Joe, Now, that is a thorough explanation! I had a "duh" moment after my last post, when I finally pictured reefing lines exiting the same bottom-mounted eye strap in opposite directions. That is indeed similar to what I am planning. Your aft setup is really simple, and I assume effective. I intended to mount blocks in the system (maybe because I still think like a heavy-boom Nor'Sea guy), but it takes no effort to raise such a light boom to the reef cringles, so your tactic gets the nod. I do have a final question on your main halyard setup; did you mount a standup (spring-loaded) swivel block on the mast base, or on the cabin roof? It seems as if the former might be a bit too high (i.e., above the mast step) to get a good angle with the cam cleat, unless the cleat is mounted on a canted base . Thanks for all the good ideas. cleat on M17 mast

I wonder if anyone out there has replaced the main halyard cleat with a large jam cleat (or even a cam cleat) to facilitate the reefing process. I find it cumbersome to reach out from the cockpit with one hand and cleat the halyard off while trying to keep it taut. Am I missing something that might make a regular cleat the only choice? Larry, This looks like the cleats that I have, except that the athwartships hole centers are 1 1/2" instead of 1 3/8". The black anodizing has long since worn off. In fact, I had no idea they had been black at one time until I took a closer look to see if they matched your description. If you want a black one, looks like you can get it at rigrite, or I'll make you a good deal on one of mine, depending on which one matches your measurements. Larry Y

Is this the same cleat that was original equipment on the old M-17's? I replaced mine with Hereshoff design cleats a few years ago. The old ones are still with my spare boat supplies. I could probably be talked out of one. ;-) By the way, the Sept./ Oct. issue of Good Old Boat has an article on how to shine up old deck hardware and cleats. Storm Jib

M-17 folks? This spring we fitting our M-17 "Little Breeze" with a furling headsail that works really great with one exception....really stiff wind like 20 knots plus trying to punch to windward. On our previous sailboats (25 ft and 32ft) we would fly our storm jib but with the furling headsail on the Monty there is no forestay to hank to. What have other M-17 owners done....aside from using the iron spinaker which is what we did this summer on a couple of occasions.? Arnold Sharpe, M-17 #265, " Little Breeze"

Cockpit cushion choices

Seasons Greetings to all you Monty sailors! I have a question--or shall we say a survey--for all M15 owners. My '85 M15 is sans cockpit cushions, and I have been looking into options from the standpoint of both practicality and affordability. I would very much like to hear from those of you who have cockpit cushions as to what type you have, where you sourced them from, and cost. I have already made cardboard patterns, port and starboard, and was curious to find that they are not the exact same width--the starboard side is about 1" wider at the widest part. Are all the older M15 boats built that way or is is possible that we all have some variance during the mfg process? By type of cushion, what I mean is: choice of foam: open cell vs. closed cell choice of fabric: marine vinyl vs. a sunbrella-like acrylic fiber cover single cushion each side, or split cushion ( 1/3 - 2/3 or insert) for easier access to the storage lockers. I've so far received 3 opinions. One friend who sails a Gemini out of SF strongly suggested the Bottomsiders (closed cell 1.5") and says that they are wildly popular around his docks. But that same person said that if I go with custom made cushions from a marine canvas shop, consider Sunbrella. Another point of view I received is that although Sunbrella is a quality fabric and breathes (better in the hot summer sun), it will attract dirt more easily and will be much harder to keep clean vs. having a good grade of marine vinyl in a (light color so as not to absorb heat) which can be easily wiped clean and also wiped dry with a towel if it gets wet. I like the split cushion idea because I do use the starboard locker as an ice chest / lunchbox, but that means more snaps or velcro and maybe more chance for them to shift around? I have one of these Gale Sails for CornDog. The only time I've ever hoisted it was at the dock and I decided then that I wouldn't really want to be out on the foredeck rigging that when the conditions were bad enough to require it. Also, the smallest size they have is 30sq.ft., which is a little larger than would be ideal for a storm sail on a M17. I bought it second hand, in new condition, thinking I would use it in slightly more moderate conditions, but I doubt I ever will. My partial furled genoa has decent performance in those conditions, and is much easier to use.
