Hello Blake, I use an inflatable kayak -- a Sea Eagle 330. I have found this to be quite adequate for my uses. It inflates quickly with a foot pump and deflates very quickly. It is easy to tow and I can take two children or one other adult with me. The only drawback I have found is a propensity to flip in strong winds and a crossing sea. In these cases I simply pump some water into the kayak to give it some ballast. I have also brought it aboard and quicky deflated it so that it can sit in my cockpit. Paddling is fine -- not as good as a hardshell but good enough to meet my needs of getting back and forth to shore. Not sure I would go on longer paddles with it... John M15 Jester

A couple comments on choosing a kayak: If you're considering a hardshell, look for one with an oversize cockpit, as in a recreational or day touring model. It's much easier to climb into and out of from your sailboat. Something like the low end Otter is OK, small and light, but for a better paddling model, the Necky Manitou Sport or Old Town Cayuga 110 (which I have) are good choices. If you want to build your own, Pygmy Kayaks just came out with a good looking Sport/Recreational model. Inflatable kayaks offer some advantages: easier to transport in your car, stowable aboard your boat until needed, light weight, Disadvantages: having to inflate and deflate for use (made much easier with a rechargeable pump), don't paddle nearly as well as a hardshell. The hardshell has the disadvantage of having to be towed all the time. Yes, they're easy to tow, little drag, but in following seas they can become a handful. And of course, if you have two people on board, an inflatable would be better than towing a two man hardshell. The basic decision comes down to whether you're just looking to get to shore, or if you want to explore the anchorage, coves, and backwaters in your kayak. I like to explore, so I use the hardshell, but there were days I kinda wished I wasn't towing it. NEW M17 Mainsail for sale

Hi Folks: I hate to do it, but I can't figure out a better way... My brand-new, used-one-time mainsail that I bought is for sale. Loose-footed, two sets of reef points. I've only had it on the boat one time... long enough to figure out that the mast length was increased by 6" at some point after my boat was built. (DOH!) So rather than spend ANOTHER $100+ to have this one recut, I've decided to sell it and have a new one built from scratch. I'm asking $450, which is what I paid for it, plus shipping from 37415. Also if anyone's interested, I've got an M17 spinnaker and fancy- schmancy turtle bag that I've never used on my boat. I don't know what to ask for this, so I'm accepting offers. I've also got a spinnaker pole for this rig that I'd consider selling, but I think shipping would be a problem. Of course, you are welcome to pick these up in Chattanooga, TN if you're out this way. Why yes Jerry, I would be happy to discuss the role of 'multi-purpose' items found on the cheap guys boat set up for racing. A bucket -preferably collapsable - will serve manifold roles. A whisker pole becomes a -handy billy, boat hook, downwind pole, and when in the hands of a world class paddler - even a paddle! The pole of preference is a Forespar ADJ 6-12 as the cross section/weight are not so much as to become a burden when employed as a 'paddle'. In the interest of brevity I while save the other 'multi-purpose ' applications for later posts. ( We were actually hauling along down the slip fairway with Dr.Jerry floggin' the water! - yours truly had some sort of an outboard engine issue that afternoon) But Jerry - What 'caliber' is recommended for the bloody outboard motor? (ask anyone who knows me - I am a cheap one - heck I haven't even painted the other side of my boat yet!) The WM Store in my neighborhood is just down the street (Mr.Mulligan worked there way back when) and if you need them - you need them and are glad they are there. I carry two whisker poles on Audasea. Smaller one is 1 inch (too small) and larger 1 1/4" diameter at 6' to 12' is just right. Forespare with the spike end. The lexan fitting for that is probably Forespar #300025. West Marine catalog has about 10 options to chose from, again, depending on the size of your pole and mast. The one on my boat came installed, but is metal, not plastic. I also use it to anchor the clevis ends of both halyards when I drop the sails. That larger whisker pole is one of my favorite pieces of equipment. Anytime the wind goes aft of the beam, it's a big plus to get that out there. A lot better sail shape and they don't flog around as much in light air and chop from the powerboats. Wow, Larry, what kind of gale were you sailing in? The only time I have broached in my M-17 was when we were carrying a 135% genoa and full main on a downwind leg in a driving rainstorm in a club race last fall. We got hit by a gust clocked by another boat in the fleet at 39 kt, and rounded up with the coaming in the water, taking a gallon or so into the cockpit, but we recovered quickly. Sailed the rest of the way downwind under main alone, reefed at the leeward mark and sailed the last windward leg with reefed main and partially furled jib under good control. That experience gave me awesome respect for the M-17's dusty weather capabilities, and its ability to "bring you home" under almost any conditions.
