I have had several positive responses to my suggestion of a Rendevous on Lake Texoma. If you look on the internet at a map of the lake, you will see that there is a group of islands near the center of the lake and a number of coves on the Oklahoma side. The islands have sandy beaches and wooded centers and there are several coves that are popular with cruisers and campers. There are no facilities on these islands so one would have to bring along what was needed. I think it would work to have a weekend overnighter from either GrandPappy Point marina or Eisenhower State park to the islands. Folks who would have to be back at work on Monday could go back on Sunday. Those of us who are retired and would like to stay a bit longer could cruise for a day or two more rafting up each evening in the Islands or one of the nice coves along the shore. I also have a 21 foot pontoon boat (yes, an UGH, powerboat) and have asked my Granddaughter and her husband if they would be interested in towing the pontoon up. We could use it to transport BBQ, provisions, canvas gazeebo, folding chairs and tabels for a big BBQ and potluck on an island beach. It would also be a way to transport a spouse who is "White knuckled" about sailing if there is a breeze. Camping is allowed on the beaches for those who can't fit on the Montys. One possibilty is that we might have to pick up litter to have a clean place to use so, the pontoon might have to be the trash barge going back. Mid to late October is a great time on Texoma. The water is still warm, the days are pleasant with cool nights and it is a dry time of the year. Most of the power boat peasants, jet skiers and other Yahoos will be home watching NFL games and the mosquitos will not be too bad. The water in the East end of the lake is clear and reasonably clean for those who might want to swim. It has been several years since I have been there so I would need to go up in advance and check out the area, select a route and find suitable overnighting places. Setting this up will be a lot of work and it would be nice to have someone to share the planning and logistics. Anyone interested? Ron I, like you have sailed many times on Texoma but it has now been about 20 years. There is a protected horseshoe cove on one of the islands with room for 15 to 20 boats. I think even us with fixed keels can get our pointy ends up on the dry sand. It is easily reached from Loe's Highport Marina and also an easy sail from Grandpappy's. There is also a protected from 3 sides cove near Grandpappy's that would do for a raftup. I suppose we could put up with the indignity of a stinkpot if it can haul out our garbage. I haven't ever beached on the Ok. side but I would lower myself to that level if you know of good places up there for a party. We are also retired and will be in Utah serving as camp hosts until at least Labor Day and will be home no later than Oct. 1 I hope. Rudder mounting questions

Hello all- As you know I am a new Monty 17 owner. I have a few questions (and many more to come about other items!) about the mounting of the rudder. I learned here that on my vintage Monty (1979) the ruder is attached with a SS rod (supposed to be tapered at bottom end). It is designed to "stop" at bottom end so as not to slide out (lower gudgeon is smaller). A cotter pin is then used just below bottom gudgeon (through rod) to prevent rod from sliding upwards. Dilemma: My rods ( I received 2 when I purchased) are not tapered and my rudder and transom gudgeons all have the same diameter rod hole. My rods have 2 cotter pin holes (with 1/8" of each other) at one end. I am trying to slide rod down through gudgeons and attach 2 cotter rings at bottom transom gudgeon (one above and one below). However, once attached, rudder will not slide up and down on rod. It turns smoothly but will not slide up/down unless I force it up while turning it back and forth. I am placing top rudder gudgeon above top transom gudgeon. Is this correct? I am thinking that the rudder gudgeons may not be perfectly aligned (wood expanded/contracted) and this is the cause. The rod slides through transom gudgeons without much friction. When rudder is sliding correctly and is all the way up the rod, does it clear most ramps for launching/retrieving? Any thoughts on this arrangement? Am I installing correctly? Am I missing something? Thanks, Carlos

M-17 FURLING HEADSAIL

Fellow sailors, I am considering a furling headsail system for my M-17 "Little Breeze". I was looking at the "Harken" small boat setups but one thing is not quite clear to me will I need to replace my existing jib or find someway to seize it to the forestay? Additionally, I enjoy flying my 180 Drifter in light winds, will this system make that impossible unless I install dual forestays. Any help would be appreciated. When I bought the boat it came with a spinaker which I have never used and never will, any idea how much I should ask for it on Craigslist? Regards...Arnold Sharpe...M-17 #265..."LITTLE BREEZE"

Hi Arnold, In installed a CDI furler on my M-17 this spring since I sail mostly single-handed and was attracted by being able to control the headsail size in varying winds without leaving the cockpit. Since with a furler a single sail stays on the boat most of the time, I gave considerable thought to the sail size which would cover a wide range of conditions. It seemed like a large genoa, such as a 150% or bigger would have to be reefed a too much of the time sailing under normal conditions, and I thought it might lose too much shape when reefed down to working jib (100% - 110%) size. Since you would have to use a heavier sail cloth to cover the range of wind conditions, when unfurled as a drifter, you would not have the lightness such sails usually have. I chose a 135% genoa with luff foam made by Elliot Pattison, and this has worked fine for me. Most of the time I sail it unreefed, and when reefed it down to the 110% range (about two or three turns), it retains good shape and still sails well to windward. I have reefed it down smaller (maybe 80%), and it still sails fine. Luff tension is not a problem since the luff tape and plastic foil provide adequate stiffness. I use a backstay tensioner to control the headsail luff shape. The CDI unit is not too hard to install, simple to operate, and seems to be bulletproof in operation. It's so easy to work that you can react quickly to changing wind conditions. Having used it now for several months, I wouldn't be without it. Hello all, The Harken small boat furling system Part# 436 Cruising Furler Kit (207 +208) consist of the lower furling drum (208) and the top swivel (207) and is designed to be used with wire luff or zipper luff headsails. It does not use the headstay foil. The even smaller drum (165) and swivel (164) can be used as well. They are commonly used on the Martin 242, a 24ft one design racing sailboat common to Southern Cal. The Martin 242 carries a 110% Zipper luff jib. This set up is also common to the Melges 24, Nacra catamarans, as well as the 505 open. When you get to the larger Harken furlers Mk series 00, 0, , 1 and up, they are designed for use with a foil as previously mentioned. the smallest of the Mk series is designed for boats 30/35ft in length. The smaller Harken systems aren't really designed to to be used as a reefing system for the headsail, they are used to either deploy fully or furl completely, so the kit name is a bit deceiving, it is better suited to racing sailboats. I think the CDI is designed to reduce sail incrementally (reef). Thats were the luff pad becomes useful in maintaining a nice headsail shape as sail is reduced. maybe some folks out there using the CDI system could comment. My boat is set up with the 436 Kit, But I also installed an internal halyard exit block centered directly in line with the the headstay for a dedicated internal jib halyard. The two remaining sheaves at the mast head now due duty as port and starboard spin halyards. It has the advantage of being able to tension the luff. We argue amongst ourselves, but the general conscience among those I sail with is the furling headsails on an M17's are useful from around 90% to about 155%. (we argue over the 90% value!) One thing that caught my attention regarding the Harken system is the system is not meant to be trailered fully assembled. The literature at the time (~ 2 years ago) said the furling drum needed to be removed for trailering. It is a very nice systems and similarly priced to the CDI. I went with the CDI and have been very happy with it; turns out the luff tension was not as big of an issue as I supposed, as the luff is very stiff due to the boltrope and padding. I would say the Harken and CDI are the two most popular furling systems for small boats.
