Saving your scalp

While lying in the v-berth I chanced to look up at the underside of the deck and thought about all those nuts up there with all their sharp edges. They would not feel good grating across your scalp in a wildly pitching boat. I ended up buying some stickon furniture leg buttons, the felt type with the super sticky back. I punched 3/8 inch holes in the center of each using a piece of metal tubing about that diameter and filing an edge alone its outside circumference on one end. By placing each felt button on a block of wood I was able to hammer the tube cookie cutter style through each one. It is then a simple matter to peel the backing and place each felt "donut" around each protruding nut. This not only protects your head from the metal nut but with the hole in the felt you can see instantly if the bolt/nut combination has started to leak. Another "back scratcher" I accidentally found on board was the forward end of the main hatch. Stand up too quickly to get into the cockpit and you risk mashing your backside on that edge. Here I took a small "pool noodle" although foam pipe insulation will work too and will not protrude down into the cabin as far, I sliced a one inch section out of it with a sharp knife leaving a foam channel which can be contact cemented around the perimeter of the main hatch inside the cabin. Just one less thing to bang your head or back on in confined quarters. Both projects are quick but will take a cold night up north to do if you dress yourself warmly. With a lot of help from those on this list, particularly Stan Sussman (hope I spelled that right), a year and a half ago I removed the bottom paint on my Montgomery 15. What a miserable process. But I like the bottom now. I wholeheartedly agree about avoiding bottom paint if you can! If you can, avoid bottom paint. If you can't, use copolymer (a/k/a self-polishing) paint. Someone else mentioned a barrier coat. If your gelcoat is in good condition you DO NOT need that. The usual practice is to use hard paint the first season and then let that act as a guide coat under self-polishing paint of a different color in subsequent seasons. When the hard paint starts to show through the self-polishing paint, it is time to recoat. Also, when you first paint gelcoat, you must thoroughly clean AND dewax it, no matter how old the boat is.

A paddler/sailor/rower paradise, with boat-in camping various places around the lake and three USFS campgrounds all with ramps and docks on the east side, (two just closed for the season, one still open another week or so). You can see it on google maps satellite view/google earth...Waldo Lake, OR. We took advantage of a handful of days of late summer heat wave to have 70's in the day and high 40's at night up there at around 5000 ft. Glassy in the AM & early afternoon, but some very nice sailing from about 2:30 on to suppertime. I kayak camped some years ago there and definitely wanted to get Pajarita in the water there this season...just in time! Overall with that wind pattern a better lake for sail-row camp cruisers, or something like my friend Keith's Hobie Adventure Island tri with both the sail & pedal drive options (he was able to tow me in the doldrums, albeit rather slowly). And, I think it can be breezy all day sometimes, this was just what we had for this trip. An early morning kayaker reported a bout of whitecaps on his way back to the campground at something like 9 AM the second day. Will post a few pics when I get them off the camera. Should have taken some of my anchor placements, you can see the bottom and everything on it very clearly 30+ feet down. cheers, John S.

What to do if you want to put an M-boat in Salt water for a time..

We have thought about putting our M-17 2005 into Salt Water at Bodega Bay. What do we need to do to protect it from Salt Water. Take it out, how often (?) to pressure wash the bottom. What about the mast. It is unpainted aluminum? Do we need to get it painted? What else? Gail Russell Hydeaway1 M-17

It was an interesting trip; mostly under power down the Hudson, because of headwinds, but on our final day we had a glorious sail through the middle of New York Harbor and under the Verrazano Bridge to our Staten Island destination.
