Rachel, I am so glad that you mentioned this, as I have had oil leaking from my Honda after transporting it inside my tow vehicle and I was certain that it was "right side up". I now suspect that when I was jostling it about some oil was shaken out. I will be a little more careful in the future. steve Steve R. Wet deck core can be fixed, but it's a pain (ask me how I know...). On the off chance that the present owner doesn't want you drilling numerous test holes in the deck ;-), you can get a pretty good idea by looking inside at the areas where the various deck hardware items are attached (bow pulpit, jib tracks, traveller, etc.) If you see rusted bolts, orange staining, or any other signs of water having leaked through in those areas, it might be prudent to remove some hardware and check the condition of the deck core. You can also "sound" the deck with something like a plastic mallet, or a screwdriver handle. A nice "ring" sound is good; a dull thump can indicate moisture. On my 1981 (which I had surveyed by a professional since I was halfway across the country - a lot of good THAT did), the rust was there, and after I got the boat home I ended up with a bit of a re-core project (quite a bit of the bow under the pulpit, large areas under the jib tracks, the area under the mast step - which was crushed, not wet - and some places under the traveler bolts. 2) Transom. On an older-style M-17 (pre-1981), I would check over the transom-to-hull area. On that style M-17 the top of the transom does not have the (stronger) out-turned "lip" at the top edge of the transom, and on several I looked at I found cracking on the transom about a half inch in from the edges where they joined the topsides (sides of the hull above the waterline). In other words, where the hull planking would join the transom planking if it were a wooden boat. Tim, If the motor has been sitting for a few years I would have it serviced by Yamaha dealer.At the very least it needs a new water pump impeller as the blades take a set and do not work very efficiently causing the motor to get hot. If it was stored with fuel in it,not only the carb gums up but other parts as well. There are many reasons why it would cut out, maybe parts of the electrical system are corroded.I think it is shop time or shop manual from Yamaha. You don't want to be drifting towards a bridge or dock and have problems.Sometimes it's cheaper to have the pros look at it rather than just throwing parts at it and hoping. The deckmold was changed in the very early 80s (81?). Thereafter, the transom was solid and a motor mount was the method of attachment. Why not take the motor to a professional mechanic? Hi Bob, Another thought: Also get yourself the WEST Epoxy book on fiberglass repairs. As I recall it's free, or only at nominal cost today. They give you all the details of fixing dings, dents, crazed gelcoat (of course with the use of their WEST products). An invaluable book as a reference, and a "How To" book. It was my "bible" for years. When you start, remove any external hardware that keeps you from working on a clean surface: I'm thinking of things like oar lock sockets, rudder gudgeons; outboard brackets; or towing eye at the bow. With items like that removed, you aren't trying to work around the hardware. It makes the work a lot simpler and easier. Connie

Todd, So sorry to hear about Bilbo. As others on here have said, a relationship with man's best friend can only be appreciated by those that have experienced it. Having lost both of my pups in the last year I can relate to the sorrow and empty spot that is left when they pass on. Hang in there. I have found that, over time, more and more of my thoughts of them are of all the great times I had with them and the joy that they brought to Mari Jo's and my lives. Sean

Guys and gals, Four stroke motors have crankcases that are reservoirs for the lubricating oil. (no oil in fuel for lubrication like a 2 stroke) Hondas and possibly others are finicky about the motor orientation due to the oil possibly draining to 'non-reservoir' areas of the motor i.e. upper valve train, intake and exhaust. The best advice would seem to be to check the motor and documentation for instructions on storage and transportation to keep the UP side UP and vice versa. I know for the guys out there -- it might be time to ...............read the instructions. We all have to at some time or another. Hi Tim, I just checked my sticker on my 2001 Yamaha 4hp 4 stroke. It says that you can damage the engine from leaking oil if the engine is not transported in an upright position or in a horizontal position with the handle on the bottom. This could be one reason it was leaking oil. just a thought. al williams

It sure is quiet in the house tonight. His last sail was July 8th. Probably the best ones, from his perspective, were the trips to Georgian Bay and the North Channel, where he got to get out and do a lot of running around and swimming.
