Hey Doug, That's a neat technique. What knot do you use to tie the spring line to the anchor rode? BTW, I thought you'd like to know that cold weather is coming to New England today. A couple questions from a new, used m15, owner in Yakima, Wa. 1. Has anyone successfully installed and used deck or toerail lifting eyes to lift your m15 with a hoist? I have read a few articles about lifting with shroud toe rail plates; I don't want to do that. I have used web hull slings with previous boats and don't want to do that. I'm thinking about one pad eye bolted through each side of the deck, with 1.5"x1.5"x12" stainless steel backing angle. Would locate 1.5" inside the teak toerail and about 4" rear of the shrouds. Would also use a balancing hoist line back to each cockpit cleat. 2. Does anyone know of a manufactured boat cover with cutouts for montgomery's standard bow and stern rails? thanks, john and candace manfredi

Hey Ken, I'm looking at doing the same ladder project. My '85 M15 transom seems strong enought but I would still use marine plywood. I would seal the plywood with resin for added strength and moisture protection, and then I would probably use 3M 4200 to do double-duty as both an adhesive and sealant against water penetration from the drilled holes. The only caveat I could see is the ability to adjust the board around as you line up the bolts through the holes. If the caulking sets up too quickly then you don't get a 2nd chance. So make sure it's a slow-setting adhesive. Not sure if 4200 would be right in that regard until tested. I have experience only with 4000UV and it's gooey but you could still make adjustments within a 20 minute span. BTW which ladder did you buy? 2, 3 or 4 step? Garelick? Windline? I'm thinking I'll go with the Garelick because the mounting pattern is over a smaller area to give me more flexibility on where to position the ladder. Can't be too close to the rudder but also if it's too far to starboard the boat will heel more to starboard while climbing aboard. Hope to find a happy medium center-point (that's why a small mounting footprint is good) and hoping the 3 step would fold up nicely against the transom without protruding too far over the top. Neil

m-15 jibs

I have a 2007 m-15 with the lapper (128%?) jib, and after a summer of sailing, I think it is too much sail for my lake with one sailor much of the time. I am looking at buying either a regular (90%?) jib or a storm jib. I have an old jib from another boat which is probably comparable to a large storm jib, but it is cut pretty full, is red, and doesn't look that great. It does tame the boat right down without losing any speed. Any opinions out there as to how much difference I would see with the 90%jib vs my current lapper and recommendations as to which way to go?

Bummer...Sorry the cleats didn't work out. Maybe the flag supplier will take them back for a refund or restocking fee. Anyway it was worth a try. None of the other cleats I found had the same "flat top" shape. In the grand scheme of things, you're right that the spacing of the mounting holes is priority 1.

Bow Sprit...

I'm working on making a bow sprit to hold my anchor on my M-15. It is made of 2" thick teak and is 11" wide and will stick out 13" from the bow, it is tapered at the front. I have not attached it to the boat yet as I am still positioning the anchor and finishing some other fitting tasks. I went out for a sail yesterday and there was a good 15 knot wind and 2 to 3 ft waves that were almost breaking the bow which got me thinking. If a wave catches this bow sprit it could act like a plow and drive my bow into the water, causing it to capsize. I am thinking of making it a couple of inches shorter and perhaps drilling holes in it to help avoid a situation. Is there anyone who might have had some experience with this or has some idea of what could be done. Not installing the bow sprit is not an option that I want to hear after getting this far... Neil We have Bottomsiders on Motu iti M17 and love them. We made paper patterns of each side and 1 side is wider than the other on the Jerry built 17's. They are split so you can get into the seat lockers. They are very easy to clean, are not hot in the Texas summers, and still look like new after 10 years. Yes, they are a little pricy but worth it.
