what about the alleged foam-cored V-berth area? Does anyone have the slightest idea how much volume of foam we might be talking about? How thick is it? and how much of the hull liner is constructed in this way? Also, does anyone know: were all the M15s built with that foam cored hull liner? (I have already found other claims in the brochure which do not seem to apply to my #152, such as the alleged "cavernous" port cockpit locker.) Steve M15 #152

M15 draining- Steve the M15 drains fast unless something is clogging the drain. I haven't taken a wave into the cockpit but think it would drain adequately. When I wash the boat out I put a garden hose in a full force and the drain keeps up. comparison to the P15 drain- it's a bit different, if I remember how my P15 was set up it drained out the rear transom through a ½" line. That set up worked pretty well and the M15 works well as it's designed to also. If you're in Texas anytime let me know and I'll be glad to take you out on my M15. sail locker modification

Thanks Connie! You are a bottomless font of useful info! I definitely won't be trying the cockpit locker modification until next year at the earliest, although I desperately need it. I have as yet NO experience in fiberglass or gelcoat working and don't want that to be the project I learn on. Would you (or anyone else out there) have a suggestion for a minor, perhaps less visible fiberglass/gelcoat modification that would make a good starter project for us neophytes? It keeps thing in place in the sail locker. This bulkhead - about 1 foot high is located on both sides of the boat. My port sail locker, however, has a wall on the inside side, i.e., going from the side of the cockpit seat wall to the bottom of the hull. This keeps thing in the sail locker from rolling under the cockpit sole, and disappearing forever! Now that I cut out the starboard side shallow locker, there is no wall down there. All that is located there are the styrofoam flotation logs. So, the new storage area is only good for large, easily reached and grabbed objects; which is why I have my Bimini, my extra cushions, boarding ladder, etc. stored there. Incidentally, I drilled holes on each end of the shallow locker; threaded about an 1/8th inch line through the holes, put on a piece of plastic tubing as a handle, and tied off the lines on the outside of the shallow locker. This way, I have readily accessible handles for lifting out the locker when I wan to get at the "goodies" that are stored underneath. If you are thinking of doing this modification, let me know and I'll give you more detailed instructions on how I did it. No sense of reinventing the wheel! Well I would love to, David. But if you were able to take your boat out in the last week, you must be an awfully awfully long way away from me! Wish I could take mine out. Just get my M15 about 3 weeks ago, and I don't know how I'm going to be able to wait till Spring.
