Robbin In the past I wondered - who 'invented' the underwater swimming pool electric light fixture (pre GFCI- if that will protect you?) AND electric brakes for boat trailers that are immersed in salt and freshwater? I would spend the $ on hydraulic disc brakes - make sure they are installed on the proper axle. (fiber optics for the pool light is a better option) Not a good idea to rely on the F-350's brakes only. It would be a bad idea and most likely illegal too. Hate it when the insurance company 'skates' because we forgot some technicality! Still wondering....'bout many things. GO

Hi Robbin, Surge brakes have their problems as well. (can't back up, etc.). It may get down to how much money you want to spend. The "best" usually costs more. The M23 is heavy enough that brakes are important, especially if navigating mountains. When we towed our M23 from Ontario, California to Golden, Colorado last October, Bob rigged the brakes so they would not engage. We towed the boat with a Toyota Tundra. The Toyota has manual shifting as well as automatic, so we used the gears quite a bit to slow us down when going down mountains. When we finish our M23, we'll more than likely just sail her locally and keep her slipped for the season, so we haven't decided whether or not to replace the brakes with a more controllable system. (We'll use out Sage 17 or M15 for traveling to distant sailing locations. Getting a little old to rig a M23 for a short sail). You can use the brakes on your truck, but it will shorten their life. The best system, in my opinion is to have a system that you can control the brakes on the trailer while driving. We have a switch in the cab that causes the brakes to engage on our other trailers so we can engage the brakes on the trailer without touching the brakes on the truck. This type of control is nice. Hi Robbin, My trucker friends have told me electric is the way to go. They work the best and are adjustable.I rebuilt the brakes on my M23 Trailrite with new parts. I kept it a drum setup. Everything was bolt up and straight forward. Pioneer truck/trailer parts in Mpls had all the parts on the shelf. You can buy the complete backing plate with wheel cylinder, shoes, all assembled.I had a welding shop replace some rusted/rotted parts on the frame, as well as welding on a new Attwood coupler/master cylinder. I don't trailer far, so this has worked for me. Theo went the same route rebuilding his trailer. Monty 15

I have and older Monty15 that the mast support at the stern for trailering only has one position for support. I was wondering if some body could give me lenght of one that had the double support and the measurment of the lower supports and a picture of it? So I could modify the one I have.

Centre Board Slop

Hello All, Am a new M-15 owner, very pleased with my boat built in 1981 and sporting the original sails no.121. Have had a dozen outings in the last month in all weathers. The centre board in some wave conditions seems to knock against the trunk, I think in a lateral motion since the pendant is properly set,. Is this a normal occurrence with the M- 15 ? Also I tend to accumulate water in the deep spot behind the trunk and have to sponge out every few days. Any idea why.? Having owned DS- 16, Siren 17’s and Compac 16’s ,none compares with Jerry Montgomery’s little marvel. Each sailing session is a treat. RTH.

Sailing Montgomery 15 at Mission Bay

We may have the opportunity to bring our Montgomery 15 to Mission Bay in the next month or so for a day of sailing. We hope to poke around the bay and get out onto the ocean while we're there. New Halyards and sheets

Montypals: Thinking of replacing my halyards and sheets. They are old, and starting to fray a bit. On my old Vagabond I replaced my halyards with New England Sta-set. Seemed fine. Launching & Rigging

A few months ago, I wrote that I must be the slowest rigger anywhere. It took me 3-1/2 hours to setup, rig and launch my 1977 M-17. I got lots of good ideas from y'all, so I thought I'd make a report. I rigged the boat single-handed, and launched in 1-1/2 hours yesterday. Four key changes made the difference. 1) An old army gas mask bag hanging from my shoulder contains all the tools I need, and holds tie-downs, reducing the number of times I have to hop up and down off the deck. 2) I leave the shrouds in their final, adjusted length so I don't have to fiddle with turnbuckles anymore. 3) A lever-action tensioner in the backstay lets me swing the mast just far enough forward of its normal position to easily attach the CDI furler and headstay. 4) a re-designed trailer tongue extension can be attached using no tools. I can't remember who sent me all these ideas, but thanks, thanks, thanks!
