I've used Cetol for years and I like it. As close to maintenance-free as you can get IMHO. Has anyone used the Cetol Natural Teak finish? I take it you have to strip the old finish off and start anew. Does it result in a 'natural' looking finish? Thanks. t

Re. the issue of through-hull transducers -- I have a Navman depth sounder with the transducer mounted to the hull under the forward berth with a blob of silicon caulk (per manufacturer's instructions). It was worked flawlessly for years. David Hill M17 Grouper

Tom, I used Cetol on my M15 teak. The keys seem to be: 1. Clean the teak as thoroughly as possible. I used (with much care) deck stripper using a old paint brush followed by a putty knife or shaped woodworking scrapers. It took a while. The use a small stiff nylon brush to get in the crevasses to get out as much of the black, dead algae and moss as possible. You won't get it all out, but that's OK, it's a boat, not a china hutch. If you have to. some very, very light sanding by hand or finishing sander is OK if needed, followed by fine bronze wool. Tack off well with tack rag each time. Do not use steel wool. Teak is surprisingly soft and sands easily so be careful to maintain the edges. 2. Clean and wash off well and let dry until bone dry. 3. Go over lightly with fine bonze wool to take off any raised fibers. Wipe off well with tack rag. 4. Get some painters tape and plastic sheeting and mask/cover very carefully. Take your time. Whatever is left uncovered will get will get Cetol on it. Bet on it. 3. Buy a really good 1 -1/2 or 2 inch trim brush. About 20 dollars, but it will be worth it. You don't have to clean the brush each day, just wrap it in plastic food wrap. 4. I put on about 7 coats, one light coat a day, of Cetol. Flow it on like lacquerer or enamel, do not brush it in. Let dry 24 hours between coats. On occasion I rubbed it gently with fine bronze wool if there seemed to be any roughing of the surface. Tack off well. I did all this in my garage to avoid the Cetol picking up windblown dust and airborne debris. 5. I then put on 5 Coats of Cetol clear gloss. 6. Let it sit for a day and remove the tape and plastic. You can buy all but Cetol at the Ace Hardware store. Looks great. JOHN Salem, OR M15 Slip Knot

yep, I used "Natural Teak Cetol". I really like it. Never liked the look of the other cetol's too much...too orange for my liking. My hatch boards are high gloss varnished teak and except for the gloss, the cetol looks very similar. This stuff seems to hold up pretty well too. I got two seasons out of uncovered Natural teak on my exterior wood (handrails, eyebrowes, trim) before I had to strip and re-do. That's pretty good,,,,,no, excellent for here in our AZ sun. Had I been a good boy and done the recommended "Maintenance Coats" at the specified interval I suspect I wouldn't have had to re-do it. When stripping it I for the first time ever used a scraper. A good scraper and I followed instructions in a varnishing book about how to use it properly. WOW! why have I spent my life sanding. Never again. A good quality properly used scraper is a magical too for re-finishing wood! (I'm a slow leaner...!) Sean used Cetol Natural Teak on Dauntless. Looks good, doesn't have the "tint" that regular Cetol has, and seems to be holding up well in the Arizona sun. Skip, A great trip report! That is a very thinly populated area. I did a cruise about 30 miles south of there a few years ago and it was well worth the trip. Some great sailing 3 hours on both sides of the top of the tide but outside of that window there is no water. I wish I could have been there. My depth sounder is the old fashioned piece of lead on a rope. The building lots were never sold and developed so I tired?up and spent the night.? I made a mesh hatch cover for this trip which came in?very handy at night.? When the tide was out and the marsh mud shores were exposed the bugs come out!!!? Wow, you haven't lived until you wake up in the morning to the aroma of swamp mud.? I was affraid to make coffee in the morning for fear the whole cove would explode!!!? The next morning we finished exploring the coves and wildlife and then eventually headed back to South Point?to pull out and head home.? It was a great sail. I do have a?question for all you experience sailors.? I had installed a depth finder in my boat in preparation for this trip.? I placed the transponder in the forward hatch just forward of the ballast bump.? I read on the MSOG website that another boat owner located their transponder there and it worked well.? Well, I must have a cheap unit, because the transponder will not shoot through the hull, even though the manufacturer claims it will.??I ended up having to?rig a quick external mount?and place the transponder in the water just below the bow to get a reading.? Here's my questions.? What units do others have that actually will work as a thru hull unit.? Has anyone rigged a removable bracket so that they can mount the unit off the bow when in use and removed when on the trailer?? Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated. Instead of splicing a new halyard to your existing wire halyard, consider replacing the entire line with 44' of 1/4" XLE Polyester double braid available from <www.rwrope.com/> Worked perfectly on Rejoyce! and never sorry I did it. halyard

I would use an all line halyard and get rid of the wire. ?You can either splice it, tie a bowline, or us a splicing nut. ?I prefer using all line because it is much easier on the mast. Bert M 15, Zephyr
