Thanks Tom, .For offering to help launch #644. But I think Bob will be working into the first half of May finishing up on the details. Once she's delivered, Svendsen's Boat Works in Alameda gets to play with it for another week or two (epoxy bottom paint, fabricating stern pulpit, etc). I estimate a June 1st launch date.which will be exactly 5 months from the time we placed our factory order with Bob. "Strictly Sail" in-water boat show ends this weekend in Oakland.I'm debating if it's worth fighting the crowd, but since my wife is out of town (F.A. for UAL), now's my chance to order more stuff...and apologize later! My slip is located in the middle of SF Bay on Treasure Island.an area of the bay commonly known as "The Slot." A calm day here is when winds are blowing less than 20 kts. In spring and summer months, cold afternoon winds of 30+ kts direct from the Golden Gate are the norm. Armed with foul-weather gear, two reefs and outfitted with a terribly expen$ive dodger, the M17 should sail most comfortably in this part of the bay. But as Bob (M15 #208) mentioned, there are many pleasant (calm and temperate) fringe areas of the bay to sail and moor; All easily accessible. I have not officially named M17 #644 (I'd like to see her first), but I am leaning on "Pony Engine." Cheers, Scott Simpson

Ahoy there! My name is Scott Simpson. Considering this is my first posting to the group, I'd like to briefly introduce myself. With nearly 35 years of messing around in boats-from sabots to Ranger 33's-I've come to the conclusion that bigger is not necessarily better or more fun. For me, it seemed the bigger the boat I sailed, the more distant the feel of the wind and waves became. I'm sure sailing with the "power steering" of a wheel denied me of that small boat feel. I longed for those earlier days of simply sailing with a tiller. After reading all the positive postings of the Montgomery, you guys sold me on it. Because I don't plan to trailer the boat and will be sailing the San Francisco Bay, I decided to go with the larger M17 rather than the cute-as-a-bug M15. I also chose to have Bob build a new one rather than purchase used (yes, I know a few of you might think a used M17 in the hand is worth two in the mold). The main reason for buying new is that I wanted a few modest changes made to the standard model.and I knew Bob would be the most familiar and capable person to handle those tasks. Also, I'd like to think that my wife, Silvia, and I will be sailing this Montgomery for at least a couple of decades (I'm 47 & Silvia is perpetually 29). With ants in our pants, we look forward to that eventual delivery date. Thanks to those who responded with your kind words. Flying is my profession, but sailing has always been my passion. Jeff (M17 # 336), to answer your question regarding modifications/options. Initially, they are mainly cosmetic rather than structural. Specifically, Bob has agreed to include the following options for a reasonable charge: 1. contrasting light grey non-skid molded in 2. painted red boot stripe (waterline) 3. sunlight prism integrated in forward deck 4. electrical AC/DC system: interior lighting (4 directional), exterior lighting, charger, external plug 5. Idasailor "C" model swing-up rudder (The "C" model is 8 lbs heavier, dimensionally larger, and stronger as compared to Idasailor's standard M17 model. Since this is also the replacement rudder for the C22, I'm guessing the "C" stands for Catalina.) 6. teak hatch boards (as opposed to standard marine plywood) 7. manual bilge pump (actuated from cockpit) 8. positive flotation Because I have no plans to trailer this vessel, a fixed-keel option would have been very desirable to me (as was offered in earlier M17s). From a builder's perspective though, Bob chose to curb my enthusiasm towards this idea. Maybe I should have requested an extra 100lbs of lead shot. Post-factory options: 1. headsail roller furling 2. 4 coats bottom epoxy / 2 coats anti-foul paint 3. Sunbrella / s.s. dodger (form + function = $$!) 4. misc. items (outboard with alternator, integrated GPS / depth, wind instrumentation) Although a few of these items are rather pricey (I'm taking the "5th" regarding the dodger), I firmly believe a reasonably equipped M17 (& M15) offers the most bang for the buck. I would be happy to share photos and more information directly, if anyone is interested once all is complete. Hi Hugh, The M15 is a very ruggedly built and well thought out boat. You have a lovely comfortable double berth in the forward end of the cabin. Of course, in a 15 footer, you won't find sitting headroom, but if you sail alone, then remove the PortaPotti, put a cushion on the floor and you have good seating. You'll want a tiller extension - I made one and then modified it when I made a second one. This extension fitted over the tiller itself (hollowed out on the underside for a good fit) and was held in place with Velcro strips. This way you can sit all the way forward in the cockpit (and keep the transom out of the water), which is how I like to sail. >From another M15 owner in Florida I got the design of his 19" toolbox galley and built one. It contained everything you needed for cruising: knives, forks and spoons; a small water kettle, pot and pan; salad bowl; wine glasses; cutting board; etc. For a stove I used a propane one burner restaurant stove - all self contained. Cost about $25 when I found it. Cooking was done in the cockpit, using the filler piece above the PortaPotti as a work area at the back of the cockpit. I also had a Bimini, as well as a tarp that could cover the cockpit if it rained. One thing I would recommend is that you put latches on the sail locker lids to keep them closed in the event of a knockdown, and when you leave the boat at a marina you can lock the latches with small padlocks (I had three locks all keyed the same - sail locker locks and the companionway lock). The beauty of an M15 is that costs are almost $0.0, while the fun factor is maximum. You can't beat that! It goes to windward at 70 MPH on an Interstate, which gets you to good new cruising areas in a few hours driving time. Try doing that with your big boats... Connie

Ha Ha! Hey, we now have 4 of the old model M23's signed up for the cruise! You don't see that everyday! I'll be watching the whole week for that perfect shot of them lined up and sailing together. Anybody else out there who wants to join us, it's not too late. Send me a line. (Jerry?) (Now wouldn't that be cool!) We launch on June 2nd in Anacortes and will spend a week cruising the islands. Some may even be staying a second week. If you can't make it for the week, join us for the opening weekend and see all the Montgomeries. Larry

OK Jerry! I sure hope you'll be sailing somewhere nearby to come get me out of the drink when we broach! Actually, Jo's a pretty darn good sport and always volunteers to go forward and jibe the pole (I think she's afraid of being blamed for the broach!) I think the cut-off for the Challenge is 25 ft. Hi Maylon, Welcome to our group. I am sure you will enjoy your M-15. On my 15 and the few others I have seen in person, the side shrouds and forestay are secured with adjusters rather than turnbuckles. The adjusters simply have several holes in them rather than using some sort of a threaded rod. The bottom end of the adjuster is pinned to the deck fitting, and the eye of the shroud is pinned to one of the series of holes. I think the pin size is 3/16, but I am do not have one in front of me to verify that. If you look for adjusters at your favorite marine store, in a catalog or on-line you will find what you need. They sell expensive adjusters for racers and less expensive models for people like me. The original rigging instructions for your boat were posted by Giles at: http://msog.org/models/m15/m15_setuprig.cfm Those instructions work well for those of us with other 15s! You probably want to start with all three adjusters pinned so that they are as long as possible and then adjust the side stays. If you have the boat in your driveway this is a good place to get your initial adjustments.
