I remembered this topic coming up a year or two ago, so I checked through my "Boat Work" archives and found this excellent post from Sean. Larry >I was just thumbing through Don Casey's " Sailboat Refinishing" and looked at his chapter on painting masts. He suggests using a polyurethane (2 part) and putting it on with a roll and tip method, however he says if thinned correctly you may not even have to bother with the tip part. He suggests sanding the mast first and then an acid type etching primer that's recommended for the particular paint. He also warns about "clear coating" saying that usually by the end of one season the clear coat will usually be like pieces of cellophane all over the deck. (I refer to Don's books , especially "This Old Boat", regularly. They are awesome) Although I have not yet painted a mast, I have used Interlux's two part polyurethane on some fiberglass projects using the "roll and tip" method and got results that I was very happy with. It's more expensive than 1 part but the durability of it far exceeds the 1 part. If you decide to go that route you can get the Interlux products at West Marine as well as a really nice free painting guide from Interlux that goes through the prep steps. And thanks Howard for the tip on the mixing cups! I'll give it a try for sure. That's one of the things that's so great about being a part of a group like this. Sailor's Tailor covers

Just a note to chime in and say good things about the Sailor's Tailor. I have had two of their covers and would not hesitate to buy another. Well made, very durable, great fit, and well thought out features on the two I have owned for my Flying Scot. I don't really know how old the first one was when I retired it (it came with the boat when I bought it), but it went through 10+ years outdoors in the PNW with no problems. The shock cord was shot and I didn't think the stitching would hold up to a cross-country trip, so I replaced it. Twelve years later it's great. So I'm interested in one for my M-17. Capt James, I would not recommend powder coating a mast. Why pray tell do I express myself in a negative way to this fine finish procedure? Because the piece is put in an oven at approx.425 degrees F. to cure the coating - (plastic). This is probably not good for the temper that was put into the extrusion for its strength. Might be wrong - but I would pass on the process for a spar on the boat - I have had mooring cleats and spacers, brackets powder coated, if you have a casting coated it takes a different type of coating (porosity and off gassing issues), I am told by the coaters (industrial areo company) NOT to use the material at or below the waterline - I was going to have my alum. rudder cheeks powder coated on my S2 and they advised against- maybe new materials nowadays - check with a reputable company - or three. Unfortunately not good for refurbished centerboard plates - darn! Pros - My mooring cleats are gorgeous - you do know what the four hole open base merriman cleat sells for today right? The alum. spacers for my nav lights are equally cute, and all in a long lasting coating - I am going for something goofy colorwise on the next run. Cons: It is not Bomb proof - tough but not impervious. Make sure you or the coaters mask threads on parts - also note the material is of substantial thickness compared to paint or anodizing and tolerances may be affected. Gary O. Reference Ed's and Gary's notes on M17s in the 1/3/08 postings, I had some fine sailing away back when. Here is my personal experience that I posted last August, and it is from my journal, not from my fading and likely boasting memory. My first M15 "Joy" #264 was, like Jerry's, well-ballasted. She had two 27 group deep cycle batteries in the bilge to power the Minn-Kota trolling motor that I mounted through the bilge, just aft of the keel. In mid-November of 1989--I was a very young 60 way back then--I trailed to Stockton Lake in Southwest Missouri, a Corps of Engineers impoundment noted for very low surrounding hills and plenty of wind. My wind speed and boat speed were as read from the Dwyer hand-held wind meter, and a hand- held Knotstick. Not electronic and high tech, but neither were the patent logs of the old Master Mariners. With a reefed main and full jib, I sailed out of my anchorage, and "Dwyer said winds were rarely below 20 miles per hour, usually 20 to 30 plus, with gusts to over 40! Knotstick reads 5 1/4 knots at times when on a close to beam reach." "Joy's changed heavy weather capability, with the second battery in the bilge, is remarkable. Now I'd say she is good for fifteen to twenty miles per hour, unreefed, thirty to thirty five with both main and jib reefed." Now that I am a hundred years older, my "Rejoyce!" M15 #361 may never see such fine sailing, but she loves to sail. And yes, experience helps, too, as well as a lot of ballast. I have been sailing for over 65 years, first with my "Snipe," and then a procession of sailboats from a Sun Fish, 13' canoe with a sail designed for an 18 footer, Philippine dugout canoe ("Banca"), Pearson Triton, so many others, and aboard a 103' three stick schooner in winds over 70 knots bucking a strong current, with waves over 50', in Australia's Tasman Sea, complete with a couple knock downs and a pooping while I was at the helm. Much fun! Yes, our wonderful little M15 can take a lot, if you are prepared, properly rigged, and have some previous experience in heavy weather.
