Ahoy Mateys In an attempt to research the legality of booze and boats I came across this in a "Facts About Boating and Alcohol" publication from the State of California at its http://www.dbw.ca.gov/pubs/ABC/ website: "While there is no "open container" law for boats, as there is for vehicles, it is just as illegal to operate a boat under the influence as it is to drive a car while under the influence." Since this is an official publication from the Great State of California I have ABSOLUTELY NO FAITH in its correctness. I suspect that there is some sort of "open container" law for California boaters but I have yet to find it. Jim

Havasu Poker Run Update - Need your Help!

OK you guys.....time to show your stuff. WHO OUT THERE IS "CONNECTED"? Help me find more sponsors to really make this event go off. I have some great ones already lined up that you'll be hearing about soon...but the more the merrier. We want sponsors to attend the event. What kind of sponsors? Well anything "Trailer Sailor related". For instance: Sailmaker, Rigging Person, any kind of boat product like West System stuff or whatever if it applies to our boats, Aftermarket products for trailer sailors...whatever. Have you recently purchased new sails?, new boat?, new accesories? Get on the horn with the guys you just spent your $$$$ with and tell them that they ought to come to this event. The hotel has the facilities right on the water to put on a full vendor/manufacturer show. I was thinking that this would still be a few years before we grew the event that big...but...it seems you guys are coming so let's get them coming too! The key to getting them here is having the connection. I have only dealt with so many of them, but between us all we've dealt with most of them! Make them aware of the event, of how it is growing like crazy, and that you think it would be A GREAT place for them to come display their products of services. We have boats and crews coming from Arizona, California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, even Texas and Wyoming! We are only a 2.5 hour drive from the airport in Las Vegas...that might even entice a few! Also, if you know of anyone that is trying to make the decision of what trailer sailor is right for them before they make a purchase...tell them to come on down also. They can fly into Vegas, spend a day, then drive the 2.5 hours to Havasu. They can even join in on the group hotel rates. In one place they will be able to see Catalinas, Capris, Montgomerys, Compacs, West Wight Potters, Sanibles, MacGregors, and who knows what else might show up...that's just a list of the already confirmed atendees! Where else will they be able to see them all, side by side, on the water, and talk to the folks that sail them....and hopefully some of the folks that build them! Now that's doing your homework before buying a boat! OK...So get to work....Let me know any ideas you have or contacts you may have made re: above. I'll follow up every lead you give me. We are pushing the 40 boat mark now! Woohoo...I'm excited!! Check out the website to see who's coming! Steve Callahan had an interesting idea for flotation. He suggested that one mount a fire-hose at the perimeter of the interior with an air canister mounted to inflate the hose if needed. The length and diameter of the hose calculated to carry enough air to float the boat in an emergency. sal In a message dated 10/21/2009 10:45:34 A.M. Why are we even discussing this? Just in theory, right?? Or maybe it is a slow period on a lot of the sailing forums. Someone wants to take a very good boat, and build in flotation. Taking up very good useful space on a fairly small boat (15 or 17). With the chance of damaging the boat in the process. Maybe it will absorb, maybe it won't. Maybe it will mildew, maybe it won't. Will it break down in 5, 10, 15 years into gooey, cruddy $#%&"<?. Will it burn even more than an empty boat? Just having it in there, even new, may devalue the boat for any potential resale with who knows what foam in it. Yes, I know, we will NEVER sell, but life happens. Yes, boats can sink. IF the skipper takes them into danger, or sails them recklessly. Boats can also be refloated, repaired, and reused again. Wear your PFD, every time you go out. Have at it. M15 Flotation Foam

Hi, For your cooler you might try 'Evercoat Professional Sealant Foam'. It is a Polyurethane Resin with a propellant in a pressurized 12 Oz can. It claims to be waterproof, closed cell, sandable and easy to cut and paint. It adheres to everything except Teflon, Polyethylene and Silicone. It has an insulation value of R 5. It used to be available at West Marine, I don't know if they still sell it. It is easy to remove by cutting and scraping. Good luck with your cooler! On the M 15, why not have a margin of safety? My first 15 had no flotation so I added it. My current M15 has flotation and I am leaving it in. I sail on San Francisco Bay and have and will cruise big lakes in the west as well as British Columbia. We had adequate storage for cruising in one week intervals. Bert Felton Zephyr, M 15,#365

As I recall from the last time this came up, expanding foam is not closed cell. Meaning it will absorb moisture, which would allow all sorts of undesirable things to grow inside. Also, it is a real mess when you want to remove it. You need closed cell foam. Thanks Neil, Actually, IdaSailor was one of or larger sponsors the last two years but it was not Peter that I was dealing with.
