Planing to sail from Edenton NC (70 miles south of Hampton VA and 140 miles east of Raleigh NC). Depending on wind and wave conditions will either launch at Edenhouse Bridge on the Chowan River (anchor on the Cashie River & downtown Edenton) or the Midway Ramp on Albemarle Sound (anchor on the Yeopim & Scuppernong Rivers. Straight line distance for the 3 days days will be around 40 miles. This trip is spur of the moment but other trips are being planned for southern Virginia/ Hampton Roads area in July & perhaps Lake Champlain in August/early September. Thomas, Robbin, and quality M-folks, I have used the Loos gauges to measure shroud and stay tension on both my M17 and M23. I thought I was doing everything correctly with German precision until I read a report that most of those measurement tools are fairly inaccurate. I would set tension at 10% of breaking strength (as per instructions). It always seemed to me that the rig was too tight. Well, my new formula is to set tension by feel. I do still use the gauges to balance shrouds side to side, bit I am definitely tuning my rig softer. It fits in with my easy going, relaxed, don't rush me state of mind. As always, I'll watch the rig under sail. I'll be checking the slack of the inner shrouds under a hard beat to weather. Adjust as necessary, and check again after several times out. Now, if I could only measure voltage and current by feeling a conductor!!! It would lighten my tool bag on service calls. I have a few thoughts about your tabernacle and cracked sole.It may be possible that the rigging on your M23 may have been overtightened or stressed at some point. I think it happened to my M23 as well.The former owner Dick Lane noticed this and rebuilt the top deck and added support. On my boat, the deck under the tabernacle has been replaced in a small section, the tabernacle moved aft a few inches, and a thick metal plate has been added inside the boat at the top of the compression post.Perhaps in the original build the deck was a bit too thin for the mast loading. M17 For Sale, Price Lowered......

For those looking for a great deal: my 1999 Montgomery 17 is still for sale, so have lowered the price to $10,000....... It's a heck of a price for such a great boat in such good condition and extras that come with it. Have lowered the price to compensate for the drive to San Antonio that many interested in the M17 are a bit hesitant to make. Having to sell to get my home foudation leveled, and, I've had six great years of sailing the boat! To get the price down, I've taken a few extra items out of the sale. Please contact me for details... I just polished/waxed the hull, cockpit and deck so everything is bright and shiny.
