Working Jib

Hi, I just replaced my original working jib with one made by Ullman sails. It came in with a deeper foot but not nearly as much material along the leach line. I have been told that if I install jib tracks on the cabin deck that I will have more power and more control over using my old system of using the aluminum toe rails with pulleys. I am trying to decide whether to have a larger sail cut or to install the tracks, pullys, cleats. I would welcome suggestions. What is the size of the original working jib? Stripped wood screw holes

A quick and easy method that I've used with success is to fill the stripped hole with slivers of wood and a little wood glue (waterproof in this case) and then just replace the screw. Make sure to trim the slivers flush and if the screw doesn't grip add more slivers. Waxing the screw is probably also a good idea in the method. Rick Langer M15 #337 Bluebird

Jerry, Greetings! I have a spiffy new mast,new mast step fitted to boat and am finishing my boom as I write - my question is this - the toggles at the masthead are 3/8" pins(!) If my memory serves me I do not think there is a terminal that makes that size transition (?) wire to pin I mean. I cannot locate a toggle that makes that transition either - HELP! I will be stepping the mast in the about 2 weeks from now as I am headed off to NY for some R&R and a little sailing on the Great South Bay and fishing at Connetquot River. My father-in-law was kind enough to get himself an Alerion 28 so I can help him sail it once a year - really nice guy he is. LOL As soon as I measure the shrouds/stays I will send you the dimensions and specs (t-bolt terminals at shrouds) Hope this finds all well with you and yours. Thanks for your help. Not knowing any better, I assume that all fittings done correctly work well. However, in regard to swaged terminals, one might read Don Casey's (This Old Boat) opinion and his experience concerning swaged terminals. He cites several reasons for their failure. He recommends Cone terminals. He did not mention Nicopress firttings. I have only one swaged terminal (open turnbuckle) required for a CDI furler. Jerry M built the forestay for me and I have complete confidence in his workmanship. My 1975 M-17 came with Nicopress fittings. Although the boat has never been in salt water, at least since 1980 and I replaced some of the standing rigging a few years ago, all rigging and fittings were in excellent shape. I bisected the Nicopress fittings and wire rope, examined them with a 10X loupe and could detect no corrosion or other degradation whatever. Frankly, I replaced all fittings with Nicopress sleeves and thimbles because I did not know any better. Perhaps if I knew then about cone terminals, I would have used them, although they somewhat pricey and require some skill and care in attachment. Admitted, compared to swaged and cone fittings, Nicopress fittings are as ugly as a mud fence. But they are simple, completely visible, easy to install (with a good crimper) and work just fine--so far. I still have a lot to learn about sailboats. Bill K M-17 # 55 Half Monty

When restoring old clocks I have drilled out the screw hole and filled it in with a dowel epoxed in. Then redrilled for the screw. If done nicely it hardly shows on the back of a clock. Dale Nummi M-17

Hi Howard, My $0.02 worth......... There are two things to consider: the quality of the fitting and the quality of the S/S wire. If both are good quality, and the swage is done properly, it should be almost indestructible. On our Tripp-Lentsch 29, I had all swaged fittings on the rigging and on the railings (doubles), and in 26 years the only failure I had was with the section of railing that was about 4 feet long and had a pelican hook as an opening gate. The railing wire was covered with a plastic cover, and one day in spring I noticed a discoloration at the swage fitting. Closer inspection and some flexing of the wire showed that I had an incipient failure on my hands. The wire had rusted (S/S rusting?) under the plastic coating. The rigging itself; fore stay; back stay; two lower shrouds on each side; and an upper shroud on each side; all bare S/S wire operated flawlessly for the 26 years we owned the boat, and we experienced some serious weather conditions. Of course, I examined each swaged fitting with a loupe, looking for cracks at the beginning of each season, but never found one. So wire quality is important too. LEPPO's rigging was closely inspected each spring, prior to our first sail, and always was in excellent shape. Things you should be looking for are signs of rust showing between the wire strands at the swages. If you find any, then I'd seriously consider getting new rigging. Any broken wire strands (fish hooks) are also cause for concern. You see one. How many more that you can't see might be broken? Connie

Anyone for Anacapa again??

Anyone interested in making a trip from Channel Islands Harbour out to Anacapa? We are doing the trip again! Date will be Sat Aug 26th. We will be accompnaying the Socal Potters group for the daysail. Norm Bundeck is going to go along aboard Dauntless with Mari Jo and I. It would be great to see some other Monty's out there. The trip is about 12-13 miles each way. We may set the hook at Frenchy's cove weather permitting and get a bite to eat onboard but probably will not land on the island. If the weather doesn't favor the trip out to Anacapa, the thought is that we might sail up the coast about 6 or 7 miles to Ventura and pop in there for lunch. Jo and I will be arriving in Oxnard (Channel Islands Marina) on Friday the 25th and staying until Monday the 27th. Love to meet and see some other Montys. Last time I was there with Jason and Norm in 17 and a 15 we had a blast. Great launching facilities, gated guest docks, clean restroom and showers and super easy paking right near the boat for both truck and trailer. The Harbour Patrol folks were very accomodating. 23 days and counting!!! Come sail with us.

NOISY WIRES IN THE MAST

I know of two good ways to quiet noisy mast wires. 1. If the wires are already in the mast, you can pick up some foam plumbing pipe insulation (usually about four feet long and hollow in the middle -- very light) and slide it up the wires into the mast. It will probably catch on the ends of screws and such, but a little wiggling should get several four foot sections of the stuff up the mast. 2. If you are installing the wires, you can attach nylon ties to the wires and leave the end of the tie sticking out -- don't trim them off. Put a tie every eight to 12 inches so that the untrimmed ends of the ties stick out in a radial pattern inside the mast. The ties will prevent the wires from slapping inside the mast. --------------------------------- Groups are talking. We´re listening. Check out the handy changes to Yahoo! Groups.
