I am just now getting some time to mess around with the pictures and videos we took on the San Juan/Gulf Island Cruise. As some of you may have seen, we have a page on our website specifically for our pooch, Bosun, who now can officially be called a "sailing dog" after spending 14 consecutive days and nights and around 200 miles aboard "Dauntless". He did better then we could have ever hoped for and added more to our cruise than I can describe to you. Everyone on the cruise was extremely dog friendly and we thank them for that. You guys are awesome. Whenever there was limited dock space crews could be heard on the radios talking about "let's save some space for the "dog boats" (of which we were one of three) knowing that it made it way easier for us if we could be at a dock rather than on the hook. How cool was that?! Anyway, I have updated Bosun's webpage with some pics and short videos of him enjoying and relaxing with us on another trip of a lifetime. Over the next couple of weeks I'll put together a much more detailed and boat oriented set of pages describing the trip, people, routes, weather, etc. Should be a fair amount of video and tons of pics. So.... Sandra, As David pointed out, in a chop, making good speed water will come up though the centerboard pendant hole, which is quite large as it also functions as the cockpit drain, The cockpit floor normally slopes away from the stern to the cockpit drain. With a lot of weight in the cockpit this slope will be minimal and the water will not drain properly. If I am going to sail with 3 people in the boat I try to keep all us us well forward and will put a 5 gal jug of water way up in the bow to keep the boat "on her lines". This keeps the water draining out of the cockpit fast enough so that it is not noticeable except for that little bit in the lee forward corner. Don't panic, you have a fine fine boat. Hatch boards

M17 "Sloop John B". Just had to add my 2 cents worth about hatch boards, 3/8 is far to thin a material for long lasting hatch boards and tapering the edge works for a while until the end grain which is now double in size as a square edge is more apt to suck in moisture. With a little warping they will jamb. I increased the guide size to 7/8" and use 3/4" mahogany ply, 3 boards with 20 degree bevel where they meet each other so as to direct water out. All edges were sealed with west epoxy then spar varnished. They have been in use for 4 years and I just stripped them and put 8 coats of vitralite spar varnish on for another few years. Solid teak would be nice but hard to get and very pricey. I would assume that marine plywood (or even exterior grade) glue would be impervious to moisture, since I have found such materials very resistant to delamination in years past. Perhaps the EPA banned effective adhesives for environmental reasons. It is also possible that teak is too oily to bond to the backing sheet in very wet environments. Solid teak slides would be really nice (I have 3/4" on my Nor'Sea), if the material came in 3/8 or 1/2 thicknesses of adequate width (somewhat doubtful). I imagine polycarbonate plastic would work too, although it would not have the same aesthetic appeal. My lower board has a Plastimo mini-Contest in the center, and it works well. My plan is to put a combo fish finder/GPS next to it, if I can deal with the transducer cable, and holders for a portable VHF and binoculars (or a coffee cup) on the other side. The whole mess can be replaced with a simple board when the boat is not under sail, but it sure would be handy when in use. Tom and Joe, I have three sections of hatchboards on my M23, and found that water would pool on the bridgedeck and delaminate the lowest dropboard. When I decided to make new ones, I constructed the lowest from starboard (white) and the top two from some exotic hardwood my carpenter friend found. It is African Black Limbau. I varnished the top two and it looks fabulous. During winter storage the old boards get put back to use. My M-17 mainsheet came with a similar arrangement, with the cam cleat below the block only a few inches above the cockpit floor. I disengage the cleat with my foot, which involves no bending down, and the cleat reengages as soon as I pull up on the sheet. I can keep the sheet uncleated by keeping my foot on it. I have found this a really easy way to work the mainsheet - foot to unbelay, hand to belay, no body movement involved. It's particularly convenient racing in a gusty breeze when it's necessary frequently to spill wind from the main. Hello All, After reading the post regarding the Texas 200 and the WWP that sunk I was thinking about the Monty's self-recovery ability. I don't recall any postings regarding Monty's being knocked down but am sure it has/can happen. Last year while sailing on Lake Superior around Isle Royale I took some water over the combings -- not a pretty sight seeing 55 degree water pouring into the cockpit... Has anyone experienced or heard of a M-15 or M-17 being knocked down? I like adventure sailing with my M-15 and believe it is a very capable micro-cruiser. However, I am not sure how it would handle if it were knocked down and swamped. John M-15 Jester

San Juan trip

To Montgomery aficionados: Before the emails flying back and forth confuse the casual reader, I want to comment publicly on this year's San Juan adventure. Larry Yake did a fabulous job making this another "trip of a lifetime" by timing the departures and routes to go with the currents, and ordering up winds for Too Much Fun sailing. He even provided a yellow boat so we could see him a mile away and know we had not gone astray. I know Sean on Dauntless also had a big part in making this a successful trip, as did others in the group who never hesitated to share their knowledge and assistance. As for our craft--an M17 on what turned out to be its maiden voyage (for us)--it hosted two adults and a dog for two weeks, with all the standard cruising equipment: safety gear, dinghy, food, clothes, (unneeded) spare gasoline, charts, etc. with some room to spare. No whining here, since Utah Paul and his son sailed an M15 for much of the trip, and voiced no complaints to my knowledge. Shockingly, our 17 also sailed well and safely and occasionally rapidly despite its heavy load, although we could not compete with the skill of most of the other skippers. In conclusion, if you hear about a trip with these fine folks, and have one of these fine boats, join the fun. Sunshine Coast up there in Canada, anyone? Tom Jenkins M17 Scintilla

Hatchboards

I have teak plywood hatch board that are absorbing water down the sides and coming apart. I have to replace them but I am not sure what to use. Replacing them with the same material is not a good option since mine are less than a year old. I was just wondering what others are using. Thanks, Tony 08 M17

Tony; I just made( ok- with a little help) a new set from 3/8 teak plywood. The archives suggested to me to make them three piece, and to epoxy the edges. I'd decided to use Cetol, so overlapped the epoxy about 1/4" onto the flat. That might not look too great if you were going natural or oil finish. I sure don't see mine delaminating any time soon, at least from the edges soaking up water. I found a woodworker's specialty lumberyard here in Michigan that sold it in 4'x4' , one side teak, sections for less than $70.00, so had enough for a spare set and a fourth screened center section, and envision a dedicated compass mount small bottom board too. Idle minds and rainy days go together well! My old bracket compass needs replacing, and I don't like it there in the middle of the port bulkhead anyway, so I'm looking for ideas if anyone wants to offer suggestions. Still deciding if a real sailboat compass is what I need. Plastimo has Mini-Contest, and Mini-C, and Ritchie has a similarly priced model (maybe SR-2 Venture-if my memory is engaged) that look useful. Hey, and maybe that little table idea somebody posted. I've been rolling the idea around for a table base/small item/beverage holder to fit over the compass mount board too, another archive posting idea.
